Given that some posters have said he hasn't been best 22 for two seasons you know they have no idea. 2020 Final v WB Geary was one of the best on ground.

It’s bollocks
34 , injury prone, slow, cant kick and is a liability when bringing it out if defence
We must move on
Pathetic IF true
We have to try to be competitive. He would not get a gig at any other club except perhaps GC, and I don’t think even they would offer home a year.
We have to be competitive. One precious spot should not be given away for sentimental reasons.

I don’t have a clue to be honest. I like the way he looks. He looks solid. You know he tries and presents. The ball bounces off his chest. He is not deft of touch, agile, fluid and those things don’t get better with age. I loved the way he turned up on the forward line, but I was crushed watching him drop the mark at the most desperate of moments..
Maybe he would get a game. Dunno. The bottom four or even six of many clubs is a cavern sometimes.
Thing is, does St Kilda want be competitive? Or does St Kilda want to honor its champs and warriors by playing them pats their due date. (Or worse, offering them contracts as back up players, and just letting them quit mid season anyway..truly shambolic..and then saying, ‘good o ya ‘ol fella’. It’s nice but it is a competition where absolutely everything has to go right plus then some.
He may stay on the list, because we just can’t find anyone else. Fair enough. All good.
I suggest we use that space to invest in youth or buy a budget replacement player…and yes, the latter is not a popular move, but a pragmatic one. In order to maximize competitiveness week- to-week. So if no youth works draft wise, then get a fringe player about 25/26 (even 27) who provides good service, realizes they are lucky, is owed nothing, and promises not to quit mid-season. I would say a ‘Wood” or a McKernan type. Now the latter hasn’t worked, but that kind of thing.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Re: Gears 2022 100%
Let’s look at the roles he can play
Defensive forward
Is he better or does he have more scope than Long or Battle?
Defensive Wing
Is he better than Ross, Battle or McKenzie (now, not in the past)?
Small Defender
Is he better than Paton or Webster?
To me he’s a long way back in the queue

Re: Gears 2022 100%
It's certainly true that in the past I have bagged the club's decision to appoint Geary captain, primarily because I never believed that his performance as a player was deserving of him being in the team's "best 22" which meant he was selected simply because of his position as skipper.
Put it this way, can anyone actually nominate a single game, let alone a multitude of games, when Geary has actually through sheer force of his leadership skills dragged his team over the line and win since he took over from Riewoldt in 2017?? He's no Pendlebury, Selwood etc etc.....now if you regard these comments as disrespectful, I plead guilty - but its the truth, there's no point in gilding the lily!
As I have commented earlier in this thread, if the club believes the team requires a mature-aged strong leader then I'd much sooner they get hold of former Melbourne skipper and 300 game veteran Nathan Jones (same age as Geary), who has leadership skills and experience in spades - and I expect he would happily cross over to the team he supported as a kid, for a token pay packet.
Our club, if it is serious about having a strong playing list that expects to contend for finals in 2022 and beyond has to dispose every player that is mediocre, so apart from Geary I would hope the club will also delist McKernan, Hunter, Frawley, Alabakis and Lonie, and bring in a crop of youngsters, of which the club has very few on the list right now.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

I like that idea, would much rather Jones than Geary on the field if I had to choose.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Fri 09 Jul 2021 12:26pmIt's certainly true that in the past I have bagged the club's decision to appoint Geary captain, primarily because I never believed that his performance as a player was deserving of him being in the team's "best 22" which meant he was selected simply because of his position as skipper.

Gotta say, it would have been more fun to go the other way, and make him 53, but that is the troll in me.

Re: Gears 2022 100%
There’s plenty of players clubs wouldn’t trade or draft but if they were on your list theyed play seniors. Geary is one of them.Teflon wrote: ↑Sat 10 Jul 2021 8:21pmHe’d walk into any side though right?
