Roberton considering retirement

Post: # 1886438Post kosifantutti »

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/01/12/ ... er-future/
St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton has stepped away from the club to consider his playing future.

The defender has battled heart issues across the last few seasons and is now contemplating retiring, according to AFL Media’s Callum Twomey.

Roberton sat out the 2019 season after collapsing during a game in 2018.

The Saints have released a statement on where things sit:

St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton is taking some time away from club responsibilities to consider his footballing future.

In consultation with his specialists and club medical team, and with full support of the club, Roberton will assess all available options over the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we request that the privacy of Dylan and his family is respected.

Roberton played one game in 2020, back in Round 1 against the Kangaroos.

It's an unfortunate outcome but not surprising.

He would have struggled to push into the team.

Unusual to make this call now?

After the draft and trade period

I dont think it would have changed much when we drafted Highmore, he is like for like. Depending on Robbos payout $$$ we will now be more inclined to take an extra player in the pre or mid season periods.

I wonder if there has been negative results, or he’s not felt well or some other bit of new information that’s brought the issue back up

He played in rd1 last year and the prospects of getting back into the top 22 haven’t changed much over 6 months...
Feels like something else would have prompted this decision. Maybe for example he’s been offered a good post footy opportunity and felt he couldn’t responsibly turn it down etc

Yes
I thought the same thing
Perhaps training hard after a long break has seen an issue arise

Strange time of the year for this call.

Purely speculation, but I wonder if Robbo is taking medication for his heart or his condition is not allowing him to reach the fitness standard he'd reached early in his career & that required to play at his peak?

What is beyond doubt is Robbo is a high quality person and the type of player you could see transitioning into an assistant coaching role.

Whatever happens we wish the very best to Robbo for his own health and young family.

A rational and sensible decision, he has a young family and would be wise to focus on life after football, he can look back on his footy career with considerable pride and feel sure he will do well in whatever field of endeavour he takes on!

If he retires it will be the right decision primarily for him & his family. He will be paid out, the Club will wear that cost as I've a feeling Dylan will transition into coaching, scouting or player welfare.

May open up two spots for a mid season dip at the best 19 year olds running around, after likely taking two in the pre season, i suspect.

Pure quality as a person, clubman and player. Good luck with the decision.

Sean Dempster and Sam Fisher both called time just prior to the pre-season.

If he does finish up, it’ll be 90 odd games for the Saints(I think he has a few boys too?)

Good player, very good 2017 and sounds like a ripper bloke

Good luck to him

No he wont just be paid out.

He cannot fulfill his contract. His payment would a negotiated amount at best.

Certainly wont be a rash decision, he has given plenty of time to getting right. He must be a bit sad right now, but he will make the best decision - just like he did with his wonderful forays from the last line of defence.

He might as well retire if they are not going to consider him for selection.

Should have come in for Carlisle against Richmond, but it seems they consider him a health risk (despite getting the all clear to play) or don’t rate him for other reasons.

Played the first match in 2020, a game St Kilda should never have lost but did

Paid the price with Dunstan for that loss

Had 8 disposals (Dunstan 20)

With a defence comprising Carlisle, Howard, Wilkie, Coffield, Clark, Long and Patton could not force his way back in and finished the season with just that 1 game on his CV

At 194cm, excellent off both left and right Roberton is a class act who has served St Kilda very well since returning from WA

We wish him well

If he does not return to the field he will be missed

Players of his caliber do not grow on trees

Does anyone know the rule about this?
If he retires due to a health issue, will he get paid out in full? In part? negotiate a new role at the club?
If he retires for health issues, will his 2021 salary be counted in our salary cap or does it open up a bunch of money?

our best defender since dempster. a real pity what has happened. an in form robbo continuing on from 2017 form would waltz into this team and we'd be all the better for it. all the best to him.

I have to imagine that there isn’t a hard and fast rule about what he gets paid... it will fall into that territory of who says he can’t play due to health: his specialist, the clubs medical, he’s played since the original incident, why now etc
One would think that end of the day, rather than really go through all of that... that they’ll negotiate an amount and hopefully come to an agreement where everyone is happy.

I know even less about SC but would have to think that whatever he’s paid ultimately counts toward the 2021 SC

Contracted figure is on the Salary cap. That doesnt change.

His pay out will be his pay out. IF there is even a pay out.

Might be absorbed into a coaching role for the year anyway.

He will still get paid, his role will just change.

Not sure how much we are spending in the soft cap

But surely the can’t include hi wage in the TPP and the soft cap
