Good side but need to include Geary. He will play because he is tough, versatile, experienced and our CAPTAIN.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 4:59am Disregarding the Crouch suspension, I think this is our senior and reserve squad

The starting 22 is the best we've had in a long, long time. Depth in most areas is okay but I'm sure we'll be bringing in more players as needs arise due to injury throughout the season. Can't see us making it through the year without picking up another rickman.

Would love to see him continue to be used as a defensive forward. With his pressure, leadership and popping up for 1 or 2 goals a game if we're lucky he could still be invaluable.Gershwin wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 9:05amGood side but need to include Geary. This was my father's belief

And the grapes be all one vine,
Ere our children's teeth are set on edge
By bitter bread and wine.

I'd say he doesn't get a spot because his skills are scrappy, his athleticism is heading downhill and our younger players have overtaken him. I've liked Gears over the journey but he's just about cooked.
Who would you exclude to bring in Geary?

Hannebery. Or injuries will open up spots. Just feel we need a ‘tough nut’ to lead by example and don’t think his skills are that bad.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 12:27pmI'd say he doesn't get a spot because his skills are scrappy, his athleticism is heading downhill and our younger players have overtaken him. Re: Round One team ...
Geary turns 33 in June......yes, he's tough and we are all in admiration of his determination, grit, and courage. He's a back flanker. The question is who would you rather have ball in hand? He has been superseded in that position by quicker and more skillful players. His role as defensive forward is useful against specific opponents, but he's not a lock for any role anymore. I see him as a 'horses for courses' player next year. No one should be guaranteed a game. If there is any doubt about him being of critical value every week, then Steele should be given the captaincy. I'd love to be confident that he would be highly valuable every week, but I just can't see it being that way.

But its at best 20-30% likely.
He's not ready to replace Ryder or anyone if we get in a pinch.
Go watch him practice.

Thank you - I believe you. Those really big fellows take longer to develop - 24 years old is very young for a ruckman at this elite level and that never changes over time.SAINT-LEE wrote: ↑Fri 11 Dec 2020 9:51pm You needn't listen to me, but I can say Ive talked to coaches, Ive watched Alabaskis, he has potential but as I said weeks ago the "dream" is that he comes on strong and rucks a full season in the vfl with late season emergency in seniors. There is a reason why sometimes a ruckman like, say Wow/Warren Jones sometimes dominated their opponent at 34 years old, rucking against a fit 26 year old. There is a reason why some our older Forum members, have absolutely no concerns about our new big Kingmeister, sometimes not clunking marks!

Totally agree - I absolutely LOVE him in this role. I find it really interesting (and perhaps paradoxical), how accurate he is in front of goals!roskilde wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 9:11amWould love to see him continue to be used as a defensive forward. Re: Round One team ...
I think defensive forward is the only role for Gears these days.
His ball movement is too stodgy coming out of defence.
Paton is a better lockdown on the smalls, is faster and a better user.
I think if he has a clear match up on their running half back, he plays, if not he makes way and develops the boys at Sandy

Re: Round One team ...
The other thing with Geary is the club would err if they promoted him as captain again this year. I think Ratts etc should pull him aside and politely ask him to pass the captaincy baton on this year.fugazi wrote: ↑Tue 15 Dec 2020 9:05am I think defensive forward is the only role for Gears these days.

Spot on re the first 22, although I would move the magnets around a bit ( eg Long to bench Clark to halfback etc ) , and I think for Sandy they might start Allison in a wing, but I reckon you are on the right track. I particularly agree with you that we need another rickman (sic). Professor Snape coming off the bench would be very handy !
