Dan Hannebery - call it

Post: # 1850560Post skeptic »

Sorry for the negative post but I’m fired up about this...

We are one elite mid away from being a serious premiership threat and Hannebery is not that player.

He’s been so so since he started playing again and alas he’s got another soft tissue injury tonight.

He’s on big coin to be a match winner for us and he’s a slightly better version of Dunstan with considerably less durability.

I don’t want to sink another 2-3 years into guy for 15-16 possessions games for twelve times a year.

Move him on... we’re better off without him IMO

Still got to pay him for next 2.5years though don't we?

I guess so but we’re stuck paying that anyway... why take the development away from someone else too.

He is the only negative going forward and it's a big one because of the ridiculous contract Lethlean gave him.

Hopefully between him and Freeman our recruiters have learn't their lesson regarding broken down players who better resourced clubs can't get onto the ground.Any chance his contract has performance clauses?

Probably doesn't want to go to a Sydney hub.

It was an interesting interview after the game... first he said that it was just tightness and they were being cautious as it got sorer... then he said something to the effect of I hope I don’t miss too many games. Made me think he gave away more than intended.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the club clear him to play but he ends up being a late withdrawal for 2-3 weeks

We paid big overs salary wise because no one wanted to come to our club at the time.

And why would you with Mr Biege as coach ?

Short memories guys - the trade hall we got last year was a distant pipe dream 3 years ago.

$4M for a passed-his-peak injury prone 28 year old.

Was a disaster from the start. No offence to DH, he’s just trying to get paid.

Finally Reality . People get injured he’s still worth being there.

No one wanted to come to us. Might start to be a bit different now

Our midfield clearance work is so much better when he’s there. That effort when he ran back with the flight was huge and a great example for a young group.

Very true, all of it. He obviously adds a fair bit around the club but his influence on the field is a shadow of his former self. Sydney are not stupid, they needed salary cap relief, we needed a signature. Hannebery was the Chief beneficiary, daylight 2nd, photo for 3rd.

One upside I have heard was his salary was front ended meaning he won’t cost us as much next 2 years can anyone clarify that?

And fair enough...
And getting those players may be worth his price tag. But we need more than this if we are to continue pumping games into him

He’s not there to be the 20th best player on the list.

At the moment, he doesn’t look to me like a player that’s part of that next big step

I must be missing something.

He's an excellent footballer.

Under normal circumstances, he's not a million dollar player (so to speak), but the rebuild of the club was not a normal circumstance.

It took that sort of move to start to get the place moving in the right direction.

Absolutely, 110% a great move to recruit him.

Apparently, at the time we had accrued around $1.5m that with a large portion of that due to expire if not used. I'm not certain of this but it was mentioned here and in the media.
I'd imagine a fair bit of that was front ended to Hanners.
I've also been told by a club insider that his base contract was 70% of $3.2m for 4 years with a performance based trigger for the 5th year.
If this is the case, he certainly didn't meet his performance levels last year so $540k wasted but $260k saved. If he was paid 2 years base rate upfront ($1.08m) then we will owe him $1.08m for the next 2. All speculation on rumour but not totally unbelievable.
Butler, Ryder, Jones, Howard and King all came cheap, so you win some and you lose some.
As for him stifling development, perhaps Bytel or Byrnes are well placed to get some if he goes down. Risk vs reward we just about square up.
All told, I'm pretty happy with the planning, recruitment and prospects from our current position, compared to 16 months ago.

He may only miss one week - when he's there he's worth it, when he's not, we can give a younger player a shot at the title. He was very good out there tonight. He isn't keeping a younger player out, because he won't play next week and somebody else gets a go.

Hannerbrey was just starting to run into a strong vein of form and is an important player in our team. He is not the player he was, but adds plenty to the Saints and I hope he doesnt miss too many games.

I must be watching the wrong games!
There were 14 players nominated for votes on here last week and he wasn't one of them.

Agree. Too bad he’s copped a soft tissue injury. And I like what Lethlean is bringing to the club

Fingers crossed!
We had the cap space which needed to be spent, and it wasn't going towards our guys when they didn't deserve it. He was a quality player and no one wanted to come. I don't have a problem with it. I'd say the only downside would be if his contract isn't front ended.

Exactly, getting him, albeit overs, got the ball rolling.... not his sydney peak but still a good contributor.
