Do the right thing Gears!
Even the great Matthew Lloyd and Kane Cornes can see what the right thing to do is!

So they are saying Jack Steele for captain. I would wait a year and just let Jack consolidate his position as an A-grade midfielder.The_Dud wrote: ↑Sat 31 Oct 2020 2:22pm Even the great Matthew Lloyd and Kane Cornes can see what the right thing to do is!

Roughy and Ratts have tasted multiple success.
They'll be talking in private about Gears' future, and what's best for the team.
If Gears plays next year, I won't be happy at all (as will many others) but I just hope the club has thought it through

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
I wouldn’t say he’s done per’se but Geary isn’t clearly top 22 anymore.
He’s more than capable of doing a job but pbly is on the fringe more than anything else.
Can’t be a Captain in those circumstances...
If for no other reason, to shut down this conversation week after week

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
Roo handed over the captaincy in his last year and he had infinitely more reasons to keep it than Gears does. Hopefully common sense prevails.

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
He should only hand it over if there is someone who wants to really do it and has the capacity to do so. Steele sounds like a good candidate, but impossible for anyone on the outside to make the call.
Hopefully, the club is creating an environment where at least half a dozen players could comfortably step into the role.
It's an important position but probably a bit overrated these days.

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
But Roo was clearly best 22, he was probably best 6.
Our list of players goes off a cliff at 16 or so upwards, so perhaps Gears might squeeze in. But those played in the 16-26 range surely need to rotate a lot.
Selection is kind of baffling really. At various times this year, Battle, Sinclair even Ryder were not deemed good enough, and of course Robbo, Webster didn’t get a guernsey, not to mention Savage. While Gears and Kent played on.
Without captaincy I suppose Gears and Savage would rotate depending on match ups, as long as Robertson and Webster remain unpickable.

Gears for skipper 2021 in his last year. Bloke is as tough as concrete.
Then make Steele and Howard joint captains.

I expect him to continue to be a great role model for the players, will step down from the captaincy and generally playreserves with the odd game in the senors if injuries etc hit.

Ratts said at time of his contract extension:
“Gears is one of the best leaders in the game and his influence on our group and our entire club is enormous,” Ratten said.
“He is an incredibly resilient person, and we have seen that first-hand over the past few years with the way he has dealt with his own injury setbacks, but also the challenges we’ve been through as a club.
“The way he supported his teammates through the shutdown period earlier this year and then his leadership within the hub has just been first-class.
“Whether it’s playing in defence, up forward or on a wing, we know every job we give him is going to be performed to a really high level and that’s such a luxury for a coach.
“Gears has had such a big impact on guys like Nick Coffield, Ben Long, Ben Paton and Hunter Clark, and just helping them understand what it takes to perform week-in, week-out throughout the year.
“We are very lucky to have someone like Jarryn at our football club"

If he was going to do the right thing he would have retired and taken on the playing coaching role for Sandringham.The_Dud wrote: ↑Sat 31 Oct 2020 2:22pm Even the great Matthew Lloyd and Kane Cornes can see what the right thing to do is!

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
What a really poor disrespectful thread to a guy who gives his all and his dedication and determination is a fine example to our team!!!!
He speaks well in public and he has the respect and admiration of his teammates.
Yes he doesn't have the skill set of Nick R but he is still a fine leader.
I would love to see his effort and loyalty and example rewarded by holding up the cup with Ratts next September.

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
Never heard of a Captain stepping down, and accepting a role predominantly in the Reserves. If he is here, he’ll play seniors and hell probably be captain. Steele has just had a breakout season. Don’t spoil it..let him bloom again, and more, without the yoke of Captain.realdeal wrote: ↑Sun 01 Nov 2020 12:43pmGeary has already signed on to play next year..WellardSaint wrote: ↑Sat 31 Oct 2020 5:34pm Roughy and Ratts have tasted multiple success.

If we are in a pinch, how about Paddy Ryder for a year.

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
I'm on record for wishing to see Jarryn Geary hand over the captaincy, mainly as he is borderline "best 22" and I felt he was keeping younger players with superior skills out of the team.
But having witnessed Geary playing some of the best football of his career in 2020, courtesy of superior strategic role-playing by Brett Ratten, who obviously regards him highly, I now feel that decisions on his future in 2021 should be entrusted to the coach and his teammates.
It's quite possible that Geary will remain captain at the start of the season and that at some point, depending on how he performs, will hand over the captaincy to Jack Steele.
Makes sense to me, and helps me avoid getting worked up about this issue!

If Geary is captain again next year then we have seriously lost the plot. It would be bordering on insanity actually.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Mon 02 Nov 2020 10:49am I'm on record for wishing to see Jarryn Geary hand over the captaincy, mainly as he is borderline "best 22" and I felt he was keeping younger players with superior skills out of the team.

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
to cover the past ground here
Roo should have handed over the day he drew level with Frawley and helped the team in a lesser role
and to think of the next leader - Im not sure that Membrey is the one
How you present/speak/play is very important - and on those elements alone Rowan Marshall for me

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
I think it's fair to say the consensus of saints supporters agree that Geary isn't in our best 22.
It reminds me of a similar dilemma in the Aussie cricket team.
Tim Paine is skipper but questionable if he's in our best 11.
Similar attributes to Geary, highly respected, admired, good at bringing a team together.
I've got a feeling despite what we think, the players will again nominate Gears as their leader!

Love Jack but he's a quiet character and needs another year of exposure before taking the captaincy IMO. He will make it but leadership by example is only one attribute of many.Gershwin wrote: ↑Sat 31 Oct 2020 4:35pmSo they are saying Jack Steele for captain. Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

Re: Do the right thing Gears!
If Gears does factor in the best 22 in 2021, why can't we have a co-captaincy? Seems a legit way to gently usher in a new captain for 2022.
If Gears somehow drops out of best 22 consistently he could decide what to do then.
