Re: The New List
I wonder how much those 4th rounders stand to go up with all the points picks disappearing this year. I can't imagine we plan on using many, if any, of them.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

Re: The New List
Can't they pay Joyce out for 2019 and delist him?
He and McKenzie seem the most expendable to me.
If they're not likely to play next year, does it matter whether we pay them because they're contracted to be on the list or we pay them not to be on the list?
(I hate this time of year)

Don’t know what it means for the salary cap but those two along with Kent to me are completely expendable
Would much rather keep Savage, Lonie, Phillips and Oscar

I don't know Joyce's circumstances but he must realise 2021 is his last year on the list.avid wrote: ↑Fri 13 Nov 2020 12:18am Can't they pay Joyce out for 2019 and delist him?

If he wants to go back to Ireland to live then agreeing to paying him out early may be good for both parties.
The payout would come from the 2020 cap so the club would need to have that room.

Thanks for that - easy to understand. Quite a few important players we need to resign in 2021.ace wrote: ↑Thu 12 Nov 2020 11:18pm Preceding numbers are NOT player jumper numbers they are for counting purposes only

Re: The New List
Last year Geelong delisted Lachie Henderson.
But when St Kilda recruited Ryan Abbott form Geelong's rookie list, Geelong used the rookie draft to turn Henderson into a rookie.
The thing is the player has to be delisted first, that's easy to do if a player is uncontracted and no other club moves to steal steal him.
But if the player is under contract he may not be so willing to accommodate the club.
The incentive for Daragh Joyce and Daniel McKenzie is that there is a remote chance another club will swoop saving their AFL dream.
But under those circumstances their rookie contract pay will fall to $85,000 plus $5,000 per match.
If they were rookied by St Kilda the club would honour their previous contract. (not so at Collingwood they have no honour)

Re: The New List
To the of my knowledge (which is just the same as the average punter) the following guys dont have contracts:
Clavarino
Marsh
Savage
Phillips
Plus Lonie who has an offer and Carlisle who has reportedly agreed.
Selecting only 1 draftee (unless we can trade up)
I'd be promoting Wilkie, offering Savage a 1 year contract, offering Clavarino a rookie spot, and then comparing Marsh & Philips to the delisted free agents and draftees.
I'd consider Chips, Daw & a few others.

Wilkie can remain on the rookie list with a contract fit for his real worth for 2021.footynut wrote: ↑Fri 13 Nov 2020 12:37pm To the of my knowledge (which is just the same as the average punter) the following guys dont have contracts:

He can play as if he were a senior.
We then formally promote him at the end of 2021 season.
Keeping as a rookie means we don't have to delist someone else.
You can promote a guy off the rookie list with the stroke of a pen but there is a procedure to move them from the senior list to the rookie list.
They must be delisted and be redrafted.
Yes there are those 4 without contracts and 2 known to have contracts on the table but yet to sign.

Re: The New List
Then we should rookie Clavarino, Phillips and Savage (all of whom I want to keep);
Let Lonie go somewhere he'll get a game (very sorry for him too) and get a modest draft pick for him ;
Bundle this with our other late draft picks and sell them to someone who needs them all, and get back one slightly better pick worth less in total;
Go into the draft with pick 21 and this one other, and no rookie picks.
That way we'll get the highest two picks we can, and keep our pretty good existing list reasonably intact.
(Ace, or anyone -- is that a viable strategy?)

Re: The New List
Can't trade players any more.
Lonie either plays for St Kilda or is delisted.
If he is delisted he may, but no guarantees, he will be picked up by another club as a delisted free agent.
Picks can still be traded, right up to the time they are used.
You can't just rookie an existing player.
There is a process to go through and it has risks.
They have to be delisted first.
Any other club could invite them to join as a delisted free agent.
Invitations declined, then go through the draft (national and rookie),
Any other club could claim them, not able to decline these invitations unless prepared to retire.
Then be reclaimed by the club in the rookie draft.
Can be done, last year Geelong delisted Lachie Henderson, then they released rookie Ryan Abbott as a free agent who joined St Kilda.
With their now spare rookie space Geelong reclaimed Lachie Henderson.
Henderson played in the losing grand final side.

Re: The New List
Lonie will be better taking the one year and try to build value for next year as an uncontracted player. '
Not sure on the rules of moving guys back to rookies.
Good do see some potential relief end of 2021 many will make the decision for us and either be resigned during the year or allowed to expire and traded/ released.
Also only 1 more yearn mcKenzie deal means if he doesn't deliver then isn't as costly cut him- Cant believe they extended him that long - great work for him and manager but not for the club.

Re: The New List
I read Lonie may still leave, if that is the case it would give us 3 extra list spots vacant with Savage, Phillips & Lonie gone. Leaving Clavarino and Marsh pending contracts.
Unless we delist Clavarino or Marsh I would expect the senior list spots go to Wilkie, Frawley and one at the draft. Although I think Wilkie can agree to a 3rd year on the rookie list?
The end of next year will be interesting with the draft expected to be very strong, plus free agents I would imagine considerable list changes eg Geary, Roberton?, Ryder? (retired), Dunstan, Kent delisted, McKenzie paid out and delisted. McKernan, Frawley, Clavarino, Marsh & Sinclair under scrutiny.
2021 Possible ins Josh Kelly FA & Jarrod Brander WCE OOC and who we had a nibble at this year.

Re: The New List
If the AFL set the senior list maximum size at 37 then we are fine temporarily with 37.8bloggs wrote: ↑Tue 17 Nov 2020 2:27pmace wrote: ↑Tue 17 Nov 2020 11:54am UPDATED for ED Phillips delisting

Why must the senior list still be reduced by one?
The AFL then requires at least one draft pick.
But then to activate at least one draft pick we must delist at least one player ahead of the draft.
You need a vacant seat before you can have someone sit in it.

Re: The New List
I haven't seen any announcement by the AFL as the AFLPA is yet to sign a new deal.
But the AFL did indicate to clubs, with one day to go in the trade period, that it would probably be senior 37 maximum, rookie A 4 maximum, rookie B 3 maximum and the salary cap reduction 10%
(9% off salary, 1% off super). But then a minimum of 1 draft pick.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
