Sad news StKilda Premiership player Jim Read passed away this morning

Sad news. Remember when he was cleaning up players including Barry Davis week after week before he copped i think a 12 week suspension.

Came back for the grannie against the druggies but got cleaned up big time.

Rest in peace mate. You were a true hard nut sainter.

Very sad to hear of Jim's passing. A Saints legend for ever. After leaving the Saints he became playing coach at Beaconfield where he had amazing success over a number of years, became a life member and had such a wonderful influence on so many people. It would be well worth checking out Beaconsfield's facebook page to read about Jim and see just how much respect people had for him. RIP Jim.

Jim was a terrific player and ferocious at the ball and anybody that threatened to get it before he did. The 10 week suspension he copped in 1965 was well deserved, it happened right in front of me in the outer at Moorabbin. Barry Davis was bending to take possession of the ball, Jim came in at full pace never appearing like he would tackle or bump and collected him with the point of the elbow. Davis was badly injured, Jim copped his suspension. The previous week at the MCG Jim and Richmond's much larger Mike Perry collided head on right in the middle of the ground. Jim executed a classic shirt front, albeit with a fair dose of raised forearm! Perry was charged off by several trainers.

We needed to channel some of Jimmy's spirit against Cotchin and Lynch on Friday night, we would have been a lot closer. As a kid, I always thought Jim, with his always neat appearance, looked the perfect 19th or 20th man in the classy StKilda dressing gown. But the same bloke was a somewhat underated jet playing on the wing. R.I.P. Jim Read, another link to StKilda's greatest era gone.

I was just a young kid at the time, but his shirt fronts were a work in progress before the Essendon game, where his elbow got between him and Barry Davis' head. By the way, that game was our first ever defeat at Moorabbin.
