St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
I was somewhat surprised that St Kilda opted to delist Ryan Abbott after just one season, and also young Jack Bell who was rookied in 2019 but has since been considered as lacking potential to make the big time.
It seems to me that St Kilda need to prioritise finding a replacement for Paddy Ryder who, at age 33 next year is probably only a season to season prospect to stay at elite level.
Rowan Marshall could well become #1 ruckman, but to me he seem best in the role of #2 ruck and play as a spare tall forward or back as required.
Shaun McKernan has been flagged as possibly coming to St Kilda next year, as a stop-gap forward/ruck, but at age 32 he is certainly not going to replace Paddy.
Could it be that the 211 cm Sam Alabakis is considered to be the next #1 ruckman for the Saints?
The cancellation of the reserves competitions this year has deprived the club of getting games into any of the 2nd tier players, but for Sam Alabakis, 24 next year, to (currently) escape delisting indicates that he may well have the potential to become a permanent ruckman.
I like the idea of bringing 2 metre Peter to St Kilda, but he has not so far been mentioned as being on the club's radar.
Is there anyone else??

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
We def need a ready made player that can step in for one of Paddy or Marshall in the context of injury/suspension
You pbly want a long term developing player as well
Wright seems like a good choice for the latter role.
A top up seems in order

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
If we knew more about the progress of Sam Alabakis it would make the position clearer. The fact that we are using experienced ruckmen on mimimal contracts as back-ups suggests to me that he might be within a year or two of getting a regular game.

The Age is reporting McKernan is coming to us!
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

Gags said we didn’t want to spend much on a forward/Ruck hence Mckernan on a one year makes me think we will have a big crack at Williams at West Coast or Bing next year!

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
Yes Abbott showed he was not much chop
McKernan fills the need of a back up forward/ruck.
But he is not good enough if BOTH Marshall and Ryder go down. ie He cannot play as a the No1 ruck, or the only ruck.

McKernan is 30, born September 1990 and is 196 cm, not really a ruckman but has performed ok in that role.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Wed 04 Nov 2020 1:41pm I was somewhat surprised that St Kilda opted to delist Ryan Abbott after just one season, and also young Jack Bell who was rookied in 2019 but has since been considered as lacking potential to make the big time.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
Here are a few players we could go after.
Sam Skinner he got cut from the Lions he is 198cm 23 years old played 3 games.
He is a ruck /forward as he got cut like McKernan why not offer a 1 year deal as well right age and big enough could be a prospect.
Or we could get Josh Schache he is out of contract at the Bulldogs 199cm 23 years old 56 games and 68 goals that's better then a lot of forwards. He might be a bit harder to get but we should try.
We are loosing Carlisle to Hawthorn and we look very exposed down back Willkie is only 191cm and lets hope Dougal doesn't go down or we are in a lot of trouble like we were a few times against some big forwards.so why not get one or both of them and try them as key defenders.
I know the club does not have Key positions as a priority but we need a good spine or we will really struggle.

I reckon Carlisle will stay and Clavarino will debut.Saints58 wrote: ↑Wed 04 Nov 2020 8:59pm Here are a few players we could go after.

Rumours on BF we are interested in a kid from a Sandringham Dragons called Max Heath 204cm & 89kg a big lump of a lad. From the HS he has already had 6 clubs recruiting staff speak with him.

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
You have a point, but Ryder’s season shows how important a very good tap ruckman can be.
With the 6-6-6 rule in place, winning it from the centre and moving it forward quickly allows you to possibly score before the opposition has a chance to stack the backline.
I’d love us to have a back up ruckman good enough to play Marshall predominantly as a key forward. As it stands, if Paddy falls over Marshall has to take over No.1 ruck duties.
I thought this cost us a great deal structurally in the semi final against Richmond. Particularly as Battle had to play back to cover for Carlisle’s absence

Yeah, I agree. I heard it from a really good source - I think his nickname was Teddy Bear, or something like that: John Lee Hooker, or My Name is Earl, or something, anyway he reckons we might be getting Shaun McKernan, to fill in that gap. Bookmark it. Take it to the bank - I'm sure that this Scoop comes from a club insider (I have a theory that we all have an Inner-Bitch, that sometimes sneaks out).

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
With picks 17, 64, 77, 93 Max Heath is unlikely.
Pick 17 would be too early, pick 64 too late.
If he slipped to 64 definitely grab him.
But realistically we would need to trade someone out to get a second round pick for him.

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
Thats going off what, amatuers phantom drafts?
Our biggest list need right now are a young ruckman and perhaps another key forward. Our recruiters know there stuff and perhaps rate him or another young ruckman highly. Time will tell but I wouldnt rule out using 17 on a ruckman or us getting a 2nd or 3rd draft pick/s with trades.
Also remember we havent seen half of these kids play in the past 12 months so it is more of a guessing game for the amatuers.

Re: St Kilda's Ruck Stocks 2021
Now we have McKernan, I wonder if there is hope for Bell in the rookie department, once the new numbers are official. Perhaps he couldn't put on weight quick enough.
Zach Reid may also be a chance at our FRDP if he falls through the scramble for mids.
