The jury is in...

Post: # 1853183Post Ghost Like »

Whilst some needed the unfortunate early retirement / delisting of Paddy McCartin to realise we erred in not selecting Petracca, 2020 is the season Petracca (& our pain) has truly arrived. Many were acutely aware of that mistake.

De Goey has put more quality games on the board than Petracca but I now believe Petracca will end up his equal if not better.

The salt in wound for us is that we are crying out for a midfield bull, someone explosive, someone who genuinely hurts when the team and when he plays poorly.

P.S.: Bennell is going OK for someone that cost nothing but a little faith & an ultimatum.

Only thing to disagree with was when exactly the jury came in...
Regardless of when Petracca hits his prime... most recognised the error in the selection within the first 2 years and certainly in the last 3.

Only ppl in denial haven’t known it for some time

Probably the jury being in is not about who was better but when we would actually begin to feel the pain of that error.

Still I have no doubt he would have been s*** canned from pillar to post on here getting to where he is now. Calls for trades, sacking selection committees and recruiting staff.

Couldn’t have been any worse than what happened with Paddy though

No doubt and up until this year we would have been wishing we'd taken DeGoey. But like Melbourne supporters we would have been saying "It could have been worse, at least we..."

Yeah he looks pretty good right now hey. And he has more than contributed over the last few seasons.

Was a no brainer number one choice, for all but us it seems...

No need for a jury - only one contestant, so in that regard the selection of Petracca would have been better in hindsight. However, I do not agree he has arrived - he has to put a good consistent season or two in before he can be regarded as an A grade player. Has had a couple of good matches, need to see how he goes when he gets more attention like the elite mids, which hasn't happened yet. Strong and an excellent handballer, but tends to handball sometimes when he should be kicking imo.

I would still prefer DeGoey, more destructive and more the type of player we lack. Credit to Petracca, but he has taken a long time to get anywhere, and I would still be interested to know how McCartin would be going in our current forward line if he had the same number of games as Petracca, without the injuries of course.

We couldn't have managed the controversy and undisciplined acts that De Goey committed early on...Not to mention the latest controversy.

The pain started on draft night.
There was no need for a jury.
All that was needed was a competent judge.
The verdict was fishy from the start.

Elshaug major blunder.
I know for a fact a week going into the draft we had decided Petracca.
Pelchen was moved on just before the draft & when he heard on the radio we picked Mc Cartin he rang Elshaug in bewilderment.
Elshaug explains to Pelchen that Petracca didnt interview too well he was up himself etc
Pelchen says to Elshaug " How did he come across, as an Axe - Murderer?!!"
They got cute with strategy as well as they were spooked by the Boyd and Buddy deals they went for scarcity of player & position requirement against "Best available Talent".
I will hand it to Grant Thomas in the early 00s era in the top 10-20 picks you always go" Best Available Talent"

Wasn’t it The Insipid One who had the final call and he chose Paddy because he was too close to the Petracca family?

Not soon enough for Hawthorn & possibly too late for Melbourne.

I wish a few more of ours had "a good game against a shiteful opponent - cool story" from last week that we could get excited about.

I didn't see much opposition at all from the Hawks- a lot of average Melbourne players looked like stars.

But surely the big mistake by all concerned was that Christian should have actually gone to the Lions?
(FWIW Lions scored Harris Andrews @ pick 61 just to rub it in that St Kilda royally stuffed up the 2014 draft - acknowledging of course Paddy's concussion issues were not known then. I think (?) J. Lonie is only 2014 pick now in the AFL side. He is a survivor if not a KPP)

Still stand by the paddy pick. Back then we picked best available. No one can predict injuries.

So when people say "Let's compare them in 3 to 5 years", it really isn't worth revisiting in 3 to 5 years?

Not too much else generating some chat in the current environment, especially with 9 days to fill following a disgraceful performance.

If Paddy wasn't injured a combo of McCartin and King would be a massive building block moving forward.
