Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
….after our best season since 1973? In 92.
In ‘93 it was 10-10.
What happened there? Would it happen like that in 2021?

Stan Alves end of 1998 and GT end of 2006
Both sacked following back to back finals showings !!!
Really quite disturbing thought processes at the club sometimes

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
I liked Shedldn and thought he deserved much better.
Nevertheless, no other club snpped him up when he was sacked. (In fact, in the past 40 years we've only had ONE coach who was pursued by other clubs -- R. Lyon.)
In '93, the team fell apart after Nicky Wimnar walked out (straight after the legendary Vic Park game).
Sheldon was a good coach but no tactical genius -- he could get picked apart. And you could argue that a team featuring Lockett, Loewe, Winmar, Harvey, Burke, Frawley, etc., was our best side EVER.

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Well, I guess that’s the answer….time and again, a coach lifts the team, raises expectations, seemingly falters, and is sacked…….Waltzing St Kilda wrote: ↑Mon 02 Aug 2021 5:01pm I liked Shedldn….

But if your suggesting je could be out coached - then better he be gone.
Of course it took ‘94, ‘95, ‘96 in mediocrity before liftoff in ‘97 under Alves…Then that damn Sydney final in ‘98 with Nicky missing that kick…I sensed it was all over them too….
….so did the admin I suppose.
But each time, the newbie comes in and we sink big time!!
Even dipped in Lyons first year!

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
At the end of 93 the club wanted to get rid of Hudson and Sheldon wanted him to stay. Sheldon gave the club an ultimatum that Hudson stays or he leaves too.
I was sitting next to Kenny in the waiting room hospital a few months ago. I really wanted to ask him a few questions about his time at the Saints but thought better not.

So what was the problem with Hudson? Care to share? Anything that might give insight into how things work in general?

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Good interview with him on the Unpluggered podcast.
I think he said that the Sheldon/Hudson crew were seen to be getting a bit too powerful.... But I could be wrong.

Politics usually comes into it and it happens at every club.
Kennett and Clarkson have had an ongoing power struggle and the Hawthorn president finally got his way
Gee!! Footy was fun to watch as a Saints fan in 91/92 with us back in the finals after the drought in the 80's

Maybe that's why Ratts didn't want to make the final this year?
Back to back finals at St K means the arse, however 6 years of promise equals job security - smart guy!

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Im not sure why Sheldon left - but I loved his twirly angry eyes - ask Craig Davenport
But i do remember that Stan Alves and Plympton ha a fall out
Ken didnt come to coaching with any great prior record so cant really be sure if he was a tactical genius or not
But I do know that every coach can get pulled apart if they are rigid in their game plan
R Lyons playbook read Plan A & Plan B
If things were going bad and he had to turn plan B it would say see plan A

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
The fact he got the job
And David Parkin was available
Strange??
Maybe Parkin wasn’t interested in StK
But then again, a list with Loewe, Lockett, Winmar, Burke, Frawley
And kids like Harvey, Bowery, Rice, Danyels
Surely it was a desirable job?!

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Lockett was still there under Alves. Made no sense at the time that Kenny got the chop. Short season too in 1993 for some reason.

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Looks like Sheldon won 5 of his last 6 games for us, but although we finished 10-10 we were 12th.
'94 was pretty terrible under Alves. 7 wins and a percentage less than 75.

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
I seem to remember the club finally seemed abit stable and we were doing ok on and off the field under Sheldon and Hudson.
Hudson was often seen actively involved in the footy side of things pretty sure match day also and the 2 got on really well.
I dont know where it came from but the media / experts became very vocal about how Hudson was president and shouldn't be
so hands on and I do remember him coming out and publicly saying he would take a step back and it all seemed to spiral downward.
Funny nowaday with all the assistants and director of coaching etc maybe we were doing that back then.

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
was it another infamous Stkilda tail wagging the dog situation with Sheldon?
Maybe he wanted Lockett to train a bit

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Not sure about Kenny, though I think it was between him and the board, not performance driven. Alves and Watters both suffered from the tail wagging the dog, and as a very long time Saints supporter, I know it has been a big factor in our lack of success. We have had many weak administrations over the decades who thought a big name on the field is what success is all about, rather than having a good team.

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
I was friendly back them with a couple of sponsors who were very close to Kenny and Hudson. Even got invited to a box and also drinks with the pair.I declined for some reason. It was a long time ago.
Don't remember the full story but Kenny and Hudson were very close with each other but did not socialise with the players at all.

Re: Why did Ken Sheldon go in ‘93?
Sheldon got done over twice by the Saints.
Firstly when they farked off his right man Hudson.
Second when they farked off Sheldon himself.
Maybe the club was worried they weren't in the running for another spoon with those 2 at the helm.
Idiots.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
