Young guns who can take the next step
From herald sun.com.au
"ST KILDA
JACK BYTEL
Can Jack Bytel become a regular starter at the Saints?
Consider the list of players 23 and under at St Kilda — Ben Long, Jade Gresham, Josh Battle, Ben Paton, Jack Higgins, Hunter Clark, Nick Coffield, Max King,
It’s some kind of impressive age demographic when you consider Dan Butler, Dougal Howard, Cal Wilkie and Jack Steele are yet to hit 25 (Steele hits that milestone on December 13).
But for all the headlines about Brad Crouch’s arrival, a kid who played only three games in his second season still has mighty wraps.
Jack Bytel was the No. 41 pick in the 2018 national draft, and while he might never be Hunter Clark or Max King, he is the kind of emerging prospect which will help generate the depth of talent to push for flags.
Tough in the clinches, he won five clearances in his 18 disposals on debut and while he only played three matches this must be his summer to make enough improvement to earmark a Round 1 role, as tough as this midfield will be to crack into."

Re: Young guns who can take the next step
Big wraps on JB Jr and he certainly has shown glimpses of real potential to become a very good midfielder.
As I've mentioned in other posts, the competition for midfield spots at St Kilda in 2021 is going to be fierce!

I think Paton will start to show his attacking flair in 2021 and show that he is on a level with his 2017 mates.

The 2 question marks I have on Bytel are his decision making and his lack of professionalism on the training track.

Young guns I want to see take the next step.
Max King. Hope he has honed his set-shot kicking technique over summer. All he is going to need to be the complete package.
Hunter Clark. He has earned a go in the midfield and I hope he is not relegated to HBF to make way for Crouch or Jones or anyone else.

You must have mis understood my post Fugazi. I did not pot anyone at all. All I said was that I have 2 question marks regarding Bytel's decision making and professionalism on the training track. If you think that is potting someone then I feel sorry for you.fugazi wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 11:23pmSo you're staying around and potting our young blokes now?SaintPelican66 wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 9:44pmWell my ITK knows otherwise.Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 12:15pmSteward66 a trainer at the club, says he is one of the best trainers on the list and is absolutely flying since coming back.saynta wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 12:05pmWhat utter crap.SaintPelican66 wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 11:39am The 2 question marks I have on Bytel are his decision making and his lack of professionalism on the training track.

Re: Young guns who can take the next step
What the hell does it mean when you accuse someone of 'lack of professionalism'? Of course you've potted him!
It's a baseless slur. The kid has been drafted ( and he's paid a decent salary for a young bloke) into a professional organisation in the most elite level of footy in the country and you claim he doesn't understand or is not willing to adhere to the standards required. Jack had an injury that required meticulous care to be able to achieve a level of fitness to play again. Did he accidently get there did he?
As far as his decision making is concerned, why would anyone pot a young guy who has played under 30 games? I reckon he did really well for such a novice. In any case, give them time to develop and give them the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Perfect example is the Coff with a high top ten finish in the best and fairest this year
I love it when tools write off blokes like they did with Coff before he even had a chance to get used to senior footy. The kid has hopefully taught the tools a lesson not to jump the gun too early

Re: Young guns who can take the next step
Yep, he's played three games after coming off a serious injury that had to be managed with real care. His training has been based around not over-working him too early. Plenty of guys have had quiet starts to their careers. Riewoldt only had a handful of touches in his first couple of games, as did Lenny Hayes, but Bytel had 18 touches and 5 clearances in his first game when we were spanked by Geelong. As for Bytel's decision making, I thought he did some clever things with his hands in high traffic situations. One thing I noticed was that he didn't fumble the ball below his knees, which suggests he has some composure. This year will be the first pre-season where he can put in the same work as the other guys. Let's see what he does after that.

Honestly Carl, I reckon it was 100% a case of first year nerves and therefore, just "The Yips". I think we'll all find that he's "just fine!", to quote Ronnie Van Zant.bigcarl wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 12:13pm Young guns I want to see take the next step.

Re: Young guns who can take the next step
Talented players ....creative players, in this era of hyper structure and management...how do they actually ‘burst out’ if they are held akin to camera s, statistics, structures, line coaches, performance targets, contract triggers, and good ol team discipline?
If Coffield will break out, I wonder, what does it take for a player to ‘break out’ of the mold given that the coaching regime had a designated role within an structure and that flamboyance is penalized if it goes awry, and especially for defenders.

Re: Young guns who can take the next step
I'm already bullish about our midflied so if the second coming of Robert Harvey can become best 22 then as Brian would say, WOWWEE.
I still shake my head at how quickly we have transformed the list. And the transformation all started at around the time Bytel joined the club and at that time we were not only in desperate need of quality midfielders, we were in desperate need of just quality players full stop.
Now have a look at the names Bytel has to push out to get a game. It's going to be extremely tough for him to break into this side. A great thing.
My guess is he will play round 1 and 2, then Crouch comes in. Then he will have a fight on his hands for the rest of the season to get a game. Not saying he wont, just that he is going to have to deliver on the hype in 2021.

Re: Young guns who can take the next step
Agree, my itk, my son who does not follow the Saints knows Bytel from his work at Calder in the strength and conditioning team and says the kid is professional in everything he does. The kid was co-captain of his team with great leadership skills and very good skills. As ive mentioned my son has been working with Calder for 5 years and has seen most of the draftees from Calder ( Balta, Scholl,Taylor, Riccardi, ) come through and from what he says and sees you can tell why these kids are drafted. Even our latest draftee Matthew Allison is the type of guy you want at your club simply on their want to become an AFL player. Unless you are involved personally you can't really make a judgment on players training, preparation and attitude.Vazelos wrote: ↑Tue 15 Dec 2020 10:51pmHave to agree with Saynta on this one that’s not the intel I have heard about Bytel..saynta wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 12:05pmWhat utter crap.SaintPelican66 wrote: ↑Sun 13 Dec 2020 11:39am The 2 question marks I have on Bytel are his decision making and his lack of professionalism on the training track.
