Re: Match Thread - Saints v Dogs
Look, to repeat what I have been saying here for what seems like a thousand years, and elsewhere even longer, the "secret" of getting a premiership team is to have 22 players who have the skills to kick, mark, handball and tackle. If they can also run, better still. These are the only players who should be recruited. Sometimes it's a fluke. Alas, for the Saints, we never get flukes. We get dud picks No 1. Some teams attract players who are more susceptible to training. We don't, simply because we don't have an extra $20 million to pay for trainers.
I'm sorry to say it, but no-one reading this is ever going to the Saints win a flag, unless we relocate somewhere and get an unbelievable deal. We need ten first picks - simple as that.

They were not worthy to wear the jumper.
They were not worthy of our support.
If ever an effort deserved harsh words it was that pathetic, insipid, gutless disgrace they served up tonight!

Ryder has been around for a season and change, yet has more heart for this club than nearly anyone else.
I'm not ashamed, I'm just disappointed.

Paddy Ryder and Jack Sinclair gave it a good shot.
Billings’s goal smother and goal was the highlight.
The rest is being carried in a dump truck to the Sunshine tip.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .....I hear the same thing over and over and over..."didn't try", "shouldn't wear the jumper"..... blah blah
There is a science to a great team in any code....Talented, Intelligent, and fierce players
It's very simple...we have a raft of duds left over from the most diabolical decade of recruiting in the Saints history
- Billings
- Sinclair
- Ross
- Battle
- Lonie
etc
I implore everyone to closely watch Billings play...he is ALWAYS second to the ball, and has no second effort AT ALL....he'll lose every 1 on 1, and when the ball scoots away, you will see him walking with his hands on his hips
We picked him over the now captain of the Bulldogs in Bontempelli
We picked a type 1 diabetic in McCartin instead of Petracca
This cannot be rectified by coaching, or glorious inspirational speeches in the rooms...or whimsical phrases like "Worthy of the jumper"....phrases like this DO NOT get to the root of the problem at all,,,WHICH IS THE LIST ITSELF!!!
The recruiting staff we have now, have an ENORMOUS task ahead of them....as they are trying to patch up this list with the likes of Butler, Frawley, Hill etc...but this bandaid won't hold...because there are basically no A grade young players in the team....Max King possibly one day...although at the moment he can't take a mark.
I would trade out the above mentioned players, and try to get some young talent moving forward

You want to guys to kick the ball to you Max.
They tried hard and did that last week.
But this week they won't even get the ball for you when all you do is kick behinds.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Dogs
Does St Kilda even have a chance.
With the second worst percentage it will take 13 wins to play finals.
That allows only 3 more losses.
I can count at least 4 loss certainties.
Wake me up at the start of next season.

Marcus Bontempelli 30.7 metres per disposal.
Ryan Byrnes 5.3 metres per disposal.
It helps if you hurt the opposition with your disposals

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Dogs
We are better than we showed tonight. But the harsh reality is that we go missing way too often, and have way too many players with poor skills. Our % reflects where the club is at. So while we are better than we showed tonight, we lack quality and have virtually no stars.
And we lack leaders. At present it seems no Marshall, means no St Kilda.
Now yes we have injuries, but most clubs do, and injuries are no excuse for over half the team not really trying.
Even Steele had an off game tonight. Congrats to Sinclair, Ryder and the young Byrnes who missed the memo to give no effort and waive the white flag
Another simple indicator is to ask yourself what players would fans from other clubs want from our list. The answer is stark. Pretty much Marshall and Steele and probably King based on his potential are the only players that other clubs may lust after.
Grim is our immediate future and grim for the next few seasons at least. In terms of young talent do we now have just about the poorest group of young players of any club. Hawks are probably worse, along with North, but I think most other clubs shade us.
Clark and Coffield have stagnated. Long lost the plot. Carlisle seemingly gone. Ryder good, but father time means on a year or two at most left. Frawley a stop gap. Hannas cannot get on the park. Geary not long.
Gresh and Paton back next year, but that is not enough. Especially as we do not have a strong draft hand, only poor choices in our Academy no father sons and it is slim pickings at Sandy.
McKernan, Wood and Hunter while admittedly all pick up as depth are not even that and will not be at the club next year. Or at least they should not be.
That all means that improvement has to come from within, and that is of great concern as we are very thin for young talent..

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Dogs
Very unfair to compare the pair. Byrnes at only 5 games at least put in effort and tried his best. Three quarters of his team mates cannot lay claim to that.
AFL today more than every is a team game, and when most of your team just are not doing all the team things then you get slaughtered like we did today.

Luckily I missed 99% of the game and wont watch it, I feel sorry for those who pay to go and experience such rubbish.
The Saints are now certified unwatchable.
Considering the expectations pre season we have been duped . Membership will take a hit next year surely......yes ...the sky has fallen.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Dogs
I think we can all wear one bad flogging in a season, but we seeing too much of it now. These are games where your best and most experienced players should be stepping up, but they basically made sure they didn't get their jumpers dirty. Sinclair and Byrnes can hold their heads up though, but as our midfield got absolutely thrashed, then we can't say any other of our mids deserve a mention, including the captain.

Re: Match Thread - Saints v Dogs
Steele excluded (as he and Marshall are our only A graders), there was no excuse last night for the rest. We have some players on our list that still look like and play like boys against men. Please watch closely. Contested ball wins are few and far between when the opposition come to play. Too many of our players are physically not up to it disappointingly. That and our failed recruiting is contributing in a long way to our embarrassing predicament.

When I read that I thought you were going to lay it at the feet of our experienced mids, our mature backs, not at the feet of King & Butler.
Would you really drop King before Lonie B.M.?
