Big footy = big s***. Don't let the door hit you where God split you.
I have been on this forum since last century. You are johnny come lately even taking in your previous nicknames.
The forum is still going strong despite crap threads to trade out our stars before a season has properly got underway.

Nick if you didn’t post such crap and speculative garbage, none of this would have happened. Typically, you cause a drama then install yourself as the victim. You’ll enjoy SS far more by only engaging with those that are here primarily to talk football and despite some criticism your threads have at least generated some reasonable discussion.
If you’re feeling harassed by a particular few forumites that won’t leave you be... and a few on here will certainly follow you around, perhaps you may consider use of the foe function. Not that your asking, but my advice is just don’t bother with those that really don’t add to the forum.

Re: Geary
I have put on here before that I subscribe to building from the back 6
Coffield. Howard. Wilkie
Clark. Carlisle. Long
With Paton who is emerging allowing some mixing and matching so flexibility and Roberton in reserve
This is the defence I have promoted to take St Kilda to a long cherished second flag
And now we have that outcome
I do not subscribe to any of the players named transitioning to “mids” because the midfield is a seperate issue as is our forward structure so we develop, Draft and trade as required
Which brings us to Geary (where courage and leadership are not the query)
Carlton used the template of shifting the nominated opponent to a wing, where he impacted absent the attention of Geary
So it is not only horses for courses - it is match day options
On current form you would suggest that Butler would attract the opposition Premier “small” defender because of the danger factor
So if Geary is not taking someone who takes him to negate his impact?

Re: Geary
Being underestimated is Jared's strength at the moment. The nice thing about this team is there are plenty of players for the opposition to worry about so load and opportunities are spread. As a result Jared may stay off the radar in terms of specialist match ups for quite a while and he is versatile so can be shifted if he looks to be in any match up trouble. A bit off topic, the one I think is on shaky selection ground is Jack Lonie. Going ok however with Langlands, Bytel, Byrnes waiting he is under pressure to keep up his good form. Kent's monster goal last game didn't do Jack any favours.

Re: Geary
Geary is *not* best 22.
His latest game is just one game.
I look at his career in its entirety and his poor skills esp kicking.
Oppo fwds let him run free because of his inaccuracy and they roll the dice on him turning it over.

On a serious note, I would “rest” Lonie for a couple of weeks and give Bytel and or Byrnes a few games specifically as a forward pocket and maybe a few runs through the midfield. Ease them in so to speak.

Club can afford to rest Lonie because Butler, Billings, and Gresh can do what he does, and do it better.

Re: Geary
I watched the Freo match again today and just tried to freeze some key moments in the match...
In the last quarter when the game was there to be won...after Zac kicked a goal to put us level...there’s a clearance out of the centre from Freo and Mundy kicks a grubber to centre half back. Gears and Ross are in prime position in front and Seb shepherds Gears who is clear....
...there was only 2 minutes 20 seconds left on the clock until the final siren
Gears had Zak Jones on his left (and that’s an easy handball with his right hand) or Jack Steel who is in front of him and facing him ( and Jack has clear view of Brad Hill who is free and just a few metres behind Jones and basically parallel with Gears...Gears probably wouldn’t have seen him, but Steele can easily if Gears had handballed instead of kicking wildly to a 50/50 contest.
Big Rowan was also in front of Gears but he was slightly to the right so it may have needed a short quick handball with the left. The other thing that we don’t know is what was said by Seb Ross to Gears...if he actually said anything at all. In any case, Gears panicked instead of trying to find a team mate with a bit of space and try and retain possession
Here are our two most senior leaders who have an opportunity to win the game and they hand the footy straight back to the opposition
Anyhow, Stephen Hill won the footy at half back and got it to Walters who found Acres and then the footy went to Scultz who was on his own 30 metres out and he kicked the sealer from dead in front with just a minute to go. Schultz was Gears man
Both Geary and Sebby made some real blunders in the match and some of Seb’s awareness and efforts were pathetic. His disposal was average at best for the few times he got the footy. Geary just needs a rest. Let’s just say h’s got ‘general soreness’ and be done with it
I think both Seb and Gears should be dropped for next week

