Fair call by Mick. I heard pretty much the same from a former Ballarat based Saint nearly 40 years ago. I worked for several years with the ex-wife of another great Saints player from the same area and era. She had many a tale to tell, pretty well all on the mark, from the 70's and 80's. It was well known that Muir would goes as hard at his own team mates in match practice as he would the opposition. Hence, the nickname. Don't take offence, Malthouse was at the Saints during Muir's early days so he would know.

Even though Robbie as the young bloke would have acted on the Maddog nickname and made it somewhat of a moniker, it’s not surprising in his older wisdom he wish he never had it and may have made some better choices and not got into as much trouble. I didn't hear the whole interview, but perhaps he could have been more sensitive by prefacing that his perception at the time was or whatever....but I'm not sure he deserves to be publicly shamed like he has either. I don’t like that.

While Robert Muir’s life sounds like a tragedy which has included child abuse, mental illness, violence and racism. I also think some people are a bit annoyed with the victim mentality when he has also been the perpetrator.

His life sounds like a tragedy brought about by terrible circumstances including racism which is one important element of this tragedy, but I think the article failed to capture this. This is why I can’t stand the ABC. Everyone should know how the media works by now and the wider media is using Rob just as much as Rob is using the media. Anyway, food for thought.

There is no doubt Robbie had a hard time of it, like most indigenous players over the years. He probably could have handled it better, but by sounds of it even his own club didnt support him during his time. I listened to Malthouse and in my view he said nothing wrong, but was probably insensitive to how tough it has been for indigenous players during the period.
