Did we draft two diabetics with our first selections in 2010 and 2014?

It was a smart arse thing to say, but it’s what we did!!!
You are pretty clearly insinuating diabetics are useless footballers!!

One is a Premiership player and has played 195 games and kicked 240 goals

The other's career was unfortunately cut short due to serious concussion issues - and if you check stats he tracking closely against Hawkins & Kennedy over their first 35 games

Dale Weightman was a Type 1 diabetic - Premiership player & 274 games

Nathan Bassett was a type 1 diabetic - All Australian & 200 games

Again give yourself an uppercut!!

On behalf of all posters who have ever criticised the decision to draft a diabetic and ...

To make good for all the diabetics that we have insulted over the years...

I propose the Saints add to our special days with...

A Diabetes Awareness Game

It'll piss us off because we'll have to relive the decision to draft McCartin but we could win an honorary award for the club with the most themed games in the world

I remember reading an article in Parker's draft year of Nathan Burke imploring the club to draft him, but the club had concerns about his lack of pace and kicking. He must have came from the same club or league as Burke?

Just like Stewart Loewe suggesting the club draft a kid he was coaching in Stefan Martin.

Both have had pretty decent careers.

Not sure Parkers first club - he is listed as Dandenong Stingrays - but he was born in Langwarrin - so may have played for either Langy or The 'mighty' Pines - so I would say definitely the same league - possibly the same club.

Given that Burkey is 22 years older than Luke - it is more likely he came to his attention as a coach/development officer

Luke played Juniors for Langwarrin

A long time EdiAsp junior coach has told me Luke is the best junior footballer he’s ever seen - and he coached Dylan Sheil

Amazed he didn’t go top 10

There will always be recruiting errors, recruiting is way too subjective and there is no way to predict how a young player will turn out
once he is in the AFL, despite all the methods used to assist the decision makers. The recruiters make their pick and then hope their gamble pays off.

In some instances, for the coach it's career defining or career ending.
If the recruiters stuff it up this year, there is always next year, not always that way for the coach.

It's a tough job that most of them don't excel at.

Parker would be great ... I would prefer Dylan Stephens but he would cost a pick unless a swap can be arranged (Battle) ?

Every club overlooked Parker - except Pies whose first pick was 45

Freo, Adel, Syd, Dogs & Saints had one pick before Parker was taken - the other 11 clubs had more than 2 (Suns had 9)

Its not like we were the only club that overlooked him

That makes it ok then?

We took a small forward from WA

Over a midfield bull from Langwarren

my biggest issue with that draft was not taking Jack Darling who went 3 picks after our pick

He was tipped to go top 5 in his bottom age year. Slipped for some typical bulls*** reasons and the Eagles got there man

Then they got our pick two years later with pick 43
So in essence the got
Jack Darling and Jamie Cripps for pick 27 and 43
And we got Josh Saunders for (what was) pick 24 2010

Magic list management

My son & Jack Darling played in the same comp & both made it to the development squad at West Perth . He could play but was a bit of a naughty boy & a few of his off field antics was the reason he fell so far .

Never been in a headline

Prepares well and is always in ripping Nick!!!

Ok you tell us - why did Parker slip to 40 and EVERY team (except the Pies) pass on him at least once?

BTW that small forward has played nearly 200 games and kicked over 200 goals and is a Premiership player .... something you seemingly are happy to ignore

The eagles put out that Darling was a problem child, a loose cannon. All bulls*** of course and then picked him as soon as they could. The other 17 clubs were conned.

He didn’t play 200 with us, did he?

He has played as a small forward in a vey good team (that has Kennedy and Darling as Key targets to crumb to)

He averages just over 1 goal a game and has been a serviceable small forward
a B Grade role player

Compared to
An AA midfielder, best and fairest, captain, also a premiership player. A Grade play maker

Not a good comparison

Why did Parker slide
They thought he was too slow, was a man child so he had no scope and he dominated because he was stronger than other 18yos

Thing is
They overlooked the fact that he could play the game

Sometimes if it quacks like a duck….

I find it pretty funny that you are so aggrieved by our decision not to draft Parker

Every year there are gun players looked over by all clubs

Swan, Hird, Gray, Montagna, Neale, Mitchell, Boyd, Priddis, Sloane, Steven, McGovern, Fisher, Brent Harvey, Betts, Charlie Cameron, Fantasia, Gawn, Laird, Breust, Papley, Rampe, Walters and on and on and on

If we had picked Parker he very likely would not have made a difference anyway given our window had been slammed shut by 2012

Are you related to Parker?

Well it is the Luke Parker thread and is only an opinion....aggrievied...strange choice of word. It seems like a comment or opinion or an answer to a question regarding Parker was provided which is pretty much spot on.
