"St Kilda are fearful injury-prone midfielder Zak Jones may be out until late in the season after he seriously hurt his quad at training on Wednesday.

Jones, who has suffered a raft of soft tissue injuries since arriving at Moorabbin, limped off the track and was sent for scans.

While the club is yet to confirm a prognosis, sources close to the situation feared Jones would be out for months, not weeks, with quad tendon damage.

Jones could require surgery, which would sideline him until late July or August. He had a delayed start to the 2021 season with a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, St Kilda coach Brett Ratten says James Frawley is squarely in the mix to make his Saints debut on Friday night in a bid to help curb Geelong’s frightening tall forward combination.

But Frawley, the nephew of late St Kilda great Danny Frawley, got through a VFL match 11 days ago and despite Sandringham having a bye last weekend, the Saints are mulling whether the Hawks premiership player has done enough to be thrown to the wolves against the Cats at Marvel Stadium.

Tom Hawkins, Jeremy Cameron and Gary Rohan combined for 15 goals in Geelong’s win over Richmond last Friday night, upping the urgency for the Saints to bolster a backline featuring talls Dougal Howard and Callum Wilkie. Irishman Darragh Joyce has played in recent weeks but looms as the man to make way for Frawley.

“He’ll be pretty close. We’ll work that out this afternoon but he’s done everything right so he’ll be in the selection chat,” Ratten said of Frawley’s possible selection after training at Moorabbin on Wednesday.

“[Geelong’s tall forwards are] all in good form, and who do you go to? We got ‘Chip’ in to play on big forwards and to be part of our backline, so if we think he’s ready to go we’ll pick him, we just have to tick that off with the high-performance boys and see where that sits.

“There’s no bigger test, is there. The Cats in great form, just beaten the Tigers, up and about, and if you’re probably asking Scotty [Chris Scott] what does he want from his team, to have their key forwards kick 15 goals between three of them, that’s probably what he’s after.

Zac must be crushed at the moment. Hope diagnosis is good and he can rehab asap. Without his pace Zac really comes back to the field as a rated player. Kicking so so, marking overhead: can't remember one. So hopefully no long long term effects.

In future when recruiting from the Swans we will have to have a full disclosure of the potential for disastrous physical consequences based on history. And how about splitting player cap money into those that can play in foreseeable future and those that can't. The can't amount offsets the can so injuries don't have a ruinous effect on the budget. AFL to underwrite the can't cap and an enforced retirement process put in place.

It's not luck! This is a non contact soft tissue injury at training...the fitness dept has been horrible this pre season and season. I don't know if it's under resourced, but our players haven't been well managed at all. Below expectation for an elite high performing organisation

It's not luck! This is a non contact soft tissue injury at training...the fitness dept has been horrible this pre season and season. I don't know if it's under resourced, but our players haven't been well managed at all. Below expectation for an elite high performing organisation

Although Richmond seem to have been impacted by injury more than most clubs and they are one of the best resoucrced clubs in the AFL.
