No way Saints are moving to Tasmania and thank god for that

Post: # 1922670Post saynta »

https://www.saints.com.au/news/1007928/ ... ar-upgrade

"St Kilda Football Club is set to undertake a multi-million dollar upgrade of the Moorabbin Oval at RSEA Park to elevate the quality of the historic ground to levels commensurate with the best playing surfaces in the country.

The renovation, made possible with support of the Federal Government, Victorian State Government, Kingston City Council and the AFL, will include an overhaul of the ground’s current turf, drainage and irrigation system and footpaths."

The club does not contribute $1 dollar to the asset.

The presidents of all 18 clubs will vote against a Tasmanian club.

The elephant in the room is 10 clubs in Melbourne.

I'd actually support a move. It'd be brutal to miss games but if we got the same treatment as other clubs with priority picks, new facilities and a frothing mad fan base....I'm interested....we've literally sucked every **** on the mainland and been the AFL whipping club, what do we have to lose? I'm not sure there's a worse team than us in VFL/AFL history. A fresh start could be just the ticket.

Sting pretty bad though.

As I said, no way.

How long do you think they would keep their jumper, their colours or their name even. Weeks, months years? How about days.

Remember South Melbourne and Fitzroy. We would end up like those three pathetic old men in that TV show Jack irish.

As sad as it is, there is some brutal logic to what you say. If you look at the situation with complete objectivety, it's either us or North or both that are the obvious choice to remove from Melbourne. If this current list build doesn't trend north then we could be sitting ducks as it is a precarious fiscal environment we find ourselves while this Pandemic plays out.

Moving is folding, just a bit slower

Also if there was a move and not a new altogether they wouldn't get any draft concessions

Sad because it sets my JO dreams back. (I think Moorabbin is a 'dead' area for St KIlda, and maybe a graveyard , but...)

Happy because it is a bulwark against our immediate demise or transfer to Tassie or New Zealand or Shang Hai.

So bravo.

Local governments mnn....Didn't they send us packing? They can be bought I suppose, at the right price.

(Remember it wasn't St Kilda that was gonna move to Moorabbin, it was another club)

Go Saints!

Good surface the Junction

But it’s a cricket ground!!!

If the did the surface at Moorabbin it’ll finally be a complete facility

So is the MCG a cricket ground

Footy is supposed to be played on them.

Pitch notwithstanding.

I don’t wanna do another JO vs Moorabbin thing but if assumptions that are wrongly founded start slipping into what people assume to be ‘common sense’ that should be addressed.

So footy ground vs cricket ground..that has no basis.

I grew up at Moorabbin games. Saw my first game there in 1974/5 and I saw Plugger kick 10 on Silvagni. I watched footy there with family, mates from early teens through to a completely different bunch of people. My affinity is with Moorabbin not JO.

Our move to Moorabbin was a sketchy affair in the first place, as was cricket getting appropriated at the JO.

Yes, I agree , cricket clubs and associations are gangs of their own, with political ties of a deeper and more traditionally acceptable tenor that the riff-raff of footy clubs and their casinos.

J O was always a cricket ground. I can remember in early days my father had a St Kilda club medallion on his car key ring which he used to show to get into the ground, The footy club got nothing from those members. As I have said many times the cricket club bent the footy club over until they could take it no more and left.

MCG has a drop in square. And No footy team trains there!!!

JO has not. It has a turf centre square - 5 pitches on it all year round. They play there during our pre season!!!

Should they rope the centre square off during the week during pre season… that’d be great for full ground drills?!
Have to have a boundary line game plan!!!

Plus
StK CC would not be happy with footy training 3 days per week on there oval (having an impact on its pristine surface!) during their season, or even if the off season!!!
This is what was the issue in the first place!!!

Anecdotes from the club's official history note that often the cricket club would heckle the football team back in the day.

Yeah, they had their own stand.

Not to different to what goes on here at times unfortunately. I think that medallion got the whole family in for nix too, but I could be mistaken there.

I have no fond memories of the ground itself.

Drop in squares are a relatively new thing. (1996 at MCG)

You are suggesting that this is the way it always was and thus is some kind of 'common sense'..

Unfortunately, when the matters are rtaised to spoil this narrative it deteriorates into ...leave it alone...n ot that again...its a shi&t hole etc..,

It's true that Moorabbin was built for footy, for the Moorabbin Footy Club and based on MCG specs...a 'cricket ground'...where our premier 'footy game, the Grand Final was held in addition to other finals and 40 or so home and away games were held, trampling all over those pitches...for an entire season. The drop ion pitches have been highly criticized recently too...but that is an aside.

Anyway Cricket Victoria lost 2 million in '18-'19 and were in terrible trouble BEFORE Covid.

Just saying.

2007 and the Kingston Council showed us just how much they loved our modernization and redevelopment plan much heralded after our 1992 final gameday. The 'new world' lasted just 14 years.

Never say never.

Fear not pessimists the Moorabbin Oval is to be upgraded over the summer, surface, drainage etc, maybe even a grandstand for AFLW games.

Somehow the SAINTS conned all and sundry to pay for the latest upgrade.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

There were two main stands at JO, one for football club members and one for cricket club members. There was also a much smaller stand, maybe for the general public.

My grandfather had a cricket club membership and I used to accompany him on a lady's membership which children under 14 were allowed to use.

Was the MCG used by a premier club in the 80’s and 90s every weekend?

Or just used for shield games.

Not sure any clubs were doing pre-season on the G anyway

Been a long time since an AFL club regularly trained at the G

Yeah, that rings a bell. In any event the family got in for free with no monies going to the footy club.
