in a battle with Long and Lonie for what i see as 1 small forward spot - Higgins and Butler look set

Played well Sat night but consistency like with Lonie and Long is the issue.

As it stands if you want to keep one keep the cheapest. Any interest in any of them take what you can while you can.

Depth players at best in good sides

For me...
Accepting that life is not easy for small forwards, especially opportunistic one, the question for me is what can they offer if things don’t go there way.

Lonie: will chase, attack the contest and continually try to crumb off packs - but he’s not overly quick, easily brushed off tackles and his skills aren’t so flash that he’ll make the most of limited opportunities

Kent: Ability to be damaging if he can find space, can use some speed and can be accurate if he gets his eye in - but doesn’t take contested grabs, doesn’t crumb well, is fast but not blisteringly so, doesn’t find a lot of space, kicking inconsistent. The closest thing to a strength I can see is that if the opposition defence is disorganised or we get on a run, he can find holes in a poor defence

Long: very hard working, tough, chases, bumps and tries to throw his weight around, disposal is quite good but decision making erratic. Also has the versatility to play on a half back flank - but prone to really bad decision making, doesn’t hit the scoreboard enough

Personally for me... Long is the only viable option to persevere with

Sorry but Lonie is finished. Ratten doesn't think much of him.

In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Agree. Seen enough of Kent and Lonie. They’ve both had heaps of opportunity to cement places and have looked good at times, but neither has been able to consistently deliver. Kent is 27, Lonie about to turn 25.
Long I feel could still be an excellent player. He has the raw material that neither Kent or Lonie do.

Bump. Back to his SOP last night. One decent game in amongst a line of spuds. Sincerely hope he doesn't feature on our list next year.

Drops too many marks and fumbles the ball. Will be just back up next year. Like his aggression though.

Whaa?????

Whats your definition of aggression????? Acting like a Headless Chook running around being ineffective?

Gotta be cut from the list ASAP!!!

If he's kept as depth then that says a lot about the standard this club accepts.

Kent is a servicable back up player and thats it. If we want to improve our list we have to delist players like him and replace them with kids from the draft. Kids like Windhager, Owens & Peris would go past Kent very quickly.

Gresh will be a significant upgrade, we really miss his spark in the middle and up forward.
Left field idea, if we are happy with our present small/med defenders could Paton swing forward? If I remember correctly he kicked four in an intra club in his first year, maybe he has some forward skills?
Rotate through mids with Gresh?

Will be playing for his career next week.

Must be on the very edge of delisting

3 goals and 18 possession game vs Freo might get him the last spot on the list

Said it after last week, Kent’s MO is playing 1 good game every 4, and that 1 game keeps him hanging around just long enough to get his next good game in, and keep himself in the team.

1 in 4 seems generous to me.

I’d take that

Kicking is a major problem. But not the lone ranger there. +Ross, Dunstan, Jones, Webster, Crouch. Needs to be one of the many priorities over Summer.

So what’s the chances of some of the players doing what Sinclair did…get super fit and train your butt off over summer?

We’ll know next year if getting pissed and having backyard bbq’s was the priority

Small Forwards for me in 2022 will be Higgins, Butler and Gresham relieving playing parts of the game there.
Back up: Long as a year on his contract so he is an option.
The 2 Uncontracted:
Lonie- he is finished- is not fast & is not strong or nuggety & easily brushed off. I expect him to be delisted.
Kent- if they want to keep 1 as a squad player Id keep Kent.

No worse than Butler this season. We need forwards who kick goals regularly.

Thought he’s been pretty good over the last couple of weeks

Obviously so has Ratten

He’s held his spot over Long and Lonie

Only 1 more game to go and then we are into the culling season.

I wonder if anyone unexpected gets culled.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Paton is a genuine AA backman with very good skills and an ability to stay focussed on a job. He's not required up forward, he's our best small back by a mile.
