Intrigued about Heater.

And what happened..why he faded so quickly.

IMO..didn’t dig deep enough into the ‘99 and ‘00 seasons...I wanted to know what was happening with him. He did say the game changed to a running game. I.e. I think he meant that forwards had to bolt down into defense to help with kick outs etc.

But I wonder if there wasn’t some things going on the Timmy Watson that didn’t suit him?

He mentioned being pals with Pickey too. Perhaps once’s Alves went, so did restraint.

Funny, he seemed too mild and measured, played a pretty straight bat. Just sixty games, something had to be up.

He was a great kick. One of the best set shot kicks I have seen at the Saints. Would hardly chase though.

I saw him at a game in the early 2000s. He was dressed like he was either going out later or coming from a club.

He almost won us a flag just needed to put the ball in hands more often unfortunately we didn't I was at the game & our centre clearances didn't do him any favours but he was a revelation in 1997 only Tony Lockett in my time was better at a set shot on goal & then he never seemed as focussed in 1998 & pretty much faded into the sunset

Too well..

And in an understated and unpretentious way. Completely hid the party boy in him, and was matter of fact about having played just 60 games - when he should have been a 200 gamer! It shows me how easily i can be fooled..I don't mean he was sneaky or anything disingenuous, but it just shows how ho-hum people can chat away, as they steer the ship away from the iceberg!

Something that gives the audience a clue about what was going on...why a player of his talent made such a steady and consistent and deliberate effort in the structure of his career..he made some big choices, going to WA etc., and coming back to Vic..even playing on in Tassie. His career was much longer than it looks from the 60 game stat.

He spoke of Peter Sumich being the No. 1 dog and all that, suggesting that he, himself wouldn't have had a fair crack. But he'd kicked a few goals in the last games of that season and Sumich was cooked. Matter of fact, Sumich finished up entirely in '97. Heatley obvioulsy knew this..but he checked out anyway.

So something else was going on. what I am trying to say, is that he said stuff, like 'Stan Alves' great bloke bla bla...so he had already decided to go 100% completely vanilla in the interview. I would have like to hear from him about balancing life as a professional footballer and as a human being with a taste for living on the edge a bit. And the conflict about 'being yourself' and having to forge relationships in a 'culture'. Havving a sense of humour whilst having to 'stay in the zone' ...all that kinda thing.


But I still enjoyed the interview. And thanks to you lot, I have some context now about the mystery of what was Jason Heatley.
