This year? John McIntosh was injured in the second semi of 1971 and, ever since, players crucial to that elusive second flag have gone down at the worst moment - right up to Paddy Ryder in the last minute of the semi win last year. Arguably, you could even go back to Bill Stephenson and Jim Wallis in the early 60s. In fact, the only gap in a 60 year long run of injury bad luck was on that one day in September in 1966 - Darrel Baldock's knee "went" with his first shot for goal, but he was able to play out the game.

What more can Dunstan possibly do to merit a recall. If there is integrity in selection he is next cab off the like for like rank. If lonie gets the gig it would be, how shall we put it, disappointing in the extreme, in several ways.

Fingers and toes crossed that it's not as bad as first thought. He is an enormous loss, generally find when he plays well we play well.

Yes
Yes
No - i would think form states Dunstan, Highmore are in front on performance than Long.
No - Imbalance. Medium size forward in a forward line with King, Marshall, Membrey and Battle . Sorry time for either a Lonie or even Connolly to get a look in

"St Kilda are fearful injury-prone midfielder Zak Jones may be out until late in the season after he seriously hurt his quad at training on Wednesday.

Jones, who has suffered a raft of soft tissue injuries since arriving at Moorabbin, limped off the track and was sent for scans.

While the club is yet to confirm a prognosis, sources close to the situation feared Jones would be out for months, not weeks, with quad tendon damage.

Jones could require surgery, which would sideline him until late July or August. He had a delayed start to the 2021 season with a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, St Kilda coach Brett Ratten says James Frawley is squarely in the mix to make his Saints debut on Friday night in a bid to help curb Geelong’s frightening tall forward combination.

Frawley, 32, was picked up by St Kilda at the end of last year after coming out of retirement but the former Melbourne and Hawthorn defender’s start to the season was delayed after a major hamstring injury in the pre-season win over Carlton.

But Frawley, the nephew of late St Kilda great Danny Frawley, got through a VFL match 11 days ago and despite Sandringham having a bye last weekend, the Saints are mulling whether the Hawks premiership player has done enough to be thrown to the wolves against the Cats at Marvel Stadium.

Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron and Gary Rohan combined for 15 goals in Geelong’s win over Richmond last Friday night, upping the urgency for the Saints to bolster a backline featuring talls Dougal Howard and Callum Wilkie. Irishman Darragh Joyce has played in recent weeks but looms as the man to make way for Frawley.

“He’ll be pretty close. We’ll work that out this afternoon but he’s done everything right so he’ll be in the selection chat,” Ratten said of Frawley’s possible selection after training at Moorabbin on Wednesday.

“[Geelong’s tall forwards are] all in good form, and who do you go to? We got ‘Chip’ in to play on big forwards and to be part of our backline, so if we think he’s ready to go we’ll pick him, we just have to tick that off with the high-performance boys and see where that sits.

“There’s no bigger test, is there. The Cats in great form, just beaten the Tigers, up and about, and if you’re probably asking Scotty [Chris Scott] what does he want from his team, to have their key forwards kick 15 goals between three of them, that’s probably what he’s after.

“They’re in good form and we’ll have some challenges and we’ll get to see where we’re at.”

Jack Billings and Rowan Marshall remained on limited training duties because of their respective foot issues but Ratten said both would be right to go against the Cats.

Midfielder and dual best and fairest Seb Ross is also set to return after missing St Kilda’s win over Gold Coast on Saturday after wife Marnie gave birth to twins."

That was the article yesterday. Not reported anywhere else yet. I guess no official word from the club but not on AFL website or Hun.

Zac must be crushed at the moment. Hope diagnosis is good and he can rehab asap. Without his pace Zac really comes back to the field as a rated player. Kicking so so, marking overhead: can't remember one. So hopefully no long long term effects.

In future when recruiting from the Swans we will have to have a full disclosure of the potential for disastrous physical consequences based on history. And how about splitting player cap money into those that can play in foreseeable future and those that can't. The can't amount offsets the can so injuries don't have a ruinous effect on the budget. AFL to underwrite the can't cap and an enforced retirement process put in place.

Wow we must have upset the footy karma gods in a previous life - cant take a trick.

We dont have a long injury list but the players are all best 22 players -

Gresham, Paton, Geary, Hannebrey & now Jones. All to cap off starting the season without our two ruckman.

It's not luck! This is a non contact soft tissue injury at training...the fitness dept has been horrible this pre season and season. I don't know if it's under resourced, but our players haven't been well managed at all. Below expectation for an elite high performing organisation

Yet

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Although Richmond seem to have been impacted by injury more than most clubs and they are one of the best resoucrced clubs in the AFL.

LAzar Vidovic and Spider Everitt injuries cost us 1997.
Plus Smith.
And IIRC didn’t we lose Goddard early in the 04 prelim and lost Kosi, Fisher and some others late in 05. Peckett went down with a hammy in the qualifying final in Adelaide and was in great form
