2021 Draft
From Matt Rendell:
"it is a cracking top 10 next year in the 2021 (draft)."
Whilst I hope we don't earn a top-10 pick through our ladder position, I hope our plans are to get a top-10 pick through trading. I think it is more important than landing a big fish through restricted free agency or trading players or picks for an older player.
We haven't had a top-10 pick in the last 2 years and I wouldn't want to go a third.

Re: 2021 Draft
Probably use our 1st Round pick and a player. Depending on how they go this year, Billings and Long would be possibilities and sadly Battle may be in that discussion too. Probably no currency in Lonie, Dunstan, Webster, Kent etc.

Re: 2021 Draft
Possibly an unpopular view but, as much as I like what we're building and now have very few deficiencies across most positions - we've been handed the most putrid draw for 2021. The back end of it is just horrendous.
So - we may very well play to the level we played last year and yet - not only miss the 8 but, quite conceivably finish say 9th or 10th. That would = a top 10 pick. And to be honest - as much as I want to win a flag like everyone else on here - if we had to slide a little to get a young gun in and then launch for 2022 - 2026 ... I could live with that.
I love looking at the blue sky of this group (longer quarters and games at Marvel which will suit Hill and King + Crouch and Higgins .. and Gresh back almost a new recruit) but, the fact remains that our draw severely hampers our chances of a top 4 H & A finish.

Re: 2021 Draft
The doomsayers were saying the same things at the end of 2008. Look what happened. Seriously, we've just taken a gigantic step forward on field, laying the foundations for a premiership tilt in the foreseeable future and already some are "planning" sideways moves.
Thank goodness we have an administration that is going after a flag, aggressively, and not dithering around a fear of success.

Re: 2021 Draft
I completely get that and like I said - I want to win a flag as much as the next person but, I'm also a realist. Our draw is horrendous. Absolutely fvcking laughably awful. The Billings Method wrote: ↑Wed 03 Feb 2021 2:48pm The doomsayers were saying the same things at the end of 2008. Look what happened. I'm not planning a sideways move but given what we have in front of us - would you be p!ssed if we played to the same (or even better level) than last year but missed finals simply because of our FIXture and hence got a great kid that could meaningfully propel us to having a decent crack thereafter?

Re: 2021 Draft
The draw is not what it seems. How do we know that the teams of last year will be as good again? You're even downgrading us, already. Who knows? Maybe missing Freo, Carlton and another bolter may help us. Maybe the top 8 from last year won't be as good. There's movement every year.
I understand your trepidation. It is the saints and we don't have a great record of backing up. I prefer to think 2020 was more like 2007, rather than 2021 will be like 1999.

Re: 2021 Draft
Haven’t we learned from giving away actual talent to get potential talent?!

Re: 2021 Draft
More and more I’m falling on the side that it’s better to trade away picks for players that are 2-3 years in the system and are clearly worth persevering with.
It feels like unless you literally have a specific gem in mind really back the pick... the draft is too much of a lottery after the top few picks

Re: 2021 Draft
Someone suggest trading out talent to get into the draft
Point is
Why are you trading out talent?

Re: 2021 Draft
It used to drive me batty with old NN
Always harped on the philosophy of trading out our most promising players for picks to get more promising junior players to develop into potential guns to trade out and on and on it goes
Getting rid of good players for a chance to get good players never really made sense to me

Re: 2021 Draft
I don't think anyone can accurately predict the outcome of any matches. Trying to guess whether we'll win enough games or whether we'll win early in the year or later in the year is pointless Imo.
I know we can make finals and I know we can win finals because we just proved we have the coaching staff and the playing talent to do just that.
I think if we have some luck with injuries we can challenge. Drafting an 18 year old usually means you have to wait 4 years for the ultimate benefit. A Chris Judd only falls into your lap once in a lifetime...and I don't think we're gonna land a top 3 draft pick

Re: 2021 Draft
Teams have proven for years you dont have to have top 10 draft picks to pick up great players. Having said that it wouldnt surprise if Seb Ross doesnt look around at his FA options this year.,

Re: 2021 Draft
State Recruiting Manager Chris Toce told us he was expecting a pretty good draft class in 2021 just this week:

Re: 2021 Draft
We picked up Seb with Pick 25
He’s turned out to be a dual B&F winner
Made an AA top 40 squad and
Currently sits 2nd on our list for Brownlow votes accrued (behind Hannebery)
Not sure why we’d want to lose him for FA in FA

Re: 2021 Draft
With credentials like that surely he uis worth more than FA, but I agree, he is worth FA.

Re: 2021 Draft
Try not to dwell on the draw...if we’re good enough the draw is irrelevant & to go from a good team to a great team we have to fear no one and win anywhere as in ‘09.

Couldn't agree more with the tough draw and I think we will emulate the 10 win season of 2020 based on that draw.
It's a one step back and two steps forward situation for us over the next two years.
About 10th this year and at least 6th next year.
Hopefully top four in 2022.
its time to make a name for yourself like you've never made before!
