There's a nice photo of Cleveland St High School ... I attended it for a couple of years (year 9 and 10) - it was an all boys' school.
The teachers there sure knew how to wield the cane.
Painful memories.

Lived a stones throw from there on George St right off Cleveland for a couple of years in this place which was basically run by a slum lord.asiu wrote: ↑Thu 11 Feb 2021 8:27pm(We lived in the Surry Hills/Redfern area for a couple of years).

ps
henry played in our side
bat bowl catch field like a big cat
beyond amazing reflexes
could mark a footy better than me
(that pissed me)
could sing like a bird
play an axe
got in the ring
threw himself off a three story roof , naked ,
on camera , made the news on telly
woulda walked away
but he let himself be carried
never heard him neg a soul
a truely honourable man
caught in his own mare
bless ya mate
pps
i was better at chess
me 1 henry 100
Good times.
This was my father's belief
And this is also mine:
Let the corn be all one sheaf--
And the grapes be all one vine,
Ere our children's teeth are set on edge
By bitter bread and wine.

From all my long years of going to the footy at suburban grounds, no doubt Collingwood supporters were, and probably still are by a long streak, the most racist in taunts towards indigenous players and this is what its is all about. Eddie seemed more interested blowing his own trumpet rather than addressing the problem. Sorry mate, you can't use the feelgood thing to gloss over racism.

Re: Goodes riddance, Eddie gone!
I believe one if the problems in appreciating the hurt that racism and discrimination cause, is that so few white Australians have ever experienced it.
My wife first came across it in a department store in Paris on her first trip overseas. A snooty, jumped up little shop assistant mocked my wife's high school standard French and insulted and abused her. She sent us in our way without serving us. My wife was shattered.
As a child of German refugees, I was used to this type of treatment, so it didn't hit me as hard as it did her. My Mediterranean looks, didn't help me much as a kid, either. I got the usual "wog" "greaseball" taunts. When they found out I was German, I got "Kraut" "Hun" "Jew Killer" "" Bosch" etc. but Australia wasn't a racist society.
We experienced the same in Spain and Italy. It changed her perspective. For the first time in her life she'd been treated shabbily because of who, and what she was. Food for thought.
If you think things have changed drastically, pop down to your local elitist private school carpark and listen to the tone of the conversations. The very demographic Eddie and his mates inhabit. He's gone a long way from Broady. A very long way. Unfortunately.

It is very much rife in society no further away than this very forumThe Billings Method wrote: ↑Sat 13 Feb 2021 7:47pm I believe one if the problems in appreciating the hurt that racism and discrimination cause, is that so few white Australians have ever experienced it.

Most shocking hate filled racial stuff I’ve encountered have occurred right here. Called out the behaviour and foolishly made the mistake of sharing my background... not only were they completely indignant at the suggestion that hating ppl based solely on markers relating to race/religion... they then followed me around attributing every opinion they didn’t like to that fact
That was years ago before the moderation became what it is today. Had a crack at me as late as last year about still carrying on about calling them out being worse then their behaviour.
It’s why I genuinely try to avoid getting into this type of stuff here anymore. Was really an opener about how ppl fail to recognise how a prejudice can drive a behaviour and how tenaciously they will stick to it. Got acquainted with the phrase “you and your type”.
