Which is the better King??

Post: # 1887115Post Sanctorum »

Following article on the Roar lines up Ben v Max:

https://www.theroar.com.au/2021/01/25/b ... is-better/

"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

He dropped a few regulation bread basket types without much pressure around him though. And his set shots were a bit suspect at times too. I hope the extra 5 kilos don't over load the leg joints too much either.

Should be a ripper though once he gets a few seasoms under his belt.

We'll be in a better position to judge, when they're both playing together in 2023. At the saints, btw.

I think the weight will fall off during the season proper. The muscle memory will remain but bulk falls off thoroughbreds extremely easily :D . But in all honesty bulk falls away during the season as it progresses with body types like Max's due to all the running. Footballers these days only do weights to buffer against body contact.

Which one has seniority? Max is the elder and the alpha. Top dog.

It will play out like the Waugh twins. Junior may have had even more talent, but was overshadowed by the deeds of his brother.

It’s probably in Ben’s interests that he plays for a different side lest his brother pulls rank on him.

I live part time on the Gold Coast and my youngest daughter goes to school up here and has a little friend who comes around home called "Frankie". My wife had invited a few people over including Frankies parents and I had met her mum a few times, but was surprised when her dad arrived and he is the GC Suns head coach.

I gave it a couple of hours as he didn't know I am Melbourne based, before I hit him with the how do you keep Ben King at Gold Coast. His response was obviously a standard line as he gets asked the question regularly but he stated Ben was not going anywhere and would be a long term player for the GCS and that the young group were extremely tight.

My take is the coach is very close with Ben and Ben's family. I heard a very similar tale from one of Ben's relatives so I'd be guessing he is going nowhere in the next 3 years minimum.

Max dropped some marks last year, probably a confidence thing

But he took 30 contested marks for the season

For a first year player that an effort!

I reckon this season it’ll be closer to 50 now that he’s had a taste

I don't think he'll come to St Kilda, would cost us too much.

Would be just as likely that Max goes up to the GC if they were that desperate to play together.

In an odd turn of events, he was better at contested marking in 2020 then at swallowing soda pops that hit his hands uncontested on the lead or after he beat his opponent and got into prime position

Hopefully it was just a nerves thing and he moves past it. Would have easily had another 15-20 if he caught the easy ones

One gets the impression with Maxy that he might be one of those players that really does a lot better when he goes on auto pilot and doesn’t need to think about it
Kind of like his set shots... you can see when he’s in the zone in his head... he’s a freakin dead eye Richard so to speak... but if he’s nervous... he’s quite erratic

Hopefully the club has identified this and has him linked with a sports psychologist type

Doubt if Max will ever leave the club, his family are life long Saints supporters and it was always the twins' ambition to play for St Kilda - he will also eventually captain the team and play 300+ games which will include at least 2 premierships plus 3 or 4 Coleman Medals!

Before you hit him with that question you ought to have hit him with party pies doughnuts and plenty of beers . Then you might have got a more truthful response.

He’s a big man, not height wise either but a very pleasant likable chap. He’s got calf muscles bigger than my quads.

His wife is very petite and extremely polite woman.

GC will be able to offer more money and will have higher draft picks to bargain with, for the foreseeable future at least.

Pretty simple.

Possible this has to do with opportunity. I have no idea about this, but I wonder if they were in the same number of contests to take a contested mark, or if the way we move the ball gave Max more opportunity than Ben. Don't know - I just think the stat of 30 v 15 is incomplete.

Specific to Max, he has a very, very long kick on him, but his mechanics aren't great. He started accurate from memory, but also missed some easy ones. The way he leans back without momentum is prone to hip/trunk rotation, encouraging to ball to die or fade off its trajectory. The difference between him kicking 2.3 and 4.1 is bigger than the 10 points is amounts to

Gold Coast will have to pay overs to keep the 25 first round picks they already have on their list. We on the other hand have traded in some mature age recruits from other clubs and long term our salary cap will open up.

Although I agree that it looks unlikely that we will attract Ben to St Kilda in the mid-term, in the long-term he may come to us via trades when he is in his late 20s.
And given that Ben has already trained at Moorabbin as a student and grew up barracking for St Kilda as a kid we are far more likely to see him pulling on a Saints jumper, than we are to seeing Max turning out for the Suns, a club he has no links to apart from his brother being drafted to play there.

I also think it is highly possible that the Suns may struggle to perform even as well as they did last year in 2021 given they played most of their matches in Queensland. They had optimal conditions for improvement last season given they played most of their matches in their home state and the shortened season allowing them to achieve a higher positive percentage on win/loss ratio last year than they would've had had their young team had to play an extra five games on tired legs. Younger teams tend to drop away in the back halves of seasons.

FWIW (and this is purely sophistry on my part) I reckon it's highly unlikely that Gold Coast continue as a club in it's current form should they not at least reach finals in the next five seasons, which is a very real, and some may argue even likely, possible scenario.
