Our draft hand

Post: # 1916501Post CURLY »

Looks like a healthy in take for next season. Got a top 10 pick plus the 2 NGA kids rated in the top 25. Throw in Heath as one of the best Under age rucks and the wildcard Sharman who looks promising.

Genuinely think we have a bit of tradable currency as well.

Get rid of good players for draft picks…

That’s worked for us in the past!!!

If they have currency, doesn’t that suggest they are valuable players?

More thinking of players that if they wanted to go we have ready made replacements.

Why couldnt you add that content to the current sticky threads?

But I doubt any of our NGA will be rated or bid on in the top 40.

Yep can’t stand still
Ofcourse you move players on to not do so aduggests we are too 4 list quality right now - we are not
We will not draft our way to a flag while Steele and co are around so we need to be smart draft and trade wise

Is there a CHB available as a free agent?
Daniel Talia perhaps?

Who is tradeable.
Billings and Dunstan are both restricted free agents - no trade value there.

Won't we get compensation picks if we lose them to free agency?

Owens by a SA Draft watcher on the back of one trial match. If the Nationals go ahead a lot will depend on their form there. But as it stands only Windhager and Peris will be playing with Owens previously named as reserve. I have watched all of their available games this year and Windhager is the most likely around pick 40, Peris later 50-60. Owens had one out of the box game in a trial but before that I doubt he even gets drafted at the National draft, most likely a rookie chance. McLennan is an unknown as he has been injured for sometime. On this years form Beilby wont get drafted IMO.

Im surprised we didnt look at Blake Schlensog at the MSD? No other club selected him either there could be some off field issues? The one photo Ive seen of him of his time at Geelong he had purple hair.

The best key position player outside the AFL has emerged and looms as both a plug and play piece and a long-term answer. A former Geelong Category B rookie, Blake Schlensog was unlucky to be delisted at the conclusion of the 2020 season, following rapid improvement in his two-year stint with the Cats.

AFL Draft wrap with a focus on Blake Schlensog, the best key position player outside the AFL and the solution to your club's key defender.

I believe you are way too generous. We certainly do not have 2 NGA kids rated in the top 25.

We may have one in Owens which is welcome, but even he is probably not top 30.

As in who?

We are also weakened in that we have a 2 FA s and RFA. All of whom if they go could result in us getting not much in return.

There is a lot of hype on Billing gaining an extra first rounder for us if he walks, but I just cannot see any other club stumping up enough cash.

Even Battle is that awkward height that would not see him generate much in return.

Think if Dunstan or Ross wanted to go we'd get a 2nd round as either a trade or compo in Dunstans case. With Bytal ready to take the next step. If Billings left late 1st early second with Clarke Gresham Higgins to come back.

Schlensog is exactly the type of KP player St Kilda has to recruit to play either forward or back, his stats in the WAFL are certainly impressive, he could well be a good option to replace Jake Carlisle.

What do you guys think about trading Seb Ross and Billings for either draft picks or players or both they still have currency and as much as I like Seb and Jack we need picks plus we have gresh, Clarke, Patton to come back next season plus we should I think go after Crouch of Adelaide.
As for KPP Oscar Mcdonald is a CHB at Carlton is 24 played 81 games and 196cm right age bracket experience and available.

Alex Rance and Paddy McCartin both played for the Essendon reserves' reserves' emergency scratch team.

Our next CHB and CHF in one game on free display.

Paddy took a load of grabs too.

Saints apparently spoken to Narkles management...he’d be perfect complement to our midfield , has speed , decent grunt just needs opportunities and shouldn’t cost the earth ..,go hard I say and still take top pick to draft to grab another best mid
Next year = Bing time.

What about this story..

Before the 2017 draft there was a heated debate around Nick Coffield and Aaron Naughton at the St Kilda list management meeting.

List boss Tony Elshaug was adamant Naughton was the Saints’ man if he was still there at Pick 8 and he had most of his recruiters on side.

But Alan Richardson disagreed. The coach wanted more midfielders and pushed hard for Coffield. Richardson won the discussion and St Kilda went with the on-baller.

Those in the room for the debate said Richardson was adamant that they needed more ball-winners.

It’s why coaches shouldn’t have a say in drafting

They are looking for what the TEAM needs over the next few years, because they are looking out for their job.

Drafting is what the CLUB needs for the next 12 years and that is quality

There should NEVER be an emphasis on player type but rather the next best available talent!

It caused the big stuff up in 2014 (going for player type!)

Only time you look at player type in recruiting
Mature age recruits
Trading
Rookies

National draft is for talent, if that means you end up with two FFs on your list, one plays another role or ends up in a trade for another quality player.
You NEVER overlook quality!

Coffield is NOT a midfielder. Didn’t even play as a mid a an u18

Disappointing to hear that about Richo but it’s not the least bit surprising.

I always thought I saw his hand in the Hannebery trade too as a Hail Mary move to save his career. It’s why I don’t like the idea of putting performance based expectations on coaches e.g. have to make finals next year
It forces them to get desperate and make high risk, low percentage short term decisions at the expense of development

What’s more infuriating is the one time he didn’t put his foot down is the McCartin v Petracca debate where in Quayle’s article, he seems to have some concerns with the choice but backs the recruiters

Richardson was the worst coach we had at the club since Malcolm Blight. Although Blight only f.....d us over for 12 months, Richardson lead us to a slow painful death over 6 long years. The longest 6 years of my time supporting St Kilda, because blind freddy could see he was a fool, but the club kept extending him. Even the dark years of the 80's were more palatable than the Richardson era!

Can’t believe he got 6 years out of us????? Incompetent moron
It’s astounding
I also reckon his beige game plan stifled some players development too....who knows we could’ve taken Bont and turned him into a good honest defender....

Did Richardson EVER have a list capable of being a finals contender?

Serious question?
