Re: Gears 2022 100%
Not sure how he can possibly get a game
We are missing best 22 players
Paton
Gresham
Clark
And there is no way I’d give him a game in tonight’s team
Then you’ve got
Bytel, Coffield, Battle missing also
He would be behind plenty - what’s the point
Give his spot on the team to a younger more talented player
Give his spot on the list to a kid to develop

Gee Connolly was good tonight
I’d hate to see Geary take his spot

Would be extremely selfish of him to push out a young player, who already deserves to be played over him.

Geary wouldn't be in our top 28 players next year. Must retire. Maybe captain of Sandy/St Kilda assistant coach?

Yep, make him Sandy's assistant coach and our match day runner. He can obviously get a message across and is respected by the playing group.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 5:35am Geary wouldn't be in our top 28 players next year. Must retire. Maybe captain of Sandy/St Kilda assistant coach?

Check your source again Curly. Things can change overnight. Had they have been smashed last night Geary begins to look like a leadership legend, this morning he looks like yesterday's hero. However, he isn't the first of the depth players I'd get rid of. He'd be a handy medical sub.

Still tend to agree, even in the afterglow of last night. The problem this list has, and it's a big problem, you can't trust them, we've been here before, too many times. Still a lot of very young and green players make up a big part of our best 22. Having said that, and ironically, the silver lining to the season has been getting games into young and green players.CQ SAINT wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 10:10am Check your source again Curly. You need insurance against a a significant injury list like we've had.
Highmore, Byrnes and Connolly. That's a solid silver lining aye

Re: Gears 2022 100%
I don't really understand why the club should offer Geary any off-field position, surely we're not into some sort of superannuation scheme for former players. It's all very well to laud a player who has been a loyal servant of the club but 99.99% of retired or delisted players have had to venture out into the cruel world and had to forge for themselves!Ghost Like wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 9:59amYep, make him Sandy's assistant coach and our match day runner. Good governance is appointing/employing people based on their proven qualifications and merit, St Kilda is not the ALP!!! Or the Maritime Union of Australia - who have just done a disgusting deal with the world's largest stevedoring company, Hutchsion Ports whereby "up to 70 per cent of new hires at Hutchison Ports will have to be sourced from employees’ “families and friends” and a union list of names as part of what the wharfies’ union is calling a groundbreaking deal."
Not a bad racket when you consider that the average crane operator on the docks is said to be earning $170,000....
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Re: Gears 2022 100%
That has changed, it used to be 100% were sourced from family or friends. For as long as I can remember it was always a closed shop. I worked there in the 80s & one of my brothers was there in the 70s.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 2:52pmI don't really understand why the club should offer Geary any off-field position, surely we're not into some sort of superannuation scheme for former players. Re: Gears 2022 100%
Apart from the political rant, I totally agree. It's hardly a ruthless decision not to renew and either the CEO is weak or the COO feels guilty for doing the Hannas dealSanctorum wrote: ↑Sun 11 Jul 2021 2:52pmI don't really understand why the club should offer Geary any off-field position, surely we're not into some sort of superannuation scheme for former players. The problem with giving him a contract is that there is a very high probability that you will get a very similar output to what we've seen the last 2 years
When someone is injured for a lengthy period of time they need some games to get touch and regain their form. We can't afford to be carrying passengers at a stage when we need to push for finals campaigns.
Yes, I know he was good in the elimination final last year (2020), but he'll be 2 years older (if we make finals in 2022) and I don't think he has the speed and power in his body that he used to have

Re: Gears 2022 100%
This post sums up how much rubbish is in this entire topic
OP opines that there will be a one year contract, we know this as a fact…..no we don’t
However that doesn’t stop any number of “supporters” piling on, as if the whole thing was a fait accompli
Including this beauty from Teflon, stating that if true then Geary was holding the club to ransom and it was a selfish move, this all based on …….
Talk about running amok with no evidence
My view is that if he does get a contract, he would certainly step down as captain, he would certainly (based on his previous body of work) not expect to be gifted games and as for been selfish or any other indictment…. Have you ever watched him play, listened to him , it strikes me as not in his make up

Who knows hence why IMO IF it’s true and he plays on he’s not thinking about the best thing for our footy club cause he will not as an ex captain be content to see out his days in the vfl
Face facts he is past it, cooked, no longer best 22
It’s been great, he’s been well remunerated too but he is finished and I truly hope the club get that cause Connolly Coffield and any other kid needs the game time
It’s about team not individuals

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Selwood has just re-signed, and I suppose it isn't a surprise.
Cotchin might be in trouble, but I don't expect him to retire.
Players don't wanna retire.
Even Burkey. Remember he kept going. A lot wanna keep going.
When Gears steps down graciously, all of you lot bagging on him (woops..did I ?) will look awful and evil and guilty...
But Gears is not playing anywhere at the level of the above two..
And we just dragged Chips Frawley out of retirement and it hasn't exactly been a success...knock on wood twice for reverse of luck..

It's an interesting argument whether he was missed this season OR who was missed more, Geary or Paton OR would the emergence of Sinclair as clear best 22 not have happened.

Think Gears can play at both ends in a defensive role the final against WB was huge.

good on the club. fqf.
great leader, handy backup. will be a great mentor for the youngsters in a team with far to few good role models.
