Historical Context of Tonight's Win.

Tonight means a lot to me.

Before 1995 we had beaten Carlton 4 times out of the previous 30 contests, and only won a pathetic 7 contests out of more than 100 at Princes Park their home ground. We had won 16% of our matches against the glamorous Blues from Carlton.

By the beginning of 2002 we had still only won 35 out of our 193 matches against Carlton. They led us in the head-to-heads between the two clubs at 35-156!

Since then we have won an amazing 22 out of 29 matches, bringing our % of wins to 27%. This achievement has been officially recognised as one of the most stunning form reversals in the entire history of professional competitive sport. This century we have won 76% of our matches against our more glamorous rivals.

We've now won 57 matches against the Blues. For many years we were absolutely locked down on only 27 wins against them.

30 wins against an opponent may not sound like a lot, but when we consider that we only play them once a year usually, it displays our absolute dominance over this mob.

Our top 14 highest ever scores and top 8 winning margins have only come since 1990 - very recently in our 137 year club history! Growing up our biggest victory against the Blues was only 53 points which was back in 1966 and our highest score was a lowly 114 points - which was inexplicably a losing score (which the Blues had beaten 37 times!!!!)

For you younger Sainters - who are under 35 - let me tell ya, wins against this mob were very, very hard fought!!!!

Carlton have never come to terms with the equalisation that the transition from VFL to AFL brought with it.

They cheated and swindled their way to many of their flags. Be it by player payments or player transfers.

Still struggling to grow out of their sense of entitlement.

I probably despise Carlton more than any other club. When I started watching football it is more than likely I didnt see us beat them for over a decade.

If they win a flag before we do I will probably stop watching footy.
