Re: Butler's move
butler's a very smart footballer, unfortunately down on form and maybe a spell would do him well,

You're probably right, but I'd prefer to get Higgins back before Butler goes outdesertsaint wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 10:18pm butler's a very smart footballer, unfortunately down on form and maybe a spell would do him well,

Re: Butler's move
Funny/Odd
A thread based on a player's pressure act that affected a kick. It was border line a push in the back and he'd already given away some silly frees and a 50m penalty
If that was of the whipping boys like Ben Long, there'd be hoards calling him undisciplined and asking for him to be dropped
I like Butler. His work rate and effort cannot be questioned. He just needs to holds his marks when he gets opportunities and perhaps a little luck with his kicking

Re: Butler's move
I'd drop Butler. A few times on Saturday night, he did the same things as last year except the ball hasn't gone his way.
Not saying that he is a poor player - far from it, but his confidence is down, and Higgins has performed better.
Reset him for the last few rounds this year, or early next year - he's a keeper, but just down on form.

Re: Butler's move
Agree, the commentators said he was primed to launch like a sprinter as soon as ump called play on, but any closer and ump would have called a push in the back.Scollop wrote: ↑Mon 12 Jul 2021 12:31am Funny/Odd

I always check his pressure acts on AFL app, his PA is usually up with Steele n Crouch, so it appears he is vigorous.
Sadly the ball isn't bouncing his way like it did last year.

Re: Butler's move
If the problem is that the ball isn't bouncing the right way then that's all the more reason to keep him in
Cause it aint going to bounce the wrong way forever

Re: Butler's move
Get with it - Buttler's pressure was first class and that has a positive effect on the whole team. If he keeps up this current endeavour he will very likely get his magic back, but I'll go with the selection committee's decision, as they know more than me ...

Re: Butler's move
I'd also prefer playing Butler's left small toenail before I'd consider Lonie replacing him.saintbob wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 10:48pmYou're probably right, but I'd prefer to get Higgins back before Butler goes outdesertsaint wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 10:18pm butler's a very smart footballer, unfortunately down on form and maybe a spell would do him well,

Re: Butler's move
If Higgins comes back in who gets dropped.Butlers name will be in the mix to miss out,but to me he looks like he is getting closer to a standout game like he had early last year. But as I said who misses out

Re: Butler's move
I would guess Kent. I'm not sure he did enough to overtake Butler in the pecking order. Byrnes, Highmore, McKenzie and Long all playing good footy. Connolly needs games, has not done anything thing wrong & importantly may be our lucky charm.

Re: Butler's move
I'm interested people are impressed with Butler's endeavour. He doesn't seem to me to have a team-first mentality at all. Bit of a show pony I'd have said. He tries to do too much - when he's in form, it doesn't matter cos we see smart plays and clever goals and he gets the kudos. But while he's out of form, we just see misses and stupid frees against. What are his stats for goal assists? (where can we find those?)

Re: Butler's move
They won’t replace a small forward with an inside mid.
Don’t be too surprised if Lonie and Higgins replaced Kent and Butler
Last time they rewarded VFL dominance it was Dunstan

Re: Butler's move
Lonie needs to do that consistently for weeks to knock the door down. Unfortunately his consistency is his inconsistency at AFL level, horribly one sided, slow and not strong enough to be that slow. Shows incredible spirit but they pay mascots for that.
He's behind Higgins and Butler, now Long. Include Kent now and all this with Gresham out for the season.

Butler was StK lowest rated player
Continually gave away soft frees and looks horribly out of form
Needs to get back to doing the basics well
[/quote]
Should have got a free kick in the goal square when he tackled Rich who just through it

Re: Butler's move
Good discussion - Butler has not reached anywhere near his form of the first half on 2020.
If it was me and Higgins is fit, then Kent stays and Butler has a spell.

Re: Butler's move
The law states that a free is a awarded against a player who pushes or bumps an opposition player in the back.
Simple eh?
Not so fast.
What is a player's back? Is it the back or rear of a player, or specifically that part of the anatomy which we refer to as our "back" - below the neck but above the waist - or above the L5 vertebra. if it's the latter, you can push a player in the bum or the back of the legs but you can't trip them. Can a push be a trip? Or is a push the reverse of a trip?
Generally, a player's waist is where their shorts sit on the hips. If player's were 70+ yo, their waist would move upward towards their chest.
I thought Butler's push was close to the back, maybe just on the waistline. Play on was probably a good call, although we rarely get "close ones". The good thing about Dan Butler's move was that he was awake. Generally, this was a feature of his game. I think he is close to coming back into form - doing all the hard things is always the road to success.

Re: Butler's move
Butler ------------------------------------->Daylight----------------------------------------->Kent He should never ever play in the first. He's in the same category as Paul Hunter, with PH shading him. Kent offers nothing! Can''t mark. Can't kick. Can't tackle. Can't handball. Shirks contests. Runs around like a headless chook. Takes up list space. Can I say useless? Ugh!!!!!

Re: Butler's move
I'll agree that St Plugger has poured a fair amount of mayo over that post in terms of belittling Kent's ability, quite harsh but do you think Kent should be selected before Butler this week?

Re: Butler's move
Don't think St Plugger actually watched the game or Kent last Saturday night or he would have seen Kent put on a perfect block which allowed King to mark and goal.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Wed 14 Jul 2021 7:31pmI'll agree that St Plugger has poured a fair amount of mayo over that post in terms of belittling Kent's ability, quite harsh but do you think Kent should be selected before Butler this week?
