Re: Paddy Ryder takes personal leave
When you are paying someone an extravagant salary and heaps of people are relying on you, I think they are entitled to expect a pound of flesh.
When ScoMo was in Hawaii with his family while the bushfires raged I don't remember many people saying "Good on ScoMo for putting his family first".
It was more "Where the hell is he", "If he doesn't want to be PM then F off".

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Remember
It’s a game to us
But to the players it’s a career, they get paid huge money to work in an industry they have chosen that comes with some sacrifices
I don’t have an issue with it, but do question the timing?
He got injured last season, had surgery then time off to recuperate, why didn’t he return home at some stage between oct and February??
Interstate borders have been open for ages

Re: Paddy Ryder takes personal leave
Why didn’t he delay his surgery or push back his recovery?
Why did he choose to be struggling mentally a week or two out from the start of the season?
Why did he not have a plan at the end of last year that took into account when each State was going to shut its borders and when each state including Victoria was going to have new cases of the UK Covid strain and the South African strain?
Paddy is so inconsiderate that he should be sacked immediately
Why did he get injured last year? He bloody cost us a spot in the Grand Final too

Not so, and in particular with WA. And mostly even if you could get in to WA there was a 14 day quarantine on arrival which would adversely affect his fitness.

Re: Paddy Ryder takes personal leave
Not WA borders B.M - they have been up and down like a bride’s nightie.
WA weren’t open to any person from Victoria until about 15 December.
Then Premier’s popularity had plummeted from 93% approval rating to a 89%.! Main reason, WA people wanted to see their grandmas & grandpas for Christmas. So he strategically opened the borders again about 12 days before Christmas, approval rating got back into the 90’s. Then germy Victoria had another tiny weeny local outbreak of COVID and the WA borders were instantly closed a couple of days before Christmas. Worse thing was, anyone who had come into WA on 21 December or after had to be placed in 2 weeks quarantine, at a hotel at their own expense. Or, if they had gone to stay with their family or friends in WA from 21 Dec. That whole group of people any Victorians were staying with, also had to go into home isolation for2 weeks.
So the poor buggers from Victoria that came to WA for Christmas had to spend 2 weeks in lockdown. Couldn’t travel or go see any other family or friends. What a waste of a holiday time, and spoilt Christmas for many a local.
I can’t recall the exact dates in Jan when Victoria was cleared of any more community outbreaks....... but it wasn’t until 28 days after that date, that our strong leader decided he might consider letting Victorians in again. Humans from every other state were allowed to come in previously, but not those germy Vics.
So for a couple of weeks in February Vics were allowed into WA. Alas, here in WA we then had our own little community outbreak. One security guard at a quarantine hotel became infected with the UK variant. And in a few days before his positive test came back, this young fellow travelled far & wide throughout our suburbs and down to places like Bunbury & Busselton. The amount of service stations he went to was astronomical And, hand on heart, he wasn’t doing his second job, Uber taxing (or whatever it’s called). So to save the WA population from having a second wave of COVID outbreak (even though we never had a first). The whole of Perth & it’s suburbs and a lot of the South West were placed into lockdown for 2 whole weeks. And, for the first time since this whole COVID thingy hit Australia, our fearless leader made it mandatory we wear masks.....the horror of it.
How you Victorians coped with masks for all those months, beggars belief. Seeing, we sandgropers were good little citizens and dutifully complied, our leader allowed us to stop wearing masks after a week. We were so grateful, and when asked in surveys who we would vote for in next election ( a month away)? Ofcourse we again pushed our Premier’s mob northward on the popularity polls. That approval rating had been slipping southward, because this frenzy over our one infected covid hotel guard hadn’t eventuated with anyone in the whole damn state being infected. Infact they couldn’t find any traces of COVID in our number two’s. You could safely drink our water. So we began to doubt our Premier and his overreaction, maybe this isolated case showed our security quarantine hotel guard/Uber driver wasn’t a super spreader!!
Nevertheless, the most upsetting thing B.M, your Dan, and all the other Premiers, except ‘good ole Glad” closed your borders to us Western Australians. Now that really wasn’t fair, we’ve only had one germy local transmission, since this whole thing started this time last year. I just think Dan & his merry band of Premiers, except ‘good ole Glad’, were just paying our fearless leader back (who told us soon to be voters, he wasn’t thinking about the election, just our health) from shutting their peoples from coming to our monied State and enjoying freedoms, they could only dream of in other states, especially Victorians.
Even Gil from the AFL, pulled the pin on us about that time. The Saints couldn’t come over here and play in the preseason match. We had one germy person within our borders, so Gil was going to also play hard ball with our Premier. Obviously Gil remembered how our Premier wasn’t very flexible with AFL matches being played in WA. Here was his chance to get back at the Premier, sorry you ex-pat Sainters, you cant get to see your team in a praccie match at Joondalup. Go and watch the Eagles and Dockers have a wrestle with each other for a couple of weeks. Or, why not go to a Sheffield Shield or 1 day game of cricket, could be more interesting ? But Gil disguised his get back at WA, he covered it by making all the States stay within their own boundaries for this round of preseason matches...... Smart lad is our Gil of the AFL
So B.M. contrary to what you say, you can see Paddy had a very limited window to be able to get into WA since he did his hammie, had his operation, had to have follow up appointments with his surgeon in Melbourne (who is in Melbourne not WA). And begin his rehab program, and training.
Paddy possibly was hoping to see his WA family when the Saints were coming to WA for the pre-season game. But Gil, our AFL Supremo put a stop to that.
If you listen to the wireless and read the local rag in WA you’d understand that there has been a fair amount of angst with WA bred players who play for interstate teams, most haven’t risked coming back home to visit family inWA during their off season, as the WA borders have been so unpredictable, especially if you come from Vic. Some of the parents of the WA lads who were recruited in the draft last year, travelled to other states to be with their boys over Christmas, because their clubs didn’t want the boys going home incase the boys got caught in Wa’s sudden lockouts & they would be in self isolation for 2 weeks and not be able to carry out the training programs mapped out for them, whilst back in their home State.
I think Paddy & the Saints have been able to identify, now is the best time for Paddy to get into WA, and he should be able to get back to Victoria, if & when he feels he wants to return. The bans on Victorians coming into WA has now been lifted.
One cue that the borders might not be closed very quickly to other States. Our Premier’s Mum & Dad (who come from NSW, (where ‘good ole Glad’ reigns supreme) have motored into WA this week to be with their Premier son for Election Day tomorrow. He hasn’t seen them for 15 months. They know he will possibly have the greatest election victory in Australian politics (if the polls are to believed, ha, ha) and he won’t have to play politics by closing WA borders on a whim, to make sure he has the ‘we/they’ voters still rusted on. Yep his mum & dad know they are safe to travel around WA in their caravan, safe in the knowledge WA borders will remain open and they won’t have to self-isolate in their caravan on the front lawn of their sons modest Rockingham home.
So hopefully Paddy when he’s good and ready after visiting family in 2 states, feels he wants to be back in the bosom of the Saints he’ll be back. We know we need him.

