He has personal family problems let’s leave it at that.
Quality person and player
I don't think anyone could think anything other than it must be a serious personal issue.
If you watched how Padddy played most of his first season you could tell he was proud to be in the RW&B and embraced his teammates with a big heart. The emotion he showed in the first final after doing his hammy was raw and real and his effort alone in that game was one of serious commitment to get our club the win and arguably he dragged his teammates over the line.
Let's hope Paddy and his family return strongly while footy takes a big back seat.
According to the coach , his kids are in Adelaide and his family in Perth and because of closed borders he hasn't seen them for over 12 months. Chill out .
I totally support the reasoning behind Paddy Ryder's decision to take some time out to see his children and old folks interstate, not having seen them for a year or longer, as explained by Brett Ratten last night.
My only concern about this is that the club's player welfare staff should have been aware of this and monitored the situation when pre-season training began, even encouraged Paddy to take these trips weeks or months ago, as I'm sure he doesn't like missing out on the start of the season and the pressure that would have played on his mind in recent weeks.

Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Borders were closed most of the time or people were in lockdown
That's true saynta, but I thought WA opened its borders to Victorians on Feb 20.

I know any negativity around this will be taboo but something is obviously going on a week from the start of the season ......This leaves us completely bereft of experience in the Ruck ......I love Paddy and what he did last year, and I have full respect for indigenous people and the needs of all people to connect with their families .....but this seems really strange timing .....
I have full respect for all people called Barry and the needs of Saints fans to connect with their brethren and fellow presumptuous Saints fans, but I think this was a really strange op.
If you are ignorant of all the circumstances and his personal feelings then it’s strange to question his decision or make assumptions that somehow being indigenous is one of the reasons that he is taking leave. Brett Ratten spoke last night on AFL 360. Not once did he mention the word indigenous.
Ratts was all class in the way he had empathy for Paddy and he highlighted how important it was to look after players’ mental health, especially considering St Kilda and the AFL have announced the inaugural Danny Frawley match. I have full confidence in our coach having the ability to get Paddy back to the club next month, if not sooner.

He's probably been tossing up whether to go home ever since,
His brother mentioned on Facebook that this was discussed with the club. A 2 week sit in a motel into WA and back into Victoria would not have been ideal, for a total of 6 weeks no training. He will be back, was always going and planned to be as fit as possible for his return.
What a great Saints man. Go well Paddy.
Restrictions on self isolation ease Thursday in WA.
At the end of the day it's pointless Paddy playing for us unless he's fully committed and his head is in the game. He would only be there in name only if we forced him to play, so he wouldn't be of much value. I'll be honest. I'm frustrated by this development but there's nothing anyone can do other than just get on with things. I reckon the club has done the right thing by backing him in and making him feel supported which means he's more likely to come back bursting to play well for the club. Research shows that employees will go above and beyond if they feel valued and respected in the workplace. We just need to cope these first few challenging rounds and make sure we pinch a couple of wins.
I have the utmost respect for Paddy and I'm sure he hasn't taken this decision without considering the impact it has on his team-mates, employer and St Kilda fans. Combined with Marshall's injury we have arguably the weakest Ruck division in the competition. Hope we can cobble together a win or two before they return.
Another example of the ongoing effects of Covid and the consequent lockdown. This is a very public case as Paddy is a high profile player.
Around the country, millions have been affected by isolation from family, loneliness, depression and anxiety. The strain on families has led to a significant increase in applications for divorce.
It's obvious Paddy was at some sort of breaking point. Whatever the core problem, he needs time and space to reconnect with his wife, kids and extended family. Anyone who's been separated from their kids for the periods of time mentioned would be in a permanent state of distress.
Let's hope he gets what he needs. I'm sure he'll be back. Let's hope sooner than later.
If alcohol can damage your short term memory, imagine what damage alcohol could do.
You know we might have seen the last of Paddy playing for us on the field of battle. That would be such a shame as I'd love the opportunity to cheer him once more.
34, just about done it all really, hamstrings being uncooperative, and his last game, the final against the Dogs was a herculean effort. If other stuff has come up he is rightly prioritising he has nothing to prove footy wise and it may become too hard to slot in without match fitness and a regular training program with the team, even if he wants to. Would be so disappointing but there you go.
Sam Alibakis might get fast tracked which could be a blessing in disguise in the seasons to come.
I have lit a candle to the patron Saint of Rowan Marshall's foot injury- St Healskwiklie (little known/obscure/medieval thought to be from Hirta, Outer Hebrides).
We are just lucky to have the big bloke in our ranks. He is a champion man and champion footballer. I remember when he started at the Bombers, then coach Sheedy declared that one day Paddy would be the premier ruckman in the competition! I’m not even sure that Paddy was playing in the ruck in those days, so I was rather bemused. But, Sheeds was on the money alright! I’ll bet the Tigers were relieved that they wouldn’t have to face the big guy in the finals last year after Paddy BOG’d the 1st semi!! A switched on operator is Mr Ryder, I hope he plays on for the next few years with us!

Can he stand on the East side of the WA & SA border and look at his family standing on the West side of the border.
I would like to make a political comment here but will refrain.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Like most Victorians Paddy was probably too scared to travel interstate in case a certain Premier wets his pants again and shuts the borders for indefinite periods leaving travellers stranded.

They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!
As has been mentioned, it's wonderful that the club is fully supporting him.
We can truly say it's a family club.
The following comparison could be tasteless and is out of context as it speaks to an entirely different era, but I think of the way the club may have allegedly treated dual prem-player from the Roos, Matthew Capuano, that we'd drafted, who needed time to be with a cancer-stricken parent. At one point, he was supposedly asked whether he was a nurse or a footy player.
It's a nasty rumour of the 'he said/she said' variety, that would offend any ITK who reads this, but this is just my musings, so apologies for this

I don't think that's too far fetched.
Just look at the out of touch reaction of some (including on here) to Carlisle leaving to be at the birth of his child last year.

Not what you were comparing but then again you do flip and flop.
