Dumb question..........................?
If Luke Dunstan played well enough in round 1 to earn 1 Brownlow vote then why was he dropped for the next game? Before you have a go at me saynta, this is an honest question.

Re: Dumb question..........................?
Because umpires notice midfielders who get the ball not how they use it or how they adhere to team structures.

Re: Dumb question..........................?
I agree - i'm sure that some umps just look at the stats sheet & allocate votes accordingly (sometimes).
Look at the Brownlow - it's a midfielders award.
Can anyone remember the last non-midfielder to win it ?
There might be the odd ruckman with a chance to win one, but anyone else ? no chance !
I'm sure there's been games where e.g. Dangerfield gets three votes & his "opponent" get two votes.
Mids have no accountability unless they are assigned a tagging role.
& yeah, the better ones work both ways & go back to help the defenders, but they have no direct opponent.
They really need to overhaul the Brownlow voting.

I think that Ratts decided that he wanted to go for more pace in the team. And over the year being quicker than our opponents worked very well for us.SaintPelican66 wrote: ↑Mon 19 Oct 2020 3:03pm If Luke Dunstan played well enough in round 1 to earn 1 Brownlow vote then why was he dropped for the next game? But personally like the umps I thought that against North that he was one of our best players and was very stiff to not be selected.

Re: Dumb question..........................?
As is always the case with Luke, he gets killed on the spread due to a distinct lack of pace and running capacity. Give him McKenzie's running abilities and he would be a star.SaintPelican66 wrote: ↑Mon 19 Oct 2020 3:03pm If Luke Dunstan played well enough in round 1 to earn 1 Brownlow vote then why was he dropped for the next game? Round 1 was sun 22nd march
Round 2 was sun 14th june .
I'm not a hundred percent sure but i think something was happening between those two days and i think that may have been a contributing factor as to why he was dropped.
He then tore his pect sidelining him for the rest of the year

He certainly was in our best 3 that day and didn't deserve to be dropped.

Re: Dumb question..........................?
Yep, very curious decision. Was best on ground for us by numerous metrics. There were plenty of players who had horrible games in comparison but got picked the next week (and weeks after).
From the outside it always seems there's some players who can't land an ongoing spot no matter how well they play, while others continue to get picked mediocre performance after mediocre performance.

Receiving a Brownlow these days is like winning the US Presidency, its a popularity contest and all about who you are willing to suck up to in life.

The Brownlow is now irrelevant AFAIC.
It's rather a quaint little award.

3 months is a long time between games.
Also, people haven’t really caught on that we won round 2. But lost round 1. The best player in a losing side. Team balance was obviously out, it was rectified.

Re: Dumb question..........................?
I'm a huge fan of Luke Dunstan, and also like our coach.
Dunstan was very good against North, perhaps he didn't come back after the break in tip-top condition, or perhaps the coach wanted more pace and spread. (Remember Luke Ball). It was very unfortunate that Luke was injured and missed the majority of the season.
After losing Gresham and Zac Jones toward the end of the season we were desperate for grunt in the middle, and with a game or so to go we probably had to choose between Hannabury & Dunstan. In my mind it was a line ball choice. The selectors probably didn't want to bring in two underdone players.
Dunstan is close to his peak, he was an early draft pick and was 'thrown in the deep end' from the time he joined the club and performed admirably in a poor team. He deserves his chance in a good team, and still has the potential to be our 'Joel Selwood'.
I'll be very disapointed if we let him go.

Re: Dumb question..........................?
Rightly or wrongly, Ratten has similar types such as Hannebery, Ross and Zac Jones ahead of Dunstan in the pecking order.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Mon 19 Oct 2020 3:48pm I think that Ratts decided that he wanted to go for more pace in the team. Personally I think he was very stiff to get injured when he did this season; which, from memory, happened at about the same time as Hannebery went down.
IMO he’d have sewn up a spot if not for that untimely injury and would have made it very difficult to drop him. We need to think very carefully about whether we really want to trade him out.
He hasn’t even hit his peak yet and I feel it’s the type of decision that may come back to bite us if he goes to Carlton for instance.
The other question is, can he reinvent himself as anything other than an inside mid? Would he offer more than Kent does in his role, for instance?
Yes, Kent is quicker but can he get as much of the ball as Dunstan? Is he as strong as Dunstan in close and does he have Dunstan’s footy smarts?

Back on "AFL Conspiracies" Vortex??
Would really like you to explain exactly how your assertion "popularity contest and all about who you are willing to suck up to in life" can be applied to the awarding of votes for the Brownlow by individual umpires, who are independent of the AFL Commission and clubs.
"Any candidate for political office, once chosen for leadership, must have the will to take the wheel of a very powerful car, tasked from time to time to make a fast journey down a narrow, precipitous mountain road – and be highly skilled at driving. Otherwise, he is disqualified from the company of competent leaders."

Neale was a totally unexpected winner. Nobody thought he had a chance but he obviously sucked up to the right people. Did he even play a game this year?Sanctorum wrote: ↑Tue 20 Oct 2020 10:37amBack on "AFL Conspiracies" Vortex??
