Yeah.
I don’t do advice.
But there is something about the above post that rings true.
As a teen and young adult, I honestly blamed St Kilda (and still do) for Anxiety Disorder, Bi-Polar Type II, Multiple Personality Disorder, Borderline Disorder and later Complex Borderline Disorder, ADHD, and a variety of other ailments...including that I am stuck living in Japan teaching English, and marooned on Gilligams Island except Ginger ain’t interested.
Phoney humility? Probably. Blame the Saints for that too.
Not that anything needs to be wrong with you!
Just speaking for myself.
Why?
Well for one thing it has strengthened my resolve to survive adversity, at a level unequalled by any other team supporter.
As I have mentioned before, it is a little known fact that Saints supporters are deserving of honorary doctorates in Grief Counselling. No longer do I suffer anxiety watching St Kilda play as I never expect them to win, such is their appalling record, not that I ever give up hoping, and when they do win it is a real thrill and gives me great joy!
By lowering expectations, being a team supporter is so much more pleasurable, and although we all know AFL is like a religion, you need to have blind faith to be a true adherent.
(Don't wanna hijack thread with me, me , me ....well of course not)
I'm younger than you by 5 years....so that makes a difference in terms of the arc of a Saints follower. By the time I figured I was a proud St Kilda supporter wearing my red white and black to primary school. the Saints were in precipitous decline. One flash of a false dawn in 1978 I did see, and it was crushing how it all imploded.
Then we all know....Wooden Spoons, broke and can rattling, skuttlebutt in the press, butt of jokes generally, retirement home for ex-Carlton players..etc...rotating coaches and presidents, ...
Mid - 80s I met another St Kilda fan. He changed my mind. He was a 'star'. My high school years were just failure, promise...but this dude....he was school Captain, a sports champ, the girls loved him, he was frank and humble to boot....and he was a St Kilda fan. We laughed together about being Saints fans...and I merged my own (tragic) talent for self-depreciation with the lot of St Kilda..It was fun..fun again to be a Saints fan...Through those desperate years. But by '89, I was woken up again...the angry 8 year old in me wanted victory. The game against Carlton when Plugger kicked 10 on SOS - I was there...
So the '90s were a bit of a roller coaster...
I do think being a Saints fan has had an effect....yes, I expect to lose and laugh it off....but I do not agree that it is a good thing. It has been a real struggle to accept praise for things or to really compete when I know I am probably not favorite....I mean for jobs etc.
On the other hand...in the arts, music etc. I am a free spirit and I don't give a f%%&&( about being current or popular etc. so that is good. Again, I think St Kilda is a club that is tolerant of freaks or left of field types...mythology perhaps...
So a bit of both..
But when it comes to the club competing out on the field...I know that there is no room for it...it's just indulgence...Robert Harvey doesn't care....he just gets ball and calmly disposes of it well. So I try to bring a bit of that in too.
For super crazy try this...
As a swimmer, in order to maintain my form and pressure on the time clock, when I am in a vile mood, and trashing about with poor form and mind wandering, i sometimes think of my favorite players out on the track, giving it their best shot.
As for Mr Pelican...if he has five aliases etc., and is talking to himself on threads etc., it isn't ideal. but he probably knows it...or she..so, let it roll....
I am guessing this site is not the 'main one' for rational footy fans - if there are such beasts - we are the odd balls perhaps...so be it.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

i gloss over the personal rubbish.SaintJohno wrote: ↑Sun 08 Nov 2020 10:19pm I've only been on the forum for a short time compared to many, but I must say I've been disappointed by the attacks that a few, obviously passionate, posters slam onto each other. Obviously there's many years of history amongst these 5 or 6 regular saints fans, but it doesn't seem to contribute much to the discussion that many of us, or at least I want to read about. It's awesome that you guys have a lot of knowledge and passion about what's going on.... I want to hear that stuff. What I think is not cool is attacking each other about whether their post has backup or ITK sources etc or that in the past they screwed up with a prediction. Who really gives a flying f@#k if they were wrong? In the words of Joe Biden, let's all come together for the common passion of the Saints (he didn't actually say that) and just enjoy the rumours, predictions, hot tips and whatever else may come up because in the next few years there's a lot of love coming our way.
