Coaches & the Gameplan

Post: # 1896713Post Devilhead »

What the hell was that game plan tonight of short kicking and holding up the ball?

Didn't seem like anyone ran past for the handball or marked the ball, wheeled and played on

The stagnation was putrid and it allowed the Tigers to reset time and time again

Also why didn't the coaches try to negate the outside positioning of the Tiger players at stoppages?

Every time our guys got sucked in to a gang tackle and bang ..... one or two quick handpasses and they were gooooooooone - some of their handpasses didn't even need to hit a target as long as it was out in space towards their goal they knew where it was going .... but .... we also knew where it was going and did nothing to stop it

Players had a poor game but our coaches were smashed

I have some thoughts

We were playing quick in the first quarter, and trying to play our slingshot game style
In doing so, turned it over in dangerous positions and couldn’t defend.
Therefore Turnovers
That cost every goal they scored
But, It did allow us to score

To counteract this in q2 (obviously instructed at q time)

Ball retention and slower movement, hitting up shorts
This invited pressure and we could get through their press and we still turned it over
But this time, couldn’t score

So

Last Quarter Ratten asked for a territory game
So we wen long down the line and as slow as wet week!

Still didn’t work as they set up so well behind the ball.

Therefore
In the first half effort was pretty equal (stats indicate this) but their system won over
Second half our effort dropped, so they had more effort combined with better system
This equals a 15 goal drubbing

Their system may have barely won over in the 1st half because we missed some easy shots at goal

We beat them in the H&A last year and weren't far off in the SF

Sydney beat them earlier this year as they moved it quickly abut also didn't turn it over

If the game plan did change at QT/HT then the coaches need a good whack .... given we were actually up at QT

Being in the crowd how great was it in the first to see us moving it quick and hitting king on the lead up. They even commented on the radio that the crowd was buzzing as we kicked it to him regardless of if he marked it.
Everyone knows Richmond want you to kick it wide so they can set up down the line and sling shot it back. What made us fall into the trap after quarter time? Why did we do nothing for three quarters to snap out of it?
Stuff the coaches the players are professional footballers. If I know by reading the paper that Richmond want teams to play slow, go wide and down the line then surely when they take a mark on the defensive 50 and stop they know it is giving Richmond time to set up.
The thing that had me steamed up in the last quarter was that even at ten goals down we didn’t look to pull the trigger and go fast and long. We didn’t once chance the kick to Carlisle standing in the middle on his own waving his arms.
Everyone is having a crack at Hill be he repeatedly leads into space to get the kick and it never comes.
The three quarter time speech was it let’s stem the bleeding and play keeping off? Or was it let’s show some pride, get the crowd going and have a crack at playing Saints footy? We took the defeated attitude and got smashed as a result and that is what hurts. It hurts even more knowing from the second half last week and the first quarter today what we are capable of.
Like all great sports movies it’s better to go down swinging for the bleachers than what we did.
Rant over - sorry for venting
