Nah mate he had history I could elaborate but I don't think that will do anyone any good it was a long time ago & he has turned his life around & good on himsaynta wrote: ↑Mon 30 Aug 2021 12:18pmThe eagles put out that Darling was a problem child, a loose cannon. All bulls*** of course and then picked him as soon as they could. The other 17 clubs were conned.B.M wrote: ↑Sun 29 Aug 2021 10:28pm That makes it ok then?
We took a small forward from WA
Over a midfield bull from Langwarren
my biggest issue with that draft was not taking Jack Darling who went 3 picks after our pick
He was tipped to go top 5 in his bottom age year. Slipped for some typical bulls*** reasons and the Eagles got there man
Then they got our pick two years later with pick 43
So in essence the got
Jack Darling and Jamie Cripps for pick 27 and 43
And we got Josh Saunders for (what was) pick 24 2010

Re: Luke Parker
No
I was a Parker fan. He dominated the local league and went to the Stingrays
I had hoped for the local Midfield beast
But as soon as Darling was available, I was ropable we didn’t take him!!!!
Cripps, handy as he is… doesn’t compare to Darling as far as impact goes
Hindsight
Says Parker
At the time
Darling was the logical choice… I mean to get him at 24 was an absolute steal!!!

Seemed to be plenty of issues with Darling pre-draft
Keeping in mind we just got burnt the previous year (2009) with the Lovett trade

Re: Luke Parker
Lovett was a 26yo proven d**khead with a known alcohol problem and a penchant for hitting women - oh and he hated training and wasn’t as fit as most suburban footballers. And he’d done pretty much FA in the AFL
We were stupid beyond belief for taking him
Darling was an 18 kid with a truck load of potential, a great work ethic and ultimately ended up being a gun.
Do you take a risk on a bloke at 26 with well known poor form
Do you take a risk on a kid with reported poor form
Our club eh…. Making all the right moves!!!

BTW
One ended up a disaster, never to play another AFL game
The other played 200+
Go figure?!

I just inferred one reason why we didnt take Darling was because in the previous year we wasted a 1st round draft pick on Lovett - so to take a very troubled teenager with our 1st pick was likely bad business no matter his talent
It is pretty clear in that article that Darling had issues in his draft year
Practically every club passed over him even West Coast didnt take him with their first pick .... either did Freo for that matter
Anyway kudos for Darling for putting his troubles behind him

Re: Luke Parker
If my memory is not failing me completely I seem to remember that the majority of that "history" was either made up or overblown in an attempt to put 17 other clubs off and allow Darling to fall to the eagles pick.
From the age article:
"Whether people listened to or believed the off-field rumours, Darling said, didn't worry him. But he took the police report from the Subiaco incident to all his club interviews, and hoped they didn't believe all they had heard. ''People say stuff and I don't know why. Even in my interview with Melbourne, they said 'we've heard you're a bit of a lad,' but I'm pretty quiet around the boys, really,'' Darling said. ''I think it's just … a bit of bad luck with being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've heard rumours I started the thing in Subiaco, but that's why I got evidence to show the clubs, so … I can show them the facts."

Re: Luke Parker
Didnt realise that Lovett was aquitted of the charge laid against him
Collingwood stuck with De Goey through his assault charge but we dropped Lovett like a hot potato
Lovett streaming thru the middle would have been pretty handy in the 2010 GF

Re: Luke Parker
Its the risk you take no one is squeaky clean & Lovett was the perfect choice football wise ATT & I for one didn't know his back ground off the field so that's were due diligence comes in .Surely the club must have known of his off field indisgressions before having the faith to part with their first pick or did we just run the gauntlet & hope it would all work out . Obliviously it didn't so now do you baulk at any bloke that has a history it's a fine line but Dusty would be the perfect example

Re: Luke Parker
He wasn’t even a good player
Flakey - makes Steven Motlop look like Joel Selwood
6 years at Essendon never finished top 10 in the B&F
Had a good game on ANZAC day… BFD… so did Mark McGough!!!

Re: Luke Parker
Initially I was against recruiting Parker, because of his age and salary cap concerns. But now believe if we can make room in our cap eg Ross & Battle depart then we should do our best to get him to the club. When you look at the coaches votes we had Steele on 100 points more than anyone else on the list. We simply cant leave so much for a single player, so adding Parker does make good sense!
The dream trade period would be us picking up a 22-24 yo ready to play capable ruckman (eg Flynn) to add to the list. If we trade out Battle then we will probably need to keep both Clavarino and Joyce on the list as backup key defenders.
Plus we will pick a young mid at the draft (1st round pick) and hopefully get both NGA's who are developing mids, all of a sudden the midfield has some depth going forward. Then we can afford to target a specific player with the pick we get in the Battle trade.

Re: Luke Parker
This is the sort of Idiotic thing that StKilda will do.
Go off and use its first round pick and use up all its salary cap on a "has been".
Seriously.
Players over the age of 28 careers fall faster than a sky diver without a parachute.
The Best 25 from any team is approximately 25 years old.
There is about 70 players over the age of 30 in the league or less than 10% of the listed players. All of them are in the twilight of their career
Teams in the Premiership window have average ages of around 25 years old.
