Noticed one passage when they moved it out of their back half, chippy chippy to the loose man moving into space with our players guarding grass in zone/space defence. We couldn't shut the movement down.
By contrast when we moved out of defence in a structured way, they played man on man, shut down all the outlets and forced the dump kick down the line to 50/50.
Why do we stick with the zone and not play man on man?
Is it to have forwards in space on turnover or to get an extra back deeper?
Seems like we try and create an illusion of no space to kick to but good teams like Geelong know better and find targets. We cut off a few kicks by rushing and spoiling the receiver but it's not a reliable strategy against good kickers/smart movers.
We struggle to keep up with the shell game and allow the loose into space. Watching teams consistently outsmart us like this is very frustrating

A tactic that should be used to stop a run on. Get things back on an even footing, and then go back to plan or A+.

There you go - our problem in one - we try Plan B - then never revert to plan A - have a look at why we give up leads

When you are minus 40 in contested ball it is hard to stop any team, let alone a top team , play their game style.
Look at first why they had so much of the ball, Marshall's worst game I have seen.

2/ do NOT zone off through the middle

More info: whole coaching panel or did Ratts veto a flash of genius from his assistants. Still find it hard to agree out coached - but accept Tony74s view - when our chaps fumble at critical times and Hill gifts goals and there are key umpiring errors that lead directly to scores in a close game. How does that work, we should have won by how much?

Know nothing coach me saw a game where our players just stopped taking the game on and became reactive and could not adjust to King being disabled and mid field group became impotent, not even speed humps. I imagine Ratts said boys think, remember the plan, play to it, compose. Mids try to at least neutralise clearances. What moves should he have made? Can't just say outcoached without the why bit, can you?

Geelong kept the ball off StK and controlled the tempo of the game. Could not get our hands on it!!!

Danger and Guthrie dominated around the ball

And when it got to the outside they maintained possession of the footy.
There needed to be more aggressive pressing up

And we needed to turn it into a faster tempo turn over game.

We may have lost by more

But could have won.

Because reality is… after Qtr time we lost by 45 points

Bottom line is we lost was it coaching was it umpiring was it player error doesn't really matter look at the result in 20 years time it will still say the same thing we lost .Gave ourselves a real chance to beat Geelong at home for the fist time in decades but could not get it done typical St.Kilda close but not close enough .

Tony74 as pretty much eluded to the fact Ratts needs better coaches around him or his coaching isn't good enough to match it with the best.

So we are either sacking Ratts for Clarkson
Hiring a senior assistant to help Ratts..??
