Roma is having plantar fascia issues, and it's not good to push him too hard until it's resolved. Remember Luke Ball and osteitis pubis?

Ryder isn't young, we don't know how long he has left.
The Paul Hunter/Shaun McKernan experiment hasn't worked.

We need a decent back-up ruck who can at least compete, giving Roma time to rest in the F50.
We need the right type of midfielder and not another plodder. Wishlist: Shai Bolton type, please. We do have Gresham to come back.

We also need a defender that can play on the monsters which will free up Howard a bit more. Wish list: Sam Collins

Once Ryder goes, we need an experienced ruck to replace him. I was thinking either Todd Goldstein or Ben McEvoy, but I think they are too old. We also need an emerging ruck.

I may be wrong, but wasn’t it a case of, give him a chance, let’s see how he goes after injury rehab. Turns out he is slower than preinjury and the game speeds up. So thanks !

I thought his performance warranted more game time then he got...
He was certainly better than a number of others that were persevered with at the time. Remember being quite frustrated by this at the time

I agree but we have at least 4 list positions to fill. A ruckman is a must get, but there are no ready to play ruckman out there, we will have to take a kid and develop him. I also believe you can never have enough quality mids on your list! As an example have a look at Sandringham, we have Dunstan playing mids and that's it - the cupboard is bare.

Our list has a number of needs a big key defender & possibly another key forward but are they out there? I dont care if we take Darby Hipwell or another young midfielder, but Freeman or Lentini would add more class and depth to our list. Remember good mids can always play a variety of roles.

The mid season draft is our chance to fill some much needed list holes. Unlike the national draft not all teams will have a pick and some will only have one. Granted the talent pool will be smaller, but I will be filthy on the club if they cant identify and take at least 3 players at the draft.

I'm a confirmed layman where footy is concerned, but Curly your footy knowledge is about as extensive as Freeman's AFL career to date. You just don't understand the game.

How did Beames go in his return to Collingwood?

:D 8-)

Actually known as Jack.

From wikipedia

"Debuting in the VFL in 1988, he was recruited from Parkmore, Victoria to the St Kilda Football Club.[1] The red-headed Daniels, known as "Jack", was used in a number of defensive roles. In 1993 he debuted for the Sydney Swans, where he played until 1995. In 1996 he moved back to his original AFL team, the St Kilda Football Club. He was injured with a shoulder problem in 1997 and his final season of AFL was in 1998. Daniels played 173 AFL games in total.[1]"

Totally agree.

But good ruckman, especially AFL level ruckman, are extremely rare.

A ruckman who could just compete could be a liability elsewhere. Otherwise we would just give Longer a call.

I'm all for taking a rock on one, but my expectations on finding a keeper are low. Really low.

Think the only chance of a good ruckman is hitting up a recently retired one. Seeing if they were pushed out rather than went willingly.

So now you want a ridiculous scenario where Freeman hasn’t played AFL and a hypothetical of taking him in the draft.

Fact of the matter is Freeman couldn’t get his body right in 6 seasons in the big time and now that he’s strung a few decent games together for Frankston you think he’s worth drafting. Playing at Frankston means his body is up to the rigor and speed of AFL?

You don’t think we have drafted enough mature duds and injury riddled players like Hannebery. You want another McKernan, Wood, Hunter, Frawley, Hannebery or get some young talent to develop?

You need to learn about developing young talent Curly, you just don’t understand the game.

He’s not a development player so he’ll basically have to be ready to go. He sounds like he’s lost his speed and he is now an accumulator but we have Steele, Crouch and Ross for that and he would be stealing possessions off them.

We need a mid who can go forward and kick goals.

Pass.

Which is why this mid year draft is unique, we have the opportunity to identify a ruck & a ruck / forward to develop them. None of these 19 & 20 year olds got to play last year.

I'm quite sure the likes of Gawn, Cox & Sandilands were 19 year olds once.

& yes, I know, so were Hunter, Longer, Rix & Brookes.
