Reinventing Carlisle

Post: # 1895355Post Fugazi1966 »

Ruck-Forward ?

Ratten seems uncomfortable with Jake holding a key back post, but maybe he has changed his role.

Was good in ruck and is very dangerous when he heads to the f50.

Yeah maybe.

All I know for sure is that we play better with him in the team. Needs to stay in

Very selfless role tonight. Did whatever was required and played where the team needed him. Maybe he should be our second ruck until Paddy returns.

Carlisle had four good quarters tonight.
But gee the umps hate him.

A better swing man option than Battle on current form.
Battle has not been able to get going playing as a forward this year, and is not a ruck option. I thought he looked more comfortable in defence tonight than he has all year.
Hope Jake can hold a spot even when Paddy returns

As someone mentioned, he's just a bloody good footballer! Back, forward, ruck... I trust he'll get the job done.

Saw him close up tonight, first time for a long time. To state the obvious because I had forgotten, he is a big unit, well balanced, great kicking style and wonderful judge of a mark. Excellent footballer. Glad he is back in, churlish question is why was he not played earlier, simply looks a class above most on the field. There must have been fitness issues because he could have Dr Evil's charisma and still be played by 17 of the 18 coaches no questions asked.

He was very very good tonight as a swingman.

I am surprised because I did not see that coming.

Was deemed 'too slow' for the backline and didn't suit our 'high speed' game plan. That plan has obviously gone out the window.

Yep I agree definitely nullified Nic Nats influence when he was called upon which was very important to the end result IMO

Yeah what is all that about? He gets a lousy deal. Club should have a quiet word to the umpires boss about it

A very selfless and important contributor to the win tonight.

Needs to be in the team.

Remember that strange period when he was at the Dons and Bomber was coach, I think Bomber was trying to use him as a forward or swing type and Jake was having none of it, I think that was a big part of why he left the Dons, that and that other big issue might have also had something to do with his departure but the point of it, and as it was widely perceived and/or speculated on at the time was, Jake had spat the dummy because he was getting played out of his preferred backline role.

Interesting comment by Ratts in the presser, something about him being really open to playing a different role.

At 198cm, he absolutely should be in contention to be a relief ruckman and I thought his will to compete was as strong as I've seen in years.

He genuinely fought it out with Nic Nat in a way that meant we weren't dominated - and that's all you can ask.

Thought he wasn't the worst against the Bombers. I have been a critic but there was plenty to suggest he is in our best 22 if his body and heart are working together.

He won't win us matches, but he doesn't need to. He just has to compete and if he does, that's more than enough.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Yes, Jake Carlisle played arguably his best game for St Kilda since coming to the club in 2016 - from memory the club used pick 5 in the 2015 draft to pay for Carlisle, which the Bombers used to draft Darcy Parish who until this year has not done much.

I like the idea of keeping him in the team once Paddy Ryder is ready to play, as another tall to swing around the ground and ruck which releases Rowan Marshall to go forward more often, though I can't work out in lieu of which player - maybe sacrifice someone like Lonie and leave crumbing to Butler and Higgins - any suggestions??

If not back, he needs to present more around the ground. He is one of few that is tall and can take a grab, but generally never goes up or presents. If he can add this to his game, he could be very damaging.

I think being left out for so long and then being asked to play a team role rather than his favoured spot had the impact it should for the big man. He was so aggressive in the ruck last night and I was really impressed. Natanui looked a bit shell shocked by the 3rd quarter at times and I think it was because of how imposing our rotational ruck was.

Well done Jake.

Agree he would be stiff to lose his spot to Paddy after last nights game. You would think Paddy needs a game in the VFL to get going in any event.

Also agree on Battle we have found our permanent CHB. He is much more comfortable and suited to the backline at this stage. It was good coaching by Ratts to keep the faith and push him back to match up against Darling.

I agree but he went all bitchy sooky when Bombers played him Ruck Forward, one reason he asked to leave Essendon.
But maybe as he's aged he sees it was the role he was meant to play all along.
In 2013 he played solely fullback and had like 124 1%'s, zero hitouts, he was flying!
Bombers needed a forward ruck but I reckon modern coaches have to consider modern players.
I'm not being rude or judging....just pure facts, as a species humans have become increasingly fragile and susceptible to mental illness. We are shattered when we do not get what we want and need. Coaches must know what makes players mentally strong. Someone says I fecking hate the role you're giving me, and they play aggro, move them.

As a ruck forward
He kicked 27 goals in 19 games in 2014. He was pretty unhappy but they persisted in 2015, he kicked 14 goals in 17 injury interrupted games....he asked for a trade rumour has it mid-season 2015...to late to avoid getting doped up though.

Maybe as he has matured, stopped the lad partying, doping, got a family and aged....so he sees clearly how to match his physical ability with on field roles.
He can stay in defense, he fudges his back down there somehow and his back is really bad.
I posted 2 years ago how I saw him in Chadstone pushing a pram and he literally was hunched over and I reckon he needed the pram or he'd fall.

He sat down to get a cuppa and he had to put his hand on the table & chair to lower himself...that's a fecked up back bad....I know.

A mate's son with me was going to approach him
but I said, nah mate...never bother a famous person sporting movies singer etc outside the arena of their workplace....especially if they're with family. Plus he looks bigger in real life and his face said who wants to chat me up and get dead?
