Very good postYoungGeorge wrote: ↑Sun 11 Oct 2020 4:37pm No point blaming the Umps gents.
Its Cotchin's 'MO' and most great sides are 'unsociable' - we should've been ready for it.
A decent fight would've shown we were there with intent to win.
Instead we were jumped and allowed ourselves to be intimidated.
If we want to play with the 'big boys' we've got to think & execute like the big boys.
Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?

Yeah mate agree we should have been over aggressive not under from the start . We needed to send the message we are here to play & you blokes have to earn it but it was pretty lame start IMOThe Fireman wrote: ↑Sun 11 Oct 2020 4:49pm we are soft as a team. Obvious in Dogs game too we like fast non contact footy
If I was coaching against us I’d instruct players to hit as hard as they can every tackle....saints don’t like it tough..
We need an edge and that’s why I like Long in the side
Yes Savage kicked a nice long goal
But Long would’ve had some smaller Tiger forwards looking over their shoulder ..,

NEVER let Richmond manhandle us like that again Saints ....never ...its unacceptable. We need to play closer to the edge - they do and they get away with it almost every time ...
We were at the mercy of the umpires. If they’d enforced the rules we wouldn’t even be discussing this
Ridiculous response. They played over the edge against us and got away with it time after time. I would rather have seen them at least let him know it was not acceptable. What do you think would have happened if Jones did the same to Cotchin ? I dont advocate a lack of discipline, I also dont advocate a lack of spirit when the bully is kicking sand in your face ....but hey ...keep on waiting for those umpiring decisions to fall your way ....thats worked well so far .....watching Dusty and Cotchin just laughing because the only person who even tried to respond to such a blatant bully tactic was a clear indicator that they knew they could do more or less what they liked. ....and they did ...

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
This thread genuinely amuses me. I can only imagine the uproar if blokes charged in while we had a shot on goal, giving away the ball when we were behind. Hindsight is fantastic isn’t it. If Billings had kicked the goal I’m sure the boys would have got stuck into Cotchin. Of course Billings missed and the game went on.

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
The Tigers knew we were scared for not taking on that thug, and they feasted on it.
They knew we would take short steps.
We kept doing it- just look at all the goals they kicked from congestion.
One or two would be flukes, but there were so many that it speaks to a pattern of us holding back and not being physical enough.
With each successive snap from congestion, they grew bolder.
And our guys grew more timid.
Maybe our guys were hoping someone else would charge in and apply pressure. So nobody did

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
Lots of antediluvian opinions on this thread.
It's absolutely true that star players will get away with stuff that sees the likes of Long copping a suspension. Barry Hall in 2005 was the most extreme instance, but there've been plenty of others.
The answer to this problem is not for our players to try to take the law into their own hands. Pushing and shoving and yelling just ends up in a free kick reversal. Breaking the jaw of an opponent in retaliation would be far more satisfying and effective, but would see whoever does it well on the way to being rubbed out of the game forever.
Retaliation is a mug's game in 21st century football. Unless you are a bigger star than any of the players at our club.

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
The truth is the umpire once again failed to do his job. Clear 50 and the umpire ignored it. We should have been kicking from the goal line and I believe the players just assumed that the umpire would pay it so we didn't remonstrate.

retaliation isn't a mugs game it's an essential part of life let alone in the game of footy..you wanna turn the other cheek ? Good for you..see you at sunday mass.
If you let the bully at school stand over you it will be relentless.
By at least remonstrating with sneaky thug Cotchin it would have at least let the public and the umpires know that something was not right. If they all sulk off then it will be soon forgotten.
The team needs to learn how to protect it's own.

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
In Carl Ditterich’s day retribution would have been swift and Cotchin would not have known what hit him. But we are no longer in those times. However, I think there is a time to stand up to thuggery and all players in the vicinity should have piled in, despite the risk of losing a shot on goal. We should have then spent the next 10 minutes belting them in every marking or pack opportunity. Unfortunately we will have to hope that someone from Port Adelaide does the job on Cotchin.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

What should have happened is a 50m penalty, a goal and then the push and shove remonstration which would have fired us up.

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
The worst of it is their coach justifying, praising and gloating over Lynch's and Cotchin's "pushing the envelope" approach - it's a "man's game, I would not want them to play any different way" BS.
Cotchin was not that far away from causing a serious neck injury - and he's being praised for it by his coach and the dangerous incident was not even reviewed by the AFL - and it wasn't even worthy of a 50 metre penalty!!
Everyone should be remonstrating against Cotchin, his coach, the umpires and the AFL.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Re: Who remonstrated with Cotchin ?
If that Cotchin tackle was performed on the rugby field, would it have been deemed a dangerous tackle and a reportable one at that?
That's what I'd like to know.
Antideluvian AFL thinking = pre Neil Schache thinking -- the AFL is not considering the real possibility of a serious neck injury - they are still in the dark ages/have short memories - that Cotchin tackle should have jolted their memories.
The media is complicit too - it was just glossed over.
