Hayden McLean?
Heraldsun article says swans may lose Mclean to the saints.
https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ ... b7b63424bf
"The Swans, who have a bursting salary cap, are yet to re-sign Luke Parker and could also lose emerging tall Hayden McLean to St Kilda."
Just a tidbit I read for everyone

Re: Hayden McLean?
I wonder if the List people at the Saints really do rate McLean or if it's just pre-trade speculation, there are plenty of speculators around as opposed to ITK's
If the Saints do rate McLean they must see a role for him, the role that McKernan couldn't fulfil.
He's inconsistent but has played some good footy, anyway, we'll know in 5 or 6 weeks.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Geez he sounds very rateable by people who actually know what they are talking about when it comes to AFL footballers.

Re: Hayden McLean?
He'd be a fantastic pick up IMO and I'd be stoked if we could get it done. There is a lot of RoMA in how he goes about his game - great hands, good kick for goal, and he likes to get phsyical and involved around the contest. He hasn't been able to cement a spot in Sydney's line up due to more established players ahead of him in his position - not too dissimilar to Membrey's plight...

Re: Hayden McLean?
He had 89% game time in his 11 games this year ... so was given every chance.
We can't compare with Membrey.

Am I wrong in believing both Parker & McLean to St Kilda or is it just referencing McLean?

Re: Hayden McLean?
I rate any good player.
What is McLean?
A big forward with low production
Or
A small ruckman with low production
At 197cm 100kg he’s a similar size to Bruce but not half the ability as a forward?!
Let’s look at his output
8 Disposal pg
0.8 goals pg
3.5 marks pg
4 hit outs pg
2.5 tackles pg
What part of that suggests great pick up?!
Saw him play at Sandy, not that impressed
Hopefully Heath goes ok

Re: Hayden McLean?
Let's be fair, he's improving every year on all his stats.
Plus his best game, that happened this year, was very good. 18 disposals, 10 marks (6 contested), 4 goals & 11 hitouts.
All very good & very promising for a big man who's only played 21 games.
2019 - 4 games
2020 - 6 games
2021 - 11 games
Certainly better than Hunter & would allow Heath the freedom to develop in time.

Better forward than Hunter
Not a better ruckman - and Hunter is poor
What position do you see McLean playing
What salary
What in terms of a trade?

Re: Hayden McLean?
In time I see him as our 2nd tall forward, helping RoMa in the ruck, certainly after Paddy retires and before Heath develops to AFL ready.
Who knows on salary. More than he's on now to help squeeze Sydney's salary cap. $300K over 4 years???
What's the going rate for an improving 21 game big man who's 21 years old?

Re: Hayden McLean?
Not much!
The ‘best game’ stats you mentioned
We’re they all in one game or are they his highs in each category
We take him
He’ll be on the list 2 or 3 years
Play 10-15 games
And be a big part player, playing mainly VFL IMO

I'm no expert but I like the look of those parallels.
Clearly, there is a bit of work to do in the ruck but I guess that's what we thought of Ro back then, but his forward craft appears to be well on track with Marshall's and due to the Swans set up, he is ahead of Ro as a ruck at that age..
He's backed up Hickey so far and I doubt went to a lot of centre bounces, and his lighter frame may not have helped at throw ins. Sound familiar? Ro Ro is a beast now.
But, considering Hickey is no hack and has had an outstanding year, its hard to say if McLean has been exposed to enough real ruck work at all.
Next to Buddy (or King maybe) he has shown more when he has played deep, that would be nice for a King who is about to get moving and a forward structure which has developed around deep entry into the goal face.
Marshall fell into a ruck opportunity and well, the rest is history.
Do the guys who picked Marshall, Wilkie, Highmore and our newest 2nd chance sensation, Cooper Sharman see something. The recruiters have a bit of form there.
I think we could have had Maclean earlier but we already Marshall, took King and obviously had Paddy in our sights.
McLean looks a genuine mobile, tall forward, 2nd ruck with 2 years of class development behind him.
Groom him now while we have Paddy and Heath at either ends of a career and Marshall to steady the ship on Paddy transition to retirement.

Re: Hayden McLean?
You were right B.M., best in each category for the season. My mistake.
I still like the way he's improving though, two very good games this year against Geelong & Collingwood. His stats are as good as or better than Bruce's at the same stage of their careers and IMO a much better partner for RoMa and fit for St Kilda than Hunter.

I was acknowledging B.M., he rightfully questioned my "best game" stats.

Arguments relying on historical average stats means you are always stuck in the past and shows that you don't have a great grasp of the game. Players develop . Mclean won Sandy's best first year player and was picked up by Sydney, looks like the pros see something you don't. You through in Bruce - show us his stats in his first three years and how they compare to Mcleans? Ridiculous to compare a seasoned player to a 21 year old.
Given your track record I will take your non rating of Mclean as a sign that the Saints should pick him up. 3 years, for a third round pick for someone who is not expected to be a star but shows ability to play forward/back and pinch hit in the ruck. Make it happen Saints!

Re: Hayden McLean?
Sometimes you take players on what they can develop into, not their recent stats. McLean has shown he like most talls it takes time for them to reach their potential and he still has lots of room for improvement. Not many talls have an immediate impact like the the King boys.
I think we all need to remember that kids take time, look at the NRL & ARU, they run under 21 feeder competitions not under 18/19.
