Was living in Cairns then. Wasn’t onto tv naturally. Was out on the sauce with some mates including two brothers who followed the Scum. Rang my fam in Vic every 20 minutes ( on a real phone - no mobiles back then lol) to get a score update. Great night and really gave it to my Bagger mates at the end lol

I started a chant at 3/4 time of go home blues. And they did, in droves. f****** great to see.

LOL - I think I was just a couple of rows behind you
And then stuck in the car park for about an hour - but what an hour - lol!

Re: March 23rd 1996 , A Night we should all celebrate
We had been to Daylesford to drop off a horse to a trainer and decided to go to the game despite having to drive another 200 km home. A good thing we had the horse float because it was the easiest I ever found my car at Waverley Park after a game.
I have a video of the entire match somewhere, must dig it out. There is a bloke locally who can fix VCRs and I have two that can copy them to CDs..
My great memory of the game is the masterclass in Australian rules football delivered by Nicky Winmar. Many talk about his other great games; the marks he took, the goals he kicked but I reckon this was the most complete game he ever played. Total domination.

I got stuck in traffic on Wellington Rd. Had to walk 20 minutes to get to the ground. Missed the start but it was worth it.

I was on the outer wing.
Purchased the game on Video as soon as it was released and went to training and got Nicky Winner to sign the inside cover.
Still have it...

I was there.
Was in my 30's rather than 60's then!
25 years ago. Hard to believe! Kevin Johnson on the footy promo...
After the match I began to believe that we could win the 'day' flag in the Centenary year of 96.
By the way, which excited supporter of ours climbed the goal post after that Ansett Cup triumph?

A wonderful night.
I was meant to be in Sydney for work. Told them sorry - had to be at the game, and caught the first flight up on the Sunday morning. Could not believe how well we played. Like others, I lingered at the ground long after the presentation of the Cup, I was stuck forever in the car park after the game, got home ridiculously late and had about 3 hours sleep before heading to the airport. Wonderful wonderful memory.

Agreed this victory was a serious win at the time a shame the AFL industry doesn’t rate those Cups anymore. It was a serious hit out, 70,000 people both teams going for it. Blues reigning champs and we played incredibly well. Winmar was a stand out an absolute Jet that night probably the best game he ever played he was just perfection.
Incredible memory for those lucky enough to be there.

Best game of footy I've ever been to .
Why ?
To sit there at 3/4 time knowing we were going to win a trophy ( only ever saw us win spoons ) and just being able to enjoy every minute of the last quarter with no stress at all.
It was a great night.
But of course as a saints fan it doesn't take long for things to go tits up .
Was a bit peeved when lots of people got on the ground cos the presentation was ruined . And the driving home discussion of how we were a great chance to do the same in September.
Only for us to start the season poorly and basically never get going finishing just outside the eight .
Seriously if we'd played as good we did in that final during the home and away season , we could have given the finals a shake.

Yup, the loss of the preseason is a bit of a loss. Started as the Night Series I think. In any case, a big night and Mental as Anything were Mental as Anything.

A great night!
But, having been caught in a traffic snarl on the freeway coming from Narre Warren South with no apparent prospect of getting into the ground, I bailed and sped home to watch on TV.

What joy.
Shame the players didn't get to do a lap of honour.
But felt we were really going places.
And who better to thrash than thise despicable paperbaggers.