Re: Paddy Ryder takes personal leave
We need him in September, not March. He's 33.
It sucks that RoMa won't be back for the first month, but it gives McKernan a go.
We'll win the first one against the Giants anyway. Don't worry.
EFA.

That is an appalling attitude. Health and family should always come first. If you paid too much as a result than do better due diligence next time. Do not blame the bloke with the moral conviction to do what is right.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Fri 12 Mar 2021 3:45pm When you are paying someone an extravagant salary and heaps of people are relying on you, I think they are entitled to expect a pound of flesh.

Re: Paddy Ryder takes personal leave
If he is missing his family and in particular his children, he needs to be able to go and see them and reconnect.
He's 33, and at this stage we wouldn't expect Paddy to play every game. We are going to need him in September. As stated before it sucks that Marshall will probably miss the first month, but we have McKernan as insurance and it will give Hunter his chance.
It looks as though we'll also be missing Hannebury, Crouch, and Jones in the middle, and Geary, Frawley, and Paton in defense, but to be fair, Frawley was going to be insurance this season, and Gears is about 34 himself, so Carlisle slots in, and you'd hope he'd grasp the opportunity. We're going to miss Dylan, but he hasn't played much in the previous couple of seasons and it will give Webster a lifeline, which you'd hope he's seize.
Our improvement this season needs to come from those guys who have been around our club for years; Billings, Gresham, Sinclair, Membrey, Steele, etc. These guys are our new leaders.
I believe our fixture as it currently stands, with the Giants, Melbourne and Essendon, are all winnable with us covering injuries and absences, but we'd want a first choice ruckman and our star mids back for the Eagles match in round 4.
