Even if we took Petracca he'd have been traded by now as a lazy half forward

Pairing up Ben Long with Lonie.

Let me remind you about a passage of play last night. It was just after Hunter Clark was knocked out

Adelaide had an inside 50 but didn’t score and we went coast to coast with some lovely kicking and Lonie was the beneficiary of a great kick from Max. The score at this stage is 5-5 to 0-0. We have a chance to put the foot on the throat

So Lonie is in the right forward pocket, he has lots of time and space so he opens up the angle (and he’s kicking it with his preferred left foot from basically 25-30m out and no one near him). And misses...

The Crows scored 2 goals after that and they brought life back into the contest

Lonie should never get another senior gig, no matter how many players we have injured

What about when Lonie was 15m out on his own and Long missed him and kicked a behind

I’m not sure if he was trying to pass or having a shot?

Long panicked deep in defence twice and coughed up goals

Lonie is also down on form and confidence, has a crack but things aren’t going right for him

I thought Lonie was undisciplined in some of his forward work last night, and just didn't do the crumbing role well. Like Butler, his tackles just don't stick either

Lonie's arrogance to try a left foot banana on the set shot was comical and shows no right foot skills at all .

Long cost 2 goals from fumbles . yes he is hard and can tackle but this isnt NRL its AFL.

Keep playing them with injuries no choice and hope for a couple good games whichmay get us a 4th round pick each to get some points to use in trades,

When Ben put himself into a position to rebound inside 50 he was trying to do the team thing and he didn’t hit the target. He should have been selfish and he probably would’ve kicked the goal, but he’s so down on confidence he didn’t back himself in. It was a pass that kept rolling and rolling and rolling for a point. He wasn’t trying to kick a bloody goal!!

Long played a bad game, but he wasn’t the worse. He wasn’t as bad as Coffield. Not as bad as Battle or Paul Hunter. He has a dip and he can at least stick a tackle. He wasn’t a passenger that goes missing like Butler or even Billings at times.

If the coach and the senior players and selection committee backed Ben like they back Brad Hill and if Ben had the opportunities that Hill had this year he’d be an improving player...not where he is now. Any player who gets spoon fed handballs like Hill will be made to look good.

When Hill was squibbing the footy, the coach was backing Brad Hill so...the scapegoat needed to be someone else...Enter Ben Long. He has a dip and he can at least stick a tackle...unlike a few other marshmallows in the team

Give Ben Long the opportunity to take a set shot or ..three ...and I bet you he’ll nail the goals...unlike Lonie

Lonie had time and space with 2 of his shots on the run and missed everything. His set shot from 30 out in the third quarter was disgusting for an AFL footballer. He tried a banana on his left and missed by 20 metres.

Lonie presented and at least got his hands on the footy. Doesn’t matter that he missed a few easy shots on goal.

Let’s award him a coaches vote and throw his hat in the ring for the Sainter of the round

Agree, stick Long in Lonie’s forward pocket and his manic attack will scare defenders and cause goals. Back him in. Lonie….don’t want to see him in the jumper again.

Lonie has the disadvantage of being 70kg playing in a really difficult position against players who are 10cm taller and 12 kg heavier. Tough gig. I like his attack on the ball and normally he is a much better finisher. My gripe is that he has no right foot at all and this is the thing that gets him into trouble more than anything else.

Long has some talent ( B grade) but lacks a cool head. I think it's something that can be fixed, but it's a 50/50 bet

I don't think Lonie would get picked up but Long might.

Lonie should have been delisted a few years ago. He's never going to be up to the standard. Long has the ability to be an ok player when confident and in form, but I'd like for us to aim higher than ok.

I'd keep Long as depth for now but wouldn't be planning for him to be in our best 22

3. ST KILDA

Tormented Saints fans would probably agree: The Saints are the most disappointing team of 2021.

They’ve lost in many wondrous ways this season, but Saturday night was Exhibit A for total despondency.

The Saints won’t go full Chuck Norris and hold an external review similar to Carlton, but a deepish dive into what’s gone wrong is required through the bye break. It could be as simple as conversion in front of goals, but that would be too simplistic.

Leadership, talent and mentality have all laid claim to St Kilda’s woes this season.

Something drastically is wrong at the Saints and this is an organisation issue and not just a team issue.

Remember, they beat the Dogs in the first final last year and this year are 13th with four wins and a percentage of 78.3.

The Dogs, meanwhile, are second with 10 wins and a percentage of 150. Mentality anyone?

4. WHILE WE’RE ON THE SAINTS

This is a bug bear. Why do players run in and push an opponent after a teammate has taken a mark or won a free kick against said opponent?

Jack Lonie does it too often. He did it on Saturday night after (I think) Mason Wood marked the ball in the first quarter.

Why do it? Lonie should worry about doing his job, like kicking goals, and not attempting banana goals from 45 degree angles.

He had nine kicks on Saturday night, three shots at goal for 0.2 and only two score involvements.

Lonie is a crafty forward, but his career, like others at the Saints, is at a crossroads.