I think we all know that when we needed solid, calm leadership from our two most experienced players that it wasn't there. The football part of good leadership just isn't part of their remit. It's what grates on those who expect that all that experience and so called 'leadership' quality will come to the fore when it matters most. If Coffield or Clark or Patton kicks that hurried ugly punt Geary - I'm gutted but understand that you have to learn under the heat and quite frankly - they're football babies.
Sadly for us - our two most experienced leaders are junk footballers and ones who you really don't want to have ball in hand when it's there to be won. Hiding Geary as a defensive forward where not great disposal doesn't hurt so much helps but, apart from turning Ross into a completely negative tagger - I'm stuffed if I know what to do with him (other than make way for Bytel)
Put it this way - if you had a gun at Longmuir's head and asked him which St Kilda player he'd like to have ball in hand in that situation - I think Geary would be in the top 1.
Regardless, the usual defenders of poor performance will annihilate me - don't really care though. I've played footy; watched footy and I'm pretty comfortable in my own judgement of what flies and what fails.
Go you red, black & white warriors

Re: Geary
The game could have gone either way in the last few minutes.
Scores are level and the ball is bounced..badly I admit...Marshall still wins the hit out and it ends up with a saints on- baller...don't remember who...but the maggot recalls the ball and bounces it again only this time a shocker wins the clearance with a resultant goal to those creeps who then win the game.
If the bounce hadn't been recalled, we probably would have won as the momentum was with the saints.

Some players who know they’re untouchable, whether that’s because they’re in leadership positions or big name recruits, are some of the ones letting us down most at the moment.

For all the response to 2 first quarter goals v Carlton, the second half was telling as I have contributed earlier
We were beaten at selection because of one dimensional players and from there exposed for numbers on the chess board
Geary is one dimensional

Re: Geary
I've never known where to rate Gears. Is he a hybrid of Stevie Baker & Clint Jones? Hybrids never use to be popular. Damn you Nick Maxwell & 2010!
If Geary was the 22nd best player on the list then we have a Premiership Team. Sadly though, he is seen, rightly or wrongly as being in our Top 10. Gears, we need you to be 19 to 25 on our list.

Re: Geary
Totally agree, Scollop. I only saw the highlights, but in saying that, there was a really obvious piece of play that I could see how easily we lost and that was the bit that you have so well described above. I just remember thinking "who in the living f***k was supposed to be playing on Schultz?". The opposition managed to kick it straight down the throat of a dangerous forward like that and it was obvious what was going to happen.Scollop wrote: ↑Tue 14 Jul 2020 12:41pm I watched the Freo match again today and just tried to freeze some key moments in the match...

I admire Geary as a brave player and an inspiring leader, but it must be so debilitating to the rest of the team watching all their hard work go down the drain (and really take the wind out of their sails), when he turns it over and the opposition score a goal.

Re: Geary
I was more pissd off that Gears panicked and kicked a mungrel punt to a crowded forward line and it was a very shallow entry ( may not even have gone inside 50).
It was too easy for the opposition to defend. There were over 2 minutes on the clock. When Freo got it they looked for a team mate instead of bombing it to a contest
Speaking of 'untouchable'. I heard Lethlean speaking on AFL360 and he was asked if he's on the selection panel and he said 'Yes'
He was asked if Hill and Ross will be dropped and he used the words "credits in the bank" and said something like he was confident they would respond. I'm sure the selection committee feel the same way about Gears
I don't expect any of the senior leaders to be dropped...even though I'd love for it to happen. Make a statement to the members and fans and to the players.
Actions and not just words are required// We have enough back up in the squad and it's time that the younger brigade take charge of this group

Re: Geary
Is that true? Has he always been? Damning if so as he's the one charged with the contractual obligations and justifications for all involved from coaches through to players isn't he?
This should be coaches only, with input from the analysts, with Ratten to right of veto.

I was originally going to bump this thread in light of GWS dropping their captain, but does anyone know if Lethlean is still part of match committee?
