Sometimes you take players on what they can develop into, not their recent stats. McLean has shown he like most talls it takes time for them to reach their potential and he still has lots of room for improvement.
Good point...
We were into Draper before landing Ryder. He hadn't even played a senior game.
Looks like our interest and offer was justified based on this season for Essendon.
Apparently, Heath finished the season playing school football and completely dominated in the ruck and went forward with the same results.
No real development, just running through witches hats, as the say..

Someone said he looks like and plays like a young Carl Ditterich. If he is half as good, we have found one.

Does that also mean Heath will end up at Melbourne.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Draper was clearly a ruckman (with potential)
McLean is not a ruckman or a KP forward
He is an undersized part time ruckman and a back up tall forward
He is like an all rounder that is handy at both but not good enough at either
Mitchell Marsh
McClean is 21, still could be anything. Was best first year player at Sandy and got drafted by the swans in a year when you thought he didn't show anything.
Leigh Brown, Zayne Cordy, Jordan Roughead, all say high with there premiership medallions. What where they great at? Plenty of other premiership players who were all rounders.

Hope he does not toss the ball UP in the air like Ditterich while kicking for goal.
The crowd would go wild when Ditterich marked within range.
I would groan and then watch the ball go out off bounds on the full.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

But it’s hard to know with ruckman, they take a while to develop and may never?! Or they could end up worth the wait?!
McLean is undersized IMO and to be 197 you need to be athletically gifted.
I think he is more Shaun McKernan than P.Ryder
Heath replaces Alabakis as the project ruck. McLean replaces Mckernan as a backup forward who can pinch hit a little in the ruck - but he is not a ruck all day option like Marshall or Ryder. Still need to find another ruck to replace Hunter I think.

He actually raised the two flags 199 times, so not too many groans there.
The club was on the right track when they tried to snag Draper from the Bombers before he even played a game. Would love them to take a punt on someone who just needs a bit of opportunity.

The problem with your recruiting views is you basically don't like the idea of recruiting anyone who isn't a brownlow medallist and comes cheaply.
Even in that circumstance I'm confident you'd be concerned there is something we dont know about causing them to be available.
At the end of the day, recruiting is about spotting value, if we can get a 21 year old who is rated by their current club to come to ours due to better opportunities or a longer term deal and it costs us a third or fourth round draft pick what's the problem?
Best case he makes it, worst he ties up a spot we'd fill with short term depth ala mckernan. They're not choosing between him and a young kid in the first couple rounds of the draft.
