Rozee was rated as high if not higher than King.

Re: Petracca
Max King was the best pick IMO
Most would agree
He was touted to go at number 1, was a steal at 4 will end up the best player from that draft - we got lucky due to his injury!!!
C.Judd went at 3 due to injury
J.Selwood went at 7 due to injury
A lot of other players have been injury sliders in their draft year.
You draft a player for 10-15 years not the first 4 years
Players get over injuries.
Personally I would have taken King at 1, Walsh at 2, Rozee at 3, B.King at 4, Lukoscious 5 and Rankin at 6
202cm freak athletes with ability are rare
Not so much 193cm 100kg key forwards who can take a mark.

Re: Petracca
If I can remember correctly the doggies just paid out a million bucks to recruit a full forward from GWS. We believed that we didn't have that sort of cash and McCartin was a good, and cheap, option.CURLY wrote: ↑Tue 31 Aug 2021 5:24pmMcCartin was full forward in the same AA team.samoht wrote: ↑Tue 31 Aug 2021 5:04pm Petracca's achievements as a junior included winning the Larke Medal, the most valuable player at state level, and selection in the All-Australian and TAC Cup Team of the Year sides.
McCartin, as a key forward, wasn't kicking more goals (than Petracca), and McCartin was also a diabetic.
Why take risks with your no. 1 pick?
Freddy the blind pig would have recruited Petracca way ahead of McCartin. There was a big "pick me" neon sign flashing over Petracca that Eshaug couldn't see or completely ignored.
Elshaug had to make the case for McCartin, manufacture it ... he knew better than anyone else.
Splitting packs was more important to Elshaug than kicking goals.
Worst recruiting decision of all time.
I wanted Petracca but quickly accepted the saints pick.
As the saying goes, no use crying over spilt milk.

Re: Petracca
LOL - comparing these two - I would rather Paddy [2015 - 2019]
- Tom Boyd - 52 Games - 42 Goals
- Paddy McCartin - 35 Games - 34 Goals
Paddy had issues - but for a Million Dollar Player .8 of a goal a game just is not good enough (1 goal per game is bad enough)

Boyd was expensive SD but the Doggies ended up with a premiership - arguably Boyd's best game for them. The Dog's faithful probably would take that after 50 odd years of waiting.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Wed 01 Sep 2021 12:23pmLOL - comparing these two - I would rather Paddy [2015 - 2019]

Statistically in most categories Max was better, unfortunately in the most important for big forward he wasn't...goals.
But, the end of the season revealed a glimpse of what may be and we could see Max surge beyond any of our expectations.

Career Games:
Ben - 53 Games
Max - 38 Games
At this stage - 15 games is a hell of a lot - and in his last 9 games - 23 goals at 2.33 per game
Max is one season behind Ben or almost 30% games

Re: Petracca
Ben has not dominated a game like Max did at the end of the season
At times he looked unstoppable
Ben has been good, a Ben Brown type hit up forward
Max is a contested marking machine
Contested marks i50 are the most valuable stats in footy

I’m sure the Melbourne forum this year is all about Watts, Scully , Trengove. Richmond would have spent the last few years talking about Fiora, Tambling.

Fancy taking Tambling over Franklin, classic draft blooper of all time, it was decisions like that that started the demise of Wallet's career. The Barometer wrote: ↑Fri 03 Sep 2021 7:51pmI’m sure the Melbourne forum this year is all about Watts, Scully , Trengove. The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Petracca
That’s a hindsight call
I saw Tambling as a junior playing for NT
The hype around him was massive, and he delivered. Looked every bit the future star. Andrew McLeod was the comparison being made.
For whatever reason he never developed.
But he was always rated in the top few as a junior.
Franklin was a freak athlete, but was very inconsistent
His contested marking was very average for a 196.
However, he still should have gone at 2
Delidio was the clear cut #1

Re: Petracca
Not really
This thread is the opposite IMO and the reason is that it was a contentious decision and that it wasn’t hindsight.
It was a risk selection- with the number 1 pick
And by risk, I don’t mean McCartin
I mean overlooking the obvious selection, that can always come back to haunt you!
In this case it has, very much so.
Even if McCartin didn’t get knocked out, and ended up a good key forward. Still would’ve been a mistake.

Re: Petracca
No really. It is hindsight. Unless you can prove your adamant selections from 8 years ago was nothing but petracca? and also prove that it was the obvisous selection even though (supposed) media experts where split. Can you prove that 8 years ago that you knew that McCartin as the best KF in the draft would be a complete bust?B.M wrote: ↑Sat 04 Sep 2021 12:49pm Not really

No s*** we can see now it is a mistake. BUt not s*** clubs make mistakes.
If McCartin didn't get knocked out and ended up a good key forward this thread would not exist.
