Re: Geary
Geary did us proud tonight and his ferocious attack on the ball ignited the side.
He will never be another Riewoldt, but he inspires the team in his own way with pure guts and determination.

Rubbish. He would actually be one of the first picked.Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Wed 01 Jul 2020 11:52pmWe will have to agree to disagree. In my opinion, with a full list to pick from he would be the 26th ranked player on our list.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Wed 01 Jul 2020 11:40pmPraise the Lord you are not a selector!Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Wed 01 Jul 2020 9:58pm Sorry, I don't mean to offend but I honestly believe that Geary is not in our best 22 anymore. Maybe retire is too harsh but he should only play in the seniors if we are hit by injuries. If he wasn't captain Sinclair would be playing this week.
Usually pays to think before you hit the submit button.
Gears is an automatic selection any clearly in our best 22.

Unfortunately, his lack of skill and habit of causing turnovers, means he is a serious liability.
All the gains we have made with recruiting Hill, Jones, Butler, will be thrown out of the window in each game that Geary plays.
His inclusion is difference between smooth and accurate ball movement, and multiple turnovers and letting the oppo get a run-on.
Should be the odd red face around here this morning.

Re: Geary
I agree with WS to a point - that is, if we play him as a pure deep defender (as we have forever), his field kicking turnovers can be coach killers. However, playing Gears as a defensive forward is by far the most inspired move that Ratten and his crew have made. It negates the best oppo rebounder and provides us with extra forward pressure (Gears has never had a problem his tackling and corralling perfectly). He's going to be the consummate example of a defensive forward - I will go as far as to say if he plays most games well in that role - we'll win most if not all of those games.saynta wrote: ↑Fri 03 Jul 2020 12:03pmWellardSaint wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jul 2020 5:51pmGeary is a fearless warrior that never gives up.Nick_BlueNRG wrote: ↑Wed 01 Jul 2020 7:54pm When will Geary realise that he is not in our best 22? I'm bloody rapt for him and us as a supporter group and I'm more than happy to admit I was wrong (to a point).

Re: Geary
There are many ways a Captain is in the best 22. Gears is a leader of men. When S.L. came in to the rooms last Monday telling the boys we were playing on Thursday it was Gears who got the ball rolling with the excitement and enthusiasm. 10 minutes later you could not wipe the smile and enthusiasm off the group as they looked forward to that game. It was quite unbelievable. They would have played that afternoon, re the leadership Gears showed.
Same as the hub, not a shred of negativity, just a positive approach.
A Captain is many things and I can absolutely assure you the team stands taller when he leads them out. Club is very honoured to have Geary as our Captain.

Re: Geary
He kicked two goals one (which was going through for a certain goal as it was touched) as well as winning his non-preferred position on the night. I'd argue he set the tone for the match and went a long way towards us setting up our lead. Some of his marks inside our forward 50 were critical in us being able to set up scoring opportunities and he stopped the ball being swept out by the opposition all night. Ripper player!
Unfairly maligned for mine.

Re: Geary
What a masterstroke of coaching by Ratts and co for having the foresight to use Gears like this. He was made for this role. The rebound defender has become one of the most valuable players in todays game and now we have a weapon to counter act it. And will give them something to think about too as hes an excellent contested mark and (ironically) a very reliable kick for goal. His goal kicking action is so straight and clean. Didn't look like missing. Even the one that fell just short.

Great post. Thank you for sharing that we have a worthy leader and a positive role model for our young developing playerstony74 wrote: ↑Fri 03 Jul 2020 4:23pm There are many ways a Captain is in the best 22. This year has taught us all a lot and we need to always be thankful rather than looking for things to complain about
...sorry to bring this up, but I think it’s important to remember
Gears would not have been phased at all about travelling an extra 20 minutes....
In his own luxurious private motor vehicle to get to his workplace at Seaford
Sainter K would be so proud

Re: Geary
I wanted Gears to take on the role but I never thought he'd be a forward target and I wouldn't have thought he'd be kicking multiple goals

Re: Geary
I think the move was clever. I hope it is sustainable.
Geary has played 7 of the last 27 games and got injured in 3 of them. In that time his leadership has become legendary. Before that he was hands down the best leader we had. Before that we had Roo.
Paton 21, Coffield 22, Wilkie 27, Clark 34 and Long 35 games, now form.the nucleus of a defense which has developed, largely, in Geary's absence from.the field. Two of them are top 10 draft picks and the other 3 are from state leagues. No Roberton, Brown, Webster or Savage.
Add Howard this year and Carlisle as the experienced campaigner and last night we got a glimpse of what a difference skill and class makes.
Courage, commitment and positive projection are fantastic qualities and I'm willing to accept that Geary deserves a spot in the 22 but I hope it doesn't mean one of those kids gets dropped.
Eddy got one goal. Docherty got 20 possessions and 8 marks and sparked a second half comeback.
Under a lot of pressure and with a depleted and tired midfield, that young backline stood up. I'm not sure where I'm going with this but I'd just feel uncomfortable if we didn't persist with the backline as it is or continue to let Ratten develop new leaders.

Great game by our Captain. The disrespect shown on this site is quite sad and usually displayed by posters who have no idea about football, but are bored and have nothing else to do.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.
