Re: Changes v Lions
In: Savage, Carlisle, Kent
Out: Sinclair (rest - only had 7 possessions last week), Paton if still not right, and Lonie (who did okay, but Kent is another speedster we could do with - and his long, low-raking kicks to the goalsquare might be handy?).

A lot of love for Lonie I just don't rate him . Does a lot of running but doesn't seem to get much of the ball , too small to lay a decent tackle & not quick enough to break lines & his goal kicking of late has been ordinary. I would prefer Parker adds a bit of X factor is quick can take a grab & his tackling pressure is better IMO

Re: Changes v Lions
I think most likely is
Lonie OUT
Parker IN
Kent and Carlisle will be wanting IN but only Paton likely to miss.

Re: Changes v Lions
Great to see that there is real competition for spots
Good arguments for the inclusion of 4 or 5 players...apparently Abbot was BOG in the scratch match too.
Can't remember this for quite a few years....usually making arguments for players being dropped.

Re: Changes v Lions
All under pressure for various reasons
Long
Geary
Paton (inj)
Lonie
Sinclair
Bytel
All pushing for selection
Carlisle
Phillips
Kent
Parker
Roberton
Savage
Good problem to have when they also have
Gresham and Hannaberry auto inclusions if available

The quintessential St Kilda conundrum, two players, each with deficiencies that if we could mix & match we'd have our perfect player.bangaulegend wrote: ↑Fri 21 Aug 2020 8:13pm A lot of love for Lonie I just don't rate him . Parker: speed, height, marking, tackling, physical mongrel
Lonie: goal sense, crafty, stager, awareness, cheeky bastard
Combine those traits and we have a premiership player.

I'm sure the sports science boffs will be able to Frankenstein players DNA eventually. Imagine seeing Lenny Harvey kicking it straight down the throat of Tony Reiwoldt.

Re: Changes v Lions
Given the eternal subject of team changes, as the ultimate exercise which players on our List would you envisage standing on the Podium accepting Premiership Medallions?
Because that is the ultimate exercise
Because that is the ultimate exercise

Would prefer to graft some Parker on to Hill/Ghost Like wrote: ↑Fri 21 Aug 2020 10:37pmThe quintessential St Kilda conundrum, two players, each with deficiencies that if we could mix & match we'd have our perfect player.bangaulegend wrote: ↑Fri 21 Aug 2020 8:13pm A lot of love for Lonie I just don't rate him . For me the jury is still out on Parker, but I totally agree with your Lonie opinion. You have summed him up admirably. No doubt he is a terrific bloke, clearly he is popular with fellow players and some supporters.bangaulegend wrote: ↑Fri 21 Aug 2020 8:13pm A lot of love for Lonie I just don't rate him . For mine, he seems to not be quite up to AFL standard. I really do hope that he proves me wrong, but he has already had a lot of chances. Certainly he shows flashes at times which seems to serve as a teaser and so he gets another chance, and so the cycle continues.

Re: Changes v Lions
mmm, I wonder what whether Jenny Kee would be a better forward or back
That said, it would not totally surprise me if you are on the money - however I did note in the Parker article on Saints web site, that it broached the subjected of Matty still being happy , just to see his teammates wearing the jumper even if he was not playing.
As i read that I wondered whether I should be looking for the message between the the lines
It will be interesting to see the final line up.
I would not be against him getting a run because at some point he deserves another chance to prove himself.
However given the importance of this match, I would hope that the selectors would pick the side on a "best available" basis rather than sentiment or any PC criteria

Re: Changes v Lions
So it looks like they are only releasing the team the night before each match?
What a great idea and hope is a permanent concept.
Always thought it was stupid on Thursday night releasing a squad of 26 and then a final 22 on Friday, which was still 2 days out from match day if it was a Sunday game . Made no logical sense at all.

Re: Changes v Lions
Think it was just a covid measure due to the uncertainty, short time gaps between matches, also teams not knowing who they are playing, where they are playing, and actually, what they are playing.saintspremiers wrote: ↑Sat 22 Aug 2020 9:04am So it looks like they are only releasing the team the night before each match?

Perhaps in line with the covid spirit, and another measure to maintain/increase public interest, the final 22 should not be known until the teams run out on the ground. Imagine the intrigue, the paparazzi around the buses, the excitement that could be generated!

Didn't the AFL sell the footy record. If they did they no longer give a stuff when the clubs finalise their team.

Didn't it all have to be announced first by Timmy at 6:21:05 PM on 7 News on a Thursday evening?
