Re: Banger
Strikes me that Rob is the modern day Brian Royal - the guy that was supposedly anointed as 'next in line' by everyone in the industry and despite having a million interviews for Senior jobs ... never got past the final hurdle.
No shame as far as I'm concerned - some people are great Assistants and not suited (personality wise) to being the main man.

I’d like Banger to leave the filth come home and be Ratts understudy, But I fought he will because I think Ratts will be our coach for at least five years
He needs to wait for the next senior coach sacking...

i hope that's not it for Banger, how many times can he miss out before he gets overlooked completely.
How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?

Those greats of the era Buckley, Hird, Voss have all had a go at coaching but not Banger who was as good as any of them playing wise.

On that score I can't see Robert ever getting a senior job based on his inability to speak properly.
Collingwood big footy posters also don't rate him even as an assistant.
Haven't exactly seen the flags flying at any of the clubs he's been at!

Robert Harvey, his wife, his kids, his Mum and Dad, the rest of his family, the North Melbourne Football Club, the players of the North Melbourne Football Club, the supporters of the North Melbourne Football Club, the Collingwood Football Club, the players of the Collingwood Football Club, the supporters of the Collingwood Football Club, the St Kilda Football Club, the supporters of the St Kilda Football Club, anyone who played junior football with him, his friends, his ex-team mates, his teachers, his school mates, his neighbours, football journalists, and AFL watchers. That's all.
Nothing better than a good Dad Joke.

You can compare him to Figjam and Voss but not that f****** drug cheat Hird the turd. The Turd was never in the same league.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Fri 20 Nov 2020 10:50pm Those greats of the era Buckley, Hird, Voss have all had a go at coaching but not Banger who was as good as any of them playing wise.

What went on during Hird's coaching career should not diminish his playing achievements.
I reckon if you surveyed 100 or even 1000 neutral supporters as to who was the better player between Harvey and Hird , Robert would come a very distant second.
AS Saints supporters we may think/know this to be unfair but we are in the minority!

Re: Banger
In order to be an effective leader of any kind you need to be a good communicator....
An AFL senior coach needs to be an elite communicator these days, this attribute is the most important part of the job.
Communication is not Bangers strong suit...from what I understand he ticks all the other boxes.

Banger spoke well at the 2019 B&F in his tribute to Danny.
But public speaking doesn't come naturally.
PS As a player Banger was every bit as good as Hird!

Re: Banger
Extremely different players, Harvs the accumulator and workhorse with a deft touch. Hird the one with a touch of brilliance and who could turn a game within a few minutes. Anyone who doesn’t see the affect that Hird had on games can’t have been watching with any objectivity.saynta wrote: ↑Sat 21 Nov 2020 11:00amYou can compare him to Figjam and Voss but not that f****** drug cheat Hird the turd. Re: Banger
Another good experience for Banger - but I really dont think he has the tools to be a senior coach. There is no doubt he would have the football nous, but there is a lot more to being a senior coach these days.

Re: Banger
I agree about Hird but the Harvey you described sounds more like Diesel Williams. Harves was a running machine that was close to being untackleable, brilliant evasive skills with excellent vision. It was his ability to push to each contest that got him his disposals making him untaggable in his era. Very courageous, something Hird was as well.amusingname wrote: ↑Sat 21 Nov 2020 5:43pmExtremely different players, Harvs the accumulator and workhorse with a deft touch. Re: Banger
Banger had that six-week stint as a stand in coach for us after Ross Lyon did his Pablo Escabo tunnel escape to Fremantle.
Does anyone know how it was perceived at the time? Good, bad indifferent?
It was the basically just the horse racing season i suppose...but did he have a hand in anything?

Surely the best evasive player of all time.
It's something to be proud of.
Best fend-off player: Dusty Martin.
Best handballer: Diesel Williams.
Best field kick: Darren Jarman.
Best set-shot: Tony Lockett.

Re: Banger
Seriously? Hird may have been involved in flags and in more blockbuster games such as on ANZAC day, but overall Harvey has performed at a higher level for much longer than Jimmywhiskers3614 wrote: ↑Sat 21 Nov 2020 11:33amI think you're being a bit one eyed there saynta.saynta wrote: ↑Sat 21 Nov 2020 11:00amYou can compare him to Figjam and Voss but not that f****** drug cheat Hird the turd. Harves nearly played 400 games. Hird played only 253.
Harves won back to back Brownlows and was probably BOG twice as many times as Hird would have achieved in his career
Harves had 8 x All Australian honours. Hird had only 5
Harves represented his State 8 times and got man of the match - Ted Whitten medal 3 times.
Harves also has an MVP as voted by his peers.
When Jimmy had the collision incident on field (which caused facial injuries likened to being involved in a high speed car crash) he went to Shane Charters for ‘advice’. That’s enough for me to question his ‘efforts’ on field and question whether they are tainted

Lyin left after the last game that season (a finals loss to the swans) so no coaching as such by Banger (I don't think).shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 21 Nov 2020 9:24pm Banger had that six-week stint as a stand in coach for us after Ross Lyon did his Pablo Escabo tunnel escape to Fremantle.
