Is there such a position???

Nothing to do with yips.
If your technique is flawed it is not the yips it is flawed technique.
Watch how Higgins kicks.
Put the ball on your bot watch the ball ALL the way to your boot.
Stop looking at the goals while you are kicking, do that just before you release the ball.
Watch the ball ALL the way to your boot.
Take him to the centre of the ground or remove the goal posts to get him to practice kicking straight.

King was a beautiful kick when he first arrived, now he seems to lean back on it or stab at it.ace wrote: ↑Fri 14 May 2021 11:53pm Nothing to do with yips.

Not the yips? These guys on an AFL list are elite. The best 800 odd footballers in the country. And they can’t kick straight over 30 metres!

Back him in
He will be fine
It’s between ears not technique
I can recall when Riewoldt was really battling with poor set shot kicking...he worked through it
I d just like to ease off the “he’s the messiah” rubbish and let him develop

I agree. His confidence is shot. A turn in the backline will do him the world of good and add another string to his bow.

I agree. Keep him in the forward line and back him in.
Not sure though if it is all between the ears. It can become a psychological problem, but often there are technical faults that stand in the way. Such as thinking target and remembering to KICK THROUGH the ball.

Re: Max King to CHB
I respect you’re an amateur football warrior of substantial self repute but I’m just gonna go with Ratts view on this one.....he’s played a tad more and I suspect knows a bit more than you might ..(certainly not after the fact you’ve got him covered there..)
Max King dominated an excellent defensive unit tonight, took 10 marks 4 contested and yup didn’t finish off his hard work but he will and when he does he’s easily BOG
21 played 23 games but crack on with the cheap shots from the cheap seats !!

You read others say at training his kicking is not an issuebigcarl wrote: ↑Sat 15 May 2021 1:09amI agree. Keep him in the forward line and back him in.

This is about a kid whose being asked to be no 1 guy from day 1 and dominate while he’s there... the ask is enormous the expectations huge
He needs to continue to be out in pressure situations and over time he’ll learn to handle them better and come out a battle hardened forward (with a body to support him)
Club needs to get fully behind him
Let him know he isn’t expected to be N Riewoldt just yet....just look at how Beverage is resisting player their top draft pick forward ???? Why? He knows they can be crushed really quickly by too much hype and expectation
I’d like Max to play higher on occasion....I think he’s excellent for that down the line link up kick ...take the pressure of him a tad and mix it up with time in front of goals
FWIW Tim Membreys got less excuses for some of his kicking and marking tonight for a senior player...
But alas people will pile on a 21 year old kid cause he doesn’t kick 5 and take 30 grabs... odd

Re: Max King to CHB
Didn't Hawkins kick 1 - 5 early this year. It happens, even to seasoned pros. You can see he is trying his heart out. All will be well. Just not tonight, unfortunately for our finals aspirations/perspirations. Certainly Max won't miss or kick many goals from that mythical CHB position, but I guess we have a ready made forward to replace Max... could you remind me who that is please.

Re: Max King to CHB
I see golfers every week make everything on the practice green and, when it counts, miss everything on the course. Usually because under pressure they stab at the ball. Decelerate at impact. But it can be for other reasons. Their technique doesn’t stand up to pressure.Teflon wrote: ↑Sat 15 May 2021 1:26amYou read others say at training his kicking is not an issuebigcarl wrote: ↑Sat 15 May 2021 1:09amI agree. That is why I wouldn’t rule out a mechanical fix for yips of any sort.
But as to your other points, I agree fully. He’s a very talented kid and needs the full backing of the club.
As a forward, not as a chb

Contested marks for the season:
21: Gawn
20: McKay, Naughton
19: Aliir, Allen, Dixon
18: M King
17: Lever, Membrey (extra game), Taberner, Walker
King is at least 2 years younger than anyone else in that list.

Re: Max King to CHB
Hos technique is aweful.
He needs a process. He hasn't got it.
Lloyd had a very obvious one
Plugger had a one
Tennis players have them.
Most elite sports players have them.
He doesn't and it shows.
He needs to get into to ' the zone'
He is at sea at the moment. Unless he finds a way to paddle he will be lost. It will start to play on his game. And ultimately defeat it.

Re: Max King to CHB
I reckon he will benefit in the long term by playing a handful of games in the VFL
Let's not assume that playing him in the firsts will automatically cure his issues.
The kid needs to see what it's like at the lower level. Make him realise he belongs. Sam Weideman has benefited greatly and so will Max
He should have been dropped 4 weeks ago
We want him to develop, but why does it have to be at the expense of the whole team
When he misses it saps the energy from some of our players and (more importantly) it just bloody boosts the spirits of our opposition

Re: Max King to CHB
He looks to me so anxious when he takes his shots that all he's probably thinking is "don't think too much, don't think too much". I don't think he can understand himself why what he used to do so easily isn't working. I agree totally with Teflon (and that's a first). I think it's a great pity we gave him the number 12 guernsey. Yes, it's an honour but oi, the pressure.repta wrote: ↑Sat 15 May 2021 2:07am Hos technique is aweful.

Re: Max King to CHB
Just pick something behind the goals and kick to it
He stabs soft little 5 irons that have no energy on the ball, because he is not accelerating through the ball, he can pull or push it.
Goal kicking is almost a closed skill like a golf shot, you need a clear picture in your brain of what you want to achieve (as opposed to what you don’t want!) a set routine and you must back your routine and NOT decelerate

Re: Max King to CHB
it's amazing how accurately he kicks to team mates - he puts unnecessary pressure on himself when kicking at goal.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 15 May 2021 12:12pm Just pick something behind the goals and kick to it

He just needs to kick it over the goal umpire's head - visualise him (the goal umpire) as a defender and imagine there's a team mate right behind the umpire waiting to take the mark.
Keep repeating this visualisation technique until it's second nature to him.
