Before last night:
Since 1980, we have beaten Richmond 6 times at the MCG.
Some other random facts;
Round 4, 2020 was our last victory against them.
Round 22, 2016 was our last victory against them at the MCG.
We have never played them on a Friday night at the MCG.
Our record against them at the MCG since 1980 is 6-2-14.

(now it is 7wins, 2 draws, and 14 losses)

I remember the 1980 draw as that was the first game Jezza took over as senior coach from ex-Richmond champ Mike Patterson. Curiously, I was also at the MCG a bit further back in 1978 on a stinking hot day when we drew with them in another high scoring contest as well.

So since 1978 our record against Richmond is 7 wins, 3 draws, and 14 losses. Not a terrible record at all really considering they have had Hawthorn-esque eras in those periods obviously separated by their Melbourn-esque 35 year + down period.
I’m not sure about his other stats but this one didn’t sound right.

Out of the last 8 quarters, Saints have had only 22 points kicked against them in 5 1/2 quarters of football.

Not bad.

We kicked 12.19 (91) to their 0.8 (8)
I remember the back line was impassible with Roberts , Guy and Guyatt and of course Verdun Howell
We couldn’t kick straight then either lol.

We were a very good team that year and it was before we had Baldock, Stewart and Dietrich.

Possibly, I didn't check - but I remember the draws (X 3) in 78, 80 and 2011, because I was at them. He posted some videos from wins in mid 2000s (two or three I think).

I was at the match in late 2016 when Paddy put on a football clinic on Rance before he broke his collarbone, and we had the American ruckman who played well in the side that day too.

Wins in 91, 92, 2004, 2006 and 2007, 2016 and last night (7).

Maybe we lost more than 14 against them in that time at the G. If anybody knows, I would be interested to find out.

In the paper today, they mentioned that it was Richmond's lowest score in a match since 1961, which was against us, as well as their lowest half time score since 2017 (against us) and their lowest three quarter time score since 2009 (also against us), so we've obviously fared well against them there since the early 1990s at least.

Goin back further, before our semi final against them last year, I saw B&W footage on TV of a Prelim Final in 1971 at the G where we beat them easily too.

That 2011 game was Daniel Archer’s only game.

He never played in a win, but he never played in a loss either.

You lot are remarkable for finding these stats…love it.
I was at ‘78 draw with Richmond too.
I seem to think I remembered Mick Malthouse playing for them, and I noticed the reverence the Richmond mob had for him in a way completely different to when he was with us.

1978 season is the weirdest ever. I think Moorabbin must have had a secret amphetamine lab in that donut caravan parked behind the animal enclosure. We’re our dental bills higher that year? Meth donoughts?

A couple of weeks after that Richmond game, we beat Melbourne and kicked 31 goals! They kicked 20 something. George Young a lazy 7 and Russell Greene 5!

From memory we belted Richmond in the middle of 2017 and the went on to win 3 of the next 4 premierships.

After Friday night's result I reckon we may have 'book-ended' their dynasty.

So long as we don't repeat history and get a hiding from Collingwood next Sunday. The week after blitzing Richmond in 2017 which was our best victory under AR, Essendon most unexpectedly beat us by ten goals!

I think there's a misconception that we have an advantage at Marvel. I'm not so sure.

I reckon our record at the MCG in recent years has been good. It would be interesting to compare our win loss percentage at the G versus Etihad/Marvel

Also...re Marvel; I know it's a great place to watch footy, but not too sure if playing on it long term is good on players feet (2 of our best have had foot issues)
Interesting post. Have been hypothesising about this in recent times.

One of the challenges for us ATM is the make up of our team isn’t really that suited to take advantage of Marvel Stadium.
The Doggies have that model figured out. Fast mids with sublime disposal, forwards with breakaway speed that clunk marks

Guys like Crouch, Dunstan, Ross, Bytel, Lonie, Dmac etc they tend to be a lot more suited to outside venues where the grunt counts a little more than polish.

It is interesting to marvel about Marvel and that era of mid late GT and Lyon. There was some in the media who tried to make out we had found ‘our home ground’ for a while there. Later of course, when Sydney would come down and smash us there and our dreadful compensation from the ground was exposed, it wasn’t so pretty. By this stage we were a bona fide welfare claim....1. We pay you subsidy, 2..You play Sunday twilight there, 3..You don’t complain, 4...Stadium will give you complimentary bucket of chips as payment for home games.

But I still dread the MCG...and I am so damage I also dread white jumpers and any version of an away strip. When I see the skinny stripes on the ‘white-backs’ I immediately think, ‘we are gone, this is gonna be ugly’’.

So I am so happy.

But haven’t we seen this before.. as pointed out about, that 2017 victory over Richmond was the beginning of the end.

And do you want a ‘cold shower moment’ (sorry, this is evil of me)....just think for a moment of the last? quarter, when we are delirious with delight and still waking up to the inevitable result...think, there was just ten brief seconds, when the water went cold...nasty cold, before thankfully, the heat came back...do you know what I speak of?

Membrey, no more that 35m out, regulation kick, no scoreboard pressure to speak of, easy angle for a righty, just shanks it through for a behind.

It might not be so easy to ignore next time.

But the silver lining is that Membrey missing, and Long moments later, goes some way from assuaging my guilt knowing Richmond might have been 10.2 instead of 2.10 or thinking about our incredible 12.2 against Port last year.

Coincidently, our last win at the MCG before thia was a 40 point win as well, against Melbourne.

Friday night saw the lowest score we have ever conceded at the MCG, surpassing our previous best of 3.13.31 vs University in 1912.
