Re: Dunstan
we traded with the hawks two draft picks (24 and 59) for pick 19 (my memory must be playing tricks - i thought the picks for dunstan and acres were 17 and 18 but it seems it was 18 and 19 according to wiki).
that was a separate trade to mcevoy for savage and pick 18.
so if we hadn't traded mcevoy we would've had only pick 19 - and unless the hawks had taken dunstan with 18 we would have taken him at 19 and passed on acres. ergo we got acres and savage as a result of the mcevoy trade.

Re: Dunstan
Maybe we didn’t want to risk offering him a contract on the basis nobody went higher?
Either that or he was so p1ssed he told us he would never play for the saints again?
They are the only reasons I can think of

Re: Dunstan
Even if we had made Dunstan an offer ... IF we have a free agent coming in (lick your lips at that prospect) and Dunstan went out as an unrestricted free agent ... then there would be zero compensation for Dunstan to us ... as we had the free agent come in.
No offer helps any club get him - even as a rookie.

Re: Dunstan
All of a sudden I've got a bad feeling about Dunny leaving and possibly going to the Suns.
Imagine if the Suns storm onto the finals next year and Dunny plays a massive role in their meteoric rise...and we end up bottom 4.
I fear of what could happen to SS..

Re: Dunstan
Good on him if helps them to finals. I don't see how Dunstan can be a premiership player, we need to keep improving our list and turning over those who aren't- especially after 6 or 7 mediocre years!

My mistake it was McEvoy , 24 and 59 for Savage , 18 and 19. ( as you say were Dunstan and Acres .saynta wrote: ↑Wed 25 Aug 2021 9:08pmI thought pick 17 and SAVAGE. For the big boy. Hence Dunstan and Acres, desertsaint wrote: ↑Wed 25 Aug 2021 8:49pm the mcevoy pick actually allowed us to get acres, not dunstan. we picked them at 17 and 18. hence if we had not done the trade we would have selected only one. we selected dunny first, ergo, it was most likely acres who we would've passed on.
not that it makes much difference - even worse in fact given acres did less for the club and gave two fewer seasons.

Absolutely hope he continues his career and does well, that post was attempted satire. The Barometer wrote: ↑Wed 25 Aug 2021 10:14pmGood on him if helps them to finals. I was always a Dunny supporter, even right up until his game against the Tiges but that game confirmed for me he had to go. Then I heard he was told his time at the club was up was up before round 1 and it all made sense. A shame but as they say at the bank, "next teller".

Re: Dunstan
Fair call. I don't mind whether Dunstan plays in the AFL or somewhere else - footy is probably all he knows so, good on him trying to extract a dollar somewhere else. But I don't see him as being part of a top 8 midfield - let alone a Premiership one. If he is indeed gone from Moorabbin - hallelujah.Vortex wrote: ↑Thu 26 Aug 2021 10:17amAbsolutely hope he continues his career and does well, that post was attempted satire. The Barometer wrote: ↑Wed 25 Aug 2021 10:14pmGood on him if helps them to finals. The simple fact is that he's very much a remnant - along with Ross to a degree - of the massively underwhelming poor development of young talent in the Cho era. My God we were abominable. I get how a poor runner who's not got much speed is largely consigned to that outcome by twitch fibres in muscles. But, I still can't get my head around how a first round pick who came arrived as a poor kick; is still a poor kick. That speaks to me about work-rate and desire. There's an endless pool of resources at AFL level for players wanting to improve specific skills. Always revert to S Loewe - poor kick who made himself into a very reliable kick with Huddo's help. Mechanics can be fixed with work and desire. I don't see that with Dunstan. His one good skill is clearance extraction but the rest is mediocre to poor. We have to be better than that.
Go you red, black & white warriors

Re: Dunstan
Big difference between set shots and kicking in general play
Name someone who started out a poor field kick and ended up a good kick?!
I bet you Dunstan kicked it ok at training in drills

Re: Dunstan
I think Dunstan's "poor kicking" ability is almost the biggest myth going around here atm. Totally overblown.
His career disposal efficiency is about 70% which is more than respectable and better than quite a few on our list.

Re: Dunstan
From afl.com.au
"While it was discussed that he may have been offered a one-year deal later in the off-season, both parties came to the realisation it was best to go their separate ways.
The 26-year-old had grown tired of consistently being on the fringe at the Saints after the recruitment of Brad Crouch, Dan Hannebery and Zak Jones and the emergence of Jack Bytel."
Reason enough.

Re: Dunstan
Pretty much most of his kicks are mongrels
He charged out of the centre a few weeks back after winning a centre clearance
And scrubbed a kick, that you’d see in local footy.
Kicks a little better over the mark, but on the run he’s a putrid kick
The fact he averages 4.5 clangers from 10 kicks over his career is poor!

Re: Dunstan
Across all midfielders in the competition he would rank bottom five for foot skills. It's not going to change. That kind of disposal robs us from scoring and aids the opposition in scoring. We lose both ways. His disposal is a net negative most weeks

That sounds like a lot of anecdotes and not much data!B.M wrote: ↑Thu 26 Aug 2021 2:33pm Pretty much most of his kicks are mongrels

Compare him to one of your favs, Ross. They both average the exact amount of clangers over their career.
And here's an anecdote, we all saw Ross miss a goal from the goal square under little pressure this year!!

Re: Dunstan
See Footywire for stats. In 2021 Dunstan averaged 5.6 turnovers per game. There are no stats for grubbers, though, as you're not expected to do that as a league footballer

Re: Dunstan
Yep, behind players like Petracca, Wines, Bont, Mitchell, Rich, Adams, Sheed...
He's also top 30 in the league for Clearances, Inside 50s, Tackles and Contested Possessions.
More than earns his spot.

Re: Dunstan
Not sure Dunstan is what the Suns need, unless they want to languish for the forseeable future.
I think Ben King and Jack Lukosius will re-sign with The Suns, but until he does, Bing is coming to the Saints.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
