Re: Ben King
I don't think gun FA players are going to take a pay cut, like they do with Geelong/Hawks/Richmond, to come play at St Kilda while we are down the bottom of the ladder just because we have both King boys. They might still come, but on top coin. Until we are on the verge of a GF (so finishing top 4) we're going to be paying overs.

Re: Ben King
If you could get Ben King
You’d do it in a heart beat!!!
Geelong went out and got Cameron, even though the had Hawkins
It’s made the hard to beat with two monsters in the fwd 50
And Rohan being a beneficiary

Re: Ben King
I totally agree, however Geelong's midfield is very very good. Makes the decision easier. This brings us to an age old question, what's more important...a quality key forward or a quality midfielder?

Yep, Geelong aren’t playing for the future, they’re playing for now.Ghost Like wrote: ↑Wed 23 Jun 2021 7:25pmI totally agree, however Geelong's midfield is very very good. Makes the decision easier. Also it helps when you’ve already got a gun midfield.

Re: Ben King
Geelong & West Coast much too my disgust as I detest both of them but have very solid administration & they have quality coaches & recruiters .They might be down for a year or 2 but bounce back very quickly . Both are seldom out of the finals & seem to have endless depth why can't we do the same .

Re: Ben King
Why have we been playing for the future for the best part of ten years?!
In the same time Geelong have barely missed the top 4
We went the rebuild model, they stayed relevant

Because as said above, unfortunately their club is run a lot better than ours.

Re: Ben King
This was a huge bugbear I had with Richo and it’s looking like Ratten may not have been the step up in this regard that was hoped for…
But as a club, our ability to decide which talent is worth persevering with and when to cut ties has been awful for a long time.
One can understand that there are a myriad of reasons why players may be selected to play beyond just their immediate form:
- rewarding form in VFL
- working up fitness
- developing
- rewarding hard work on the track
- good leadership
- specific role
- well liked by team mates or gets the best out of others
Etc etc
Ultimately however, coaches live and die by their ability to make the correct call on whether player A whilst not ready now needs game time because they’ll development into a top 22 player e.g. Bytel or player B based on performance could be in the top 22 but he isn’t the type of player that we want on the team for whatever reason (Carlisle or Savage)
Lonie or Kent are pbly the best examples of players that whilst they have a lot of good qualities, ultimately the writing has been on the wall for a while that they’re just not good enough. Dunstan’s another, Joyce, Dmac etc but they’ve all been around for so long

Re: Ben King
I don't understand your logic. Please explain!
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

Re: Ben King
Young midfielders, especially goal-kicking playmakers with footskills, should be our main focus.
The next Petracca, Bailey Smith, etc ...
We need to start putting the horse (midfield) before the cart (key forward).
We also need running, rebounding, attacking half back flankers - like a Houli, Saad, etc ... way ahead of Ben King.
Our recruiters need to wake up to themselves.

Re: Ben King
Are you saying we have no mids?
Crouch, Steele, Ross, Gresham, Hill, Clark, Jones, Billings, Byrnes, Bytel, Dunstan
Running backs
Sinclair, Webster, Paton, Coffield, Long.
I reckon it’s a misnomer to suggest those areas are completely lacking.

Re: Ben King
I think you are just after good players
Last time we overlooked a player for a certain type, we took McCartin over Petracca
There is no substitute for quality
If Ben King turns out to be as good as Lynch, Cameron or Kennedy he’d be more valuable than a mid. Key forwards don’t grow on trees

Re: Ben King
Get Ben King now
We have the next 2-3 years to get/develop midfielder.
If we turn Billings into an early FRDP we may get Bing and a top midfielder in this draft.

Re: Ben King
I agree with others there is no way Ben King should be our priority this year. We need elite midfielders and as many as we can pick up in a strong midfield draft. Following that pacy skilled small forwards & defenders.
King is going to cost 2 x 1st round picks and we cant afford to not go to the draft again this year. I doubt King even wants to leave yet with the $$$ he's getting at GCS?

Re: Ben King
Midfielders are more important than forwards.
Hawkins and Cameron had 1 goal between them last night because the Geelong midfield got beaten by a better Brisbane one.
We've got an A-grader in Steele, a B+ in Crouch, and after than a lot of GOP.
Throwing away 2 top 10 draft quality mids is a massive mistake IMO.

Re: Ben King
Bing will be at Gold Coast in 2022, no chance at all he will be playing anywhere else.
I don't know who has invested more in Bing, Gold Coast or Microsoft.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
