The umpires had a very bad night, missed a lot of frees more than usual...and it definitely helped one team more than the other.
Richmond play on the edge, they went over the line a lot last night. It’s the umpires responsibility to keep the game within the rules, they failed, and it cost us.
Our mistakes are irrelevant.
True, except for the 5 easy goals we missed.
Our mistakes don’t make the bad umpiring exceptable.
It cost us what?
It only cost us because Richmond made the most of their scoring opportunities when it counted and we didn't. That is what cost us. Umpiring is rarely good.
So you’re saying that the poor decisions didn’t effect the game?
There’s no argument from me about what you’re saying regarding our chances. But that doesn’t mean the umpiring didn’t effect the outcome.
Richmond were good...we missed opportunities...but the umpires made poor calls, missed numerous frees and even screwed up the goal review which effected the outcome.
They allowed Richmond to step over the line without pulling them back, which gave them an advantage. Last week against the Lions they were pulled up on it, this week they got away with just about anything.
I'm saying umpiring is a part of the game, just like accurate kicking. One you have control over the other you don't.
I'm very certain our wasteful set shot kicking had far more effect on the result than any decision made by those the umpires.
Again, not sure how we improve the umpiring but you know the rest.
No excuses.
That’s exactly how Ratts responded in his presser. The AFL aren’t going to say they made mistakes and offer us a rematch are they?
We go to work to improve the things we can control and Ratts said that’s the focus going forward

That’s all well and good but why when Richmond infringed v Brisbane did the umpires award 50 meter penalties but against us refused. Billing’s and Marsh both should have been kicking from the goal line. Then Billing’s running onto a loose ball in the square just got tackled with the ball a meter in front of him. All 3 clear as day no argument no grey area just umpires deciding they will go against the rules.
I coach footy at a youth level, and of course you have to control the controllable, you cannot focus on umpiring mistakes, you cannot control them.
Even as a coach though I would be going to the club admin to ask the league for a please explain if we’d been served up that from the umpires.
But as a fan of the game, not a coach, I’m focusing on the fact the umpires made mistakes that cost us goals and scoring opportunities. Not saying we would have won, but the out come would have been different.
The umps made and missed plenty...they didn’t miss them when the Tigers played the Lions last week. Had they adjudicated those rules it would of been different. The Tigers attack on the man and slowing down the opposition would have cost them like it did against the Lions.
The Tigers planned on holding us up whenever they could, because they couldn’t match us for speed, which they did illegally, and they blocked King and scragged him illegally all night so King couldn’t get first hands on the ball. Which meant we weren’t able to get the ball in quick and close to goal which is how we kick most of our goals.
The umps helped them in stopping us by allowing those usually illegally tactics. It took away our strengths.
Against the Lions they got called for that stuff, which is why the Lions got so many one on ones in an open fwd line and why they scored well. Because like us the Lions prefer the ball on the ground deep with an open fwd line and need their set shots in very close.
The umps in missing those frees that they paid last week helped take away one of our scoring strengths, and therefore changed the outcome.

He was probably silently fuming though and as a mate pointed out, will use the experience as a very important lesson for the playing group because there will be a next time. He’ll let others complain for us.
On a side note:
Richmond are a very hardened finals team.
They have also been playing finals since 2013. Missed in 2016. That's 7 out of the last 8 years.
Hardwick is now their longest serving coach. That is some achievement. This is our first finals since 2011.
Just in terms of comparing Richmond and Saints using years:
2004 Saints (first year of finals) = 2013 Tigers (first year of finals)
2011 Saints (final year of that successful era) = 2020 Tigers or 8 years later.
After 2011, the Saints missed the next 8 finals while Richmond is still going strong.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
publicly the teamhas to accept it and do as ratts said. privately i hope they're speaking to the afl.
as a fan we certainly have a right to complain. all well and good controlling what you can control on the field, but if all other things are equal and the umps continually treat you second best, that's where you'll end up. no if and buts about it.
