Re: McKernan
Don't mind this at all. Zero draft pick cost; minimum chips contract and a versatile backup to Paddy and RoMa. Nice bit of business

Re: McKernan
Yeah I’ve turned around on this.
Wasn’t all that interested initially but as a one or two year stop gap and insurance player he’s a cheap step up from Abbott so I think it makes sense
Still hope we get another young ruck like 2 meter Peter

Re: McKernan
The best way to describe Shaun McKernan is an enigma.
At his best, he can be unbelievable, trouble is, his worst is really poor.
Having said that, given he is a delisted free agent, a good fit for us and likely to get several senior games due to big Paddy needing to be nursed a fair bit.

I'm thinking about Drew Petrie leaving Norf and going to WA. Simpson thought he'd be a good back up for Nic Nat, a good depth player.
Not sure it's a good idea to get a big guy as cover, at least when we got Michael.Gardiner he was still very skilful

Re: McKernan
The 30-year-old joins the Saints as a delisted free agent, becoming the second player to arrive at the club this Trade Period following the Brad Crouch announcement on Wednesday.
Head of List Management James Gallagher said McKernan was a handy acquisition to help cement the club’s ruck and forward structure.
“We’re really pleased to have signed Shaun for next season,” Gallagher said.
“Our structure in the ruck and key forward roles, having Paddy, Max and Rowan all available, was a real cornerstone of our game plan this year.
Shaun will provide us with the depth and flexibility we need to ensure that we are able to maintain that structure across the 2021 season.
- James Gallagher
“His experience will also be a great asset to assist in the growth of our young list.”
McKernan played 34 matches for Adelaide before moving to Essendon in 2015 to register another 53 games.

Re: McKernan
That's a worry because he will never play for Essendon again. I would guess though that in the games he didn't play, Joe Daniher did so they won't have him either.Beno88 wrote: ↑Fri 06 Nov 2020 3:14pm Shaun McKernan at Essendon vs St Kilda

Re: McKernan
I've also changed my opinion on McKernan, guess he has a much better track record than Ryan Abbott so to that extent I believe this is a smart move all the more so that he's coming "free of charge".
Got to trust the judgement of Gallagher & Co, they have certainly been on the money with previous draftees.

Re: McKernan
He's got a great pair of hands and a good kick; he strikes me as a real confidence player so when he's on, he's very good but the gap between his best and his worst is too great. If he can become more consistent, he'll be a more than handy acquisition for us.

Huge Free Kick against numbers vs Freee Kick for.
That is bad and needs to be addressed. There is clearly an issue, it is year after year.

As long as the good ones are the few games he plays in the seniors... bad ones can be kept for Sandy..silverhalo wrote: ↑Fri 06 Nov 2020 11:33pm He's got a great pair of hands and a good kick; he strikes me as a real confidence player so when he's on, he's very good but the gap between his best and his worst is too great. Re: McKernan
Thanks very much for posting this, Gaz. Wow - he is a lovely kick! And that checkside goal from his wrong foot is an absolute belter. On top of all that, he is seemingly a fantastic mark - not sure why he isn't more valued by the unwashed hordes at that cesspit old plane hanger - looks like a star to me!

Re: McKernan
Let’s see if Andreus Everett would consider a come back based on the shorter, not as good, big age gap, journey man much younger brother rule.
In all seriousness I don’t like this move, McKernan has always been a fringe player over his career. But I was also dead against recruiting Paddy Ryder who in 2019 was overweight, lacked mobility and was a shadow of his former self as a player.
And look how Paddy turned out in 2020

Re: McKernan
McKernan has plied his trade as a KPP and ruck. He has proved himself a versatile stop gap but he could easily have developed like a Cripps or Bontempelli given his athleticism. His brother was an impressive specimen.

Re: McKernan
Agree entirely. People need to understand he was also playing in a team devoid of any system or brand so he may become a bit more consistent in a side that has a better midfield and forward line.silverhalo wrote: ↑Fri 06 Nov 2020 11:33pm He's got a great pair of hands and a good kick; he strikes me as a real confidence player so when he's on, he's very good but the gap between his best and his worst is too great.
